Darth Vader's 'No!' From 'Star Wars' Blu-Ray In Other Movies (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/12/11 10:12 AM ET Updated: 11/12/11 05:12 AM ET

George Lucas is releasing all six "Star Wars" movies on Blu-Ray this month, and at this point we all know it can only mean one thing: More changes to films that most people evidently believed were perfectly good to begin with.

The change that has gotten the most attention comes at the end of "Return of the Jedi," at the film's climax when Darth Vader throws Emperor Palpatine into a reactor pit to save his son Luke. The change has been roundly criticized for turning Vader's silent act of betrayal into a corny, melodramatic B-movie trope by adding a voiceover of Vader exclaiming, "Nooooooo!"

But at least two good things came out of the change. First, James Earl Jones got paid. (Between the "Lion King" re-release this month and the "Star Wars" Blu-Ray, that guy is the patron saint of September '11 royalties.) But also, Cineweekly put together this great supercut of Vader's "Nooooooo!" inserted into other movies. It isn't until you see it in "Casablanca" or "The Godfather" that it's clear how silly the voiceover truly sounds.

A travesty what Lucas has done.
This did make me laugh though.

I seem to recall there was once an eccentric man who liked to make movies. He was brilliant and inventive. Mostly he liked to tinker with his movies and try to get the perfect shot with perfect clouds and the perfect girl with the perfect figure. Some movies took him years to make.

Is Mr. Lucas also in the process of building a huge plane for the military? Is he on the verge of living in isolation?

Mr. Lucas, your tinkering a la Howard Hughes equates to colorizing the black and white versions of The Wizard of Oz: pointless and self-indulgent.

Please, sir, hire someone who will not allow your tinkering to get beyond your own private viewing studio.

ps I have seen the CGI Yoda replaced in Empire and I am disappointed. I think "modern" audiences could have lived with a muppet (as if 30 years ago was the golden age of movie making and modern audiences can't suspend disbelief over a muppet. Will Mr. Lucas be advocating CGI use on Sesame Street? If Mr. Lucas didn't want a muppet, then he shouldn't have a mentor character that has Grover's voice. My fave muppet, but not the sharpest tool in the shed.)
