MANTUA - For 6,000 years, two young lovers have been locked in an eternal embrace, hidden from the eyes of the world. This past weekend, the “Lovers of Valdaro” -- named for the little village near Mantua, in Northern Italy, where they were first discovered -- were seen by the public for the first time.

The lovers are in fact two human skeletons, dating back to the Neolithic era, which were found in a necropolis in the nearby village of Valdaro in 2007, huddled close together, face to face, their arms and legs entwined. They were displayed this past weekend at the entrance of Mantua Archeological Museum, thanks to the effort of the association, “Lovers of Mantua,” which is seeking a permanent home for the ancient couple.

After the discovery, many thought that the couple had been killed. It would fit in well with the history of an Italian region famous for many tragic love stories. Mantua is the city where Romeo was exiled and was told that his Juliet was dead. The composer Giuseppe Verdi chose it as the location for his opera Rigoletto, another story of star-crossed love and death.

But subsequent research revealed that the skeletons did not have any signs of a violent death. They were a woman and a man, between 18 and 20 years old. Some have wondered if they died together, holding each other in a freezing night. Professor Silvia Bagnoli, the president of the association “Lovers in Mantua,” doesn’t exclude this possibility, but says that more likely the skeletons were laid out in that position after their deaths.

The mystery might never be solved. Still, many want to see the couple. The association “Lovers in Mantua” is campaigning for their right to have a room of their own. According to Bagnoli, 250,000 euros will be enough for an exhibition center, and another 200,000 euros could pay for a multimedia space to tell the world the mysterious story of these prehistoric lovers.

I think it's just that they were squashed out a bit by the weight of the earth or rock, and have been displayed as they were uncovered, not as they would be if reconstructed. You can see where they are cracked and still full of earth.

I think it would be wonderful if they did a facial reconstruction on these two.

How do they know the two were lovers? Maybe she got caught trying to pick his pocket and they both got killed in the chase to get it back.

I remember reading a story about how many "coupled" skeletons were found in a certain part of the world (wanna say Mexico). They were found to indeed be male and female pairings and, judging from the ages and approximate dates of death, that these were soldiers whose wives had accompanied them into battle. Now, that's devotion!

True story. Remember reading about this kind of finding at Pompei, after Mt. Vesuvius erupted.

No, wait! It's gotta be Adam and Eve! They must have fallen off of the dinosaur that they were riding with Fred and Wilma.

This reminds me of my 2 cats Pink Nose and Silky who, even though they were both fixed, were a loving married couple for almost 10 years. The wifie sometimes loved to sit on top of the huzbun and he let her do it -- usually! Then he died and the widow girl lived another 4 years, now they are in the same pet cemetery close to each other although now she doesn't get to sit on top of him! That was a purrfect, purr-pet-ual romance. How I miss those lovers! I don't care if anyone sneers at romance, that is the way it should be...

Once animals are "fixed" and they are pinning another down and "humping" them it is a dominatation thing. Much like "making love" after human beings are married lol ;)

One of the lovers had an overbite lol. I wonder what really killed them at such a young age. Hope it wasn't tragic. Also is it possible to test for DNA after all these years to see if they were related..... might just be brother and sister who were poisoned or something, who knows. We only see what we want it to be. However, sometimes, the truth is better off left untold and i should just stop analyzing. I'm letting my girly side takeover and say it’s a bittersweet ending, they were two people who cared deeply about one another regardless of their relationship--- Laying together side by side in each other's embrace for centuries, until the end of time.

Maybe it was a disease, possibly an epidemic that struck them down in a brief period of time. Maybe after they both were infected, one joined the other in the death bed. Then maybe the village elders decided that since that were conjoined by rigor mortis and it would be difficult to separate them, they were laid to rest in that final embrace. So young to leave this world, it truly is a pity. But they shared a lasting love. I hope to go out the same way, being clung to for dear life by a lady tax collector.
