Stosur Beats Kerber In U.S. Open 2011 Semifinals

Stosur

RACHEL COHEN   09/11/11 12:48 AM ET   AP

NEW YORK — Sam Stosur told her parents she wasn't leaving for school until Patrick Rafter won the U.S. Open.

Growing up in Australia, Stosur was glued to the TV when her countryman captured titles in 1997 and '98. Now she wonders if kids back home will do the same when she plays Serena Williams for the Open championship Sunday.

The 27-year-old Stosur reached her second major final Saturday, her experience showing in a three-set victory over 92nd-ranked Angelique Kerber.

The ninth-seeded Aussie won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in a semifinal that would have seemed overshadowed by the Williams-Caroline Wozniacki tilt even if it weren't relegated to the Grandstand.

The 2010 French Open runner-up, Stosur had two record-setting three-set wins earlier in the tournament, so this 1-hour, 46-minute match seemed like a breeze in comparison. She went up 5-0 in the final set, then was broken when she first tried to serve out the match.

The second time, Stosur had to save four break points before finally clinching victory with an emphatic backhand volley.

Stosur lost a tight 6-4, 7-6 (2) final to Francesca Schiavone at Roland Garros last year, wasting a break point in the second set.

"It had never happened up until that point, so you never know if it is going to happen again," she said. "Multiple people came up to me and said, 'You're gonna get another chance. You can come back and make it again.' Of course you want to believe that, but until it happens, you never know if that's the case."

Kerber had never been past the third round of a Grand Slam before this tournament. The German still hasn't beaten a top-10 opponent – she hadn't faced any player ranked better than No. 13 in her run at the Open.

Stosur needed 3 hours, 16 minutes to win in the third round against Nadia Petrova 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-5 – the longest women's match at the Open since the advent of the tiebreaker in 1970. Two days later, Stosur was part of the longest tiebreaker in a women's Grand Slam, beating Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-7 (15), 6-3.

This semifinal wasn't on the center court of Arthur Ashe Stadium because rain delays meant there were four singles matches Saturday instead of the normal three. It had to be played in Flushing Meadows' third-largest venue because of water on the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Stosur and Kerber pleaded with tournament officials that their match belonged on Ashe, to no avail.

"I think it was not fair for us that the semifinal of the Grand Slam is on the Grandstand," Kerber said.

She still felt a bit overwhelmed in the setting – under the lights and in front of a packed house as fans with tickets to the night session waited for the men's matches to end so they could get into Ashe.

If serene has the positive attitude that her sister has and give up her daddy's attitude she could have won. why raise heck in public when you will never win, Shut up play the game!...............

For anyone watching these matches, it becomes obvious that the CBS Sports announcers (really just opionion givers and cheerleaders for the American players) are a distraction to the games being played. Once again poor sportsmanship from the dominate American female player will overshadow an outright win by her opponent. Enough already, looking the other way by the networks and tennis associations only encourages these habitual bad sportmanship acts to continue. But, if you want the spoiled player to show up or give an interview, you have to kiss their rings.

One of the announcers said to McEnroe that she thought he used outbursts as a way to get the crowd behind him. He replied "I challenge that"

Naturally Huffpost is a day behind. Hello Huffpost, Sam Stosur just destroyed Serena in straight set 6-2 6-3. And of course Serena continued to prove how obnxious she is, first by waving her racket at the chair umpire after the ump made a correct ruling then chirping at her all through the between sets break, and secondly by not shaking the ump's hand after the match. In any case, Stosur was flawless today. She can hit with Serena and isn't intimidated by anyone.

she may not be the 'real' number one, but do you really think Serena has anything else to prove?

As if being #1 will make her day. she held that title many times. she was obviously sluggish having played last night, and i'm sure she would have loved to win against stosur. but she did what she could.

btw, who's calling for serena to be #1?

Nor #9. Please, as if you haven't seen some of the posts whining about her ranking.

Go Samantha. This American finds Serena Williams antics and bs a disgrace to the game which is going on live at the US Open Ladies Final.

She is an embarrassment to the game.

With that...

I've played tennis competitively for 20 years. I know who the hell Samantha Stosur is and Serena is a joke. I cannot stomach that loud mouth brat.

Venus is all class.

Serena is an absolute brat. Who patented ``come on!'' just cost her big time.

she has no class. I am glad she lost

I'll tell you what and when I want to do it. Yes dear. I think Id have a hard time dating a woman who could bench more than me,and whose arms were twice as big. Just me, some guys get off on that stuff.

Huffington Post

Why is there no story about Serena Williams, the only American in the finals who beat the supposedy #1seed? The match was over 15 hours ago so there are no excuses. Disgusting.

I agree. I bet if Melanie Oudin made the final...or Sharapova for that matter it would definitely be on the front page of the entire website, let alone the sports page.

This is quite deliberate.

She has no class. Watch how she treats the umpires.

The number one ranking among women has triggered a new debate. Tennis rankings, however, have nothing to do with the quality of players. It is about money because tournaments must at least break even and preferably make profits. The rankings have tow objectives. 1. To encourage good players to participate in as many tournaments as possible which Wozniacki does. 2. To lure spectators to watch top-ten players live or on TV. If Serena continues to play only in majors she may get into the top ten but will never reach number one.

In other words--- tennis ranking is meaningless. LOL
04:08 PM on 09/11/2011
No the rankings are for the players who play the most and win. They are accurate as a system of ranking can be with empirical data. Serena is a one off, dominate campion that does her own thing and has been battling injuries and health issues for the past yr or so. Fewer matches, fewer wins, fewer points - so not number one. This is a meritocracy not an arbitrary assignment of ranking based on someones opinion. Look at the finals of all the mens slams - ie the open has 1,2,3,4 in the semi's and 1&2 in the finals. The rankings work.

There were two semis and in the other one an American came back
From injury and is making another incredible run for yet another title! By the way, when Wozniacki threw her racket on the ground-surprise- no warning! Once again, the blonde gets away with behavior certain other players would be penalized for.
