U.S. Obtains Data From 10 Swiss Banks In Tax-Dodging Probe

Credit Suisse

ZURICH - U.S. authorities now have statistical data from the ten Swiss banks being investigated by the United States for helping U.S. clients to dodge taxes, Swiss newspaper Neue Zuercher Zeitung reported on Saturday.

TagesAnzeiger, another Swiss newspaper, reported that the Swiss banks now had until Sept 23 to hand over more specific client data.

Credit Suisse , which is one of the banks under investigation, had already handed over data earlier in the week, while the nine other banks had handed over the data through an intermediary on Friday, NZZ said without citing any sources.

The newspaper also said the Swiss government had given them "plenty of rope" to do this.

Mario Tuor, spokesman for the Swiss department for international financial affairs, declined to comment on the NZZ and TagesAnzeiger reports, but he said: "We are still going for a solution on the basis of existing legal rules in Switzerland."

Late on Friday, Reuters reported that the United States was drafting legal documents, seeking to force nearly a dozen Swiss banks and international banks with Swiss branches to disclose the identities of American clients that evaded taxes.

Also on Friday, Swiss newspaper Blick said that Switzerland had given the United States an estimate of the number of its citizens who used secret accounts to avoid paying taxes between 2002 and 2010.

Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy Rey said on Wednesday that Switzerland had given the U.S. statistical data about the extent of U.S. taxpayers, but had not handed over any bank client data.

Handing over statistical data is possible within the current Swiss law that protects banking secrecy.

Switzerland, a noted tax haven that is the global capital of offshore private banking, has been under attack from U.S. Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service officials conducting a broad criminal investigation into private banking services that U.S. authorities say enabled wealthy Americans to evade billions of dollars in taxes.

The Justice Department served a target letter in July on Credit Suisse, Switzerland's second-largest bank, notifying it that it was the focus of a criminal investigation. American authorities also are probing HSBC and smaller Swiss private banks and cantonal banks, including Basler Kantonalbank, Wegelin and Julius Baer .

The Justice Department is trying to determine the total volume of unreported accounts held at Swiss banks. Officials suspect the accounts hold assets in the tens of billions of dollars and possibly more.

The grand scheme of all to bilk americans that were lied to stolen from and cheated. To lock the U.S. citizens out of their accounts where the justice is in this is beyond insurrection.
I just wonder what type of currency is held in limbo and if there is any chance of it being returned for instance the Fulltilt Black Friday scandal. This subject seems to be hush hush or did it just get swept under the rug. Looks can be deceiving but if it smells of fish and your bait is gone something is very fishy or is it just phishing without a license.

It's nice they're doing something, but by the time I read the title I knew it wasn't enough and probably pointless. Why just 10 banks? Why just Swiss accounts? We know there are havens all around the world.

We need to stop the small scale action and go big. ExxonMobil had $45.2 billion dollars in profits and paid $15 billion dollars in income taxes, the most of any corporation, but none to the U.S. in 2009. They did this by using subsidiaries they own completely in the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Not Switzerland.

This just smells like more corruption. Hand picking targets to avoid catching the wrong guy.

They go wherever they get leverage. They managed to go after UBS because of the whistle-blower Birkenfeld. Now Credit Suisse has been caught helping ex-UBS cstomers.
For the other local banks in Switzerland operating just within the borders or the Caribbeans there is just no leverage. I mean the DOJ could blacklist smaller banks and prevent US based banks to trade with them.

This reminds me of How the US government shut down Poker stars for tax evasion.

Problem is, the people breaking the law this time, make campaign contributions and will never feel any effect. I will believe it when i see it.

For now, this is a smoke screen hiding something else.

I was looking in here to see if anyone posted the republican talking point that 47% of the american people don't pay taxes. I love rebutting that remark.

Great link. Once again, we fact check the bile that spews forth from republicans mouths and it doesn't hold up. Not even close.

People who lie openly, in speeches, debates or on the news, should be held accountable and serve some jail time. Free speech is one thing, but this kind of thing is deliberate, contagious and venomous speech.

Sure but the US is a tax haven for non-resident aliens. Non-resident aliens pay no Federal taxes when they invest in the US.
I guess it is suddenly okay then when we do that to other nations.

I don't think it's ok for anybody. Nigeria should be flush. But they're broke. Why? They have the resources, they have the oil....
Because other countries help the greedy remove the $$ from the political and democratic process, to serve their own ends. I find it deplorable. You should check out the rules for corporations in Delaware. It blows my mind.

Thanks. It clearly shows that the US is a tax haven for non Americans. Suddenly, it is okay then, part of a sound economical policy etc... But when somebody else does it to the US it is a scandal.

I've wondered for some time now why the business class has such a visceral h8tred of working Americans. Can anybody paint me a psychological portrait of these people? Many of these business people don't seem too far removed from the unwashed masses themselves. I can understand them wanting to do well for themselves, we all do, but it seems to me they go out of there way to kick sand in our faces and resist everything that offers the pettiest benefit for ordinary people. They couldn't even tolerate some obscure labor mural in a Maine employment center.

It amazes me that the people who caused the financial meltdown and the great recession have now become the victims and that we must protect them from paying for the damage they caused. If this kind of reverse logic is so easy to sell how do you expect to make a case on money laundering in tax havens.

The facilitators of wealth transfer will continue to broadcast their propaganda of of misdirection and repeated lies to deflect the blame. They own a media and political machine and will use it to block and ultimately delay till all evidence becomes to muddy to use.The largest criminals will avoid any responsibility and the prosecution of the smallest will then prove that it is all a tempest in a teapot. This has been the operating phylosophy for years and I predict this will continue.
