Glenn Beck Network, 'GBTV,' Launches

Glenn Beck

The Huffington Post   Katherine Fung First Posted: 09/12/11 12:50 PM ET Updated: 11/12/11 05:12 AM ET

Glenn Beck returns to screens on Monday with the debut of his Internet-based network GBTV and a new two-hour show.

The former Fox News host made his plans for GBTV public in May after announcing his departure from Fox News in April.

For observers, the debut of Beck's network will answer two pressing questions: will his television viewers follow him to the Internet, and will they pay for access? GBTV is available online and on Roku streaming players, by subscription only.

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources at Beck's Mercury Radio Arts, reported that GBTV has netted 230,000 subscribers. That's a much lower audience than Beck drew at Fox News (or still draws on his radio show) but the crucial difference is that all of those people are paying for the access to the content. At $10 a subscription (or $5 for access to Beck's new show), that's a lot of money.

The launch of GBTV has also posed questions about what a network created by Glenn Beck will look like. Beck, who was a divisive figure at Fox News, told the Journal that he would have "complete creative control since I own the show and the network." The network's other programming will include a reality show about creating the network, a show anchored by Beck's radio co-hosts, and a block of children's programming.

Anticipation for Beck's new show has been building, with the release of pictures of his new set and a Times Square billboard. The show will be launched from New York City, even though Beck plans to eventually build a studio and host the show from Dallas.

Beck's show premieres on Monday at 5 p.m. He is slated to discuss activism in the wake of 9/11, and the state of the economy.

Glenn Beck is a true patriot. I have already signed up for his show. Only an educated population will get us back on the right track, and Glenn Beck is a big part of that.

I wonder how many of those 230,000 will renew their subscription....

Remember, a fool & his money are soon parted

Who is this "Glenn Beck" person to whom the article refers? Did he used to be somebody? He's rather odd-looking.

It will be interesting to see how this business model works. Will his unique nature fit this concept or will it be problematic. What level of subscription constitutes success, in terms of Glenn's goals and in terms of internet business.

They sure don't miss him in NYC. I think it was great that Beck was run out of NYC. He belongs in Texas.

Glenn Beck a "technophobe?"

Why squander your credibility on such an unimportant, demonstrably incorrect observation?

And just because I disagree with you, that must mean you're an "idiot" too, right?

And since you've obviously done your own fact-checking regarding the issues Beck has addressed using those blackboards and 3x5 cards, please share with us how he was so wrong about
- the price of gold,
- the Fed breakng its promise to never monetize our debt (further devaluating our money)
- the influence of known Marxists and radicals in shaping Obama's political beliefs,
- the involvement of U.S.-based Marxists and "community organizers" in the "Arab Spring" uprisings,
- the Egyptian "freedom movement" eventually being hijacked by Islamic fundamentalists,
- the influence of Saul Alinsky, Frances Fox Piven, and other leftist radicals in shaping Barack Obama's politics,
- and the numerous ties of many in the Obama administration to these same far-left radicals.

Beck provided audio and video sources to support his claims. Feel free to post links to your sources to support yours.

Go ahead. We'll wait.

gee it's nice to know that you are worried about my credibility, but find Beck credible. My momma told me not to argue with idiots, period!

Ever since I read a comment elsewhere here on HP, I can't think of his network as anything but "LGBTV"!

I adore him. Last Christmas I sent him a cheeseburger.

Actually, old Mike hasn't produced a hit for a while. "Capitalism" cost $20 million but grossed $17 million. Maybe his new book will do better.

Just wondering, but now that Beck's "tv network" is accessible only via the web... it is true that there can no longer be any independent verification of "viewers?" No Nielsen, no Arbitron?
