Serena Williams Fined $2,000 By U.S. Open For Berating Chair Umpire

Serena Williams Fined

09/12/11 04:30 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- Serena Williams was fined $2,000 by the U.S. Open on Monday for berating the chair umpire during the final.

Tournament referee Brian Earley issued his ruling a day after Williams was cited by chair umpire Eva Asderaki for a code violation for verbal abuse during a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Sam Stosur in the women's singles championship match at Flushing Meadows.

A statement issued by the U.S. Tennis Association said the fine "is consistent with similar offenses at Grand Slam events."

Williams earned $1.4 million at the U.S. Open: $900,000 for finishing as the runner-up, plus a $500,000 bonus for having come in first place in the U.S. Open Series standings, which take into account results at hard-court tuneup tournaments.

The USTA also said Grand Slam committee director Bill Babcock conducted his own review and determined "Williams' conduct, while verbally abusive, does not rise to the level of a major offense under the Grand Slam Code of Conduct."

That means Williams does not face further disciplinary action – which could have included a fine and suspension from a Grand Slam tournament – under the "probationary period" she was put under after yelling at and threatening a line judge after a foot-fault call at the end of her loss to Kim Clijsters in the 2009 U.S. Open semifinals.

On Sunday night against Stosur, Williams faced a break point while serving in the first game of the second set.

Williams ripped a forehand that she celebrated with her familiar yell of "Come on!" But Asderaki ruled that the scream came while Stosur was reaching for a backhand, so the point wasn't finished. Based on the hindrance rule, Asderaki awarded the point to Stosur, putting the Australian ahead 1-0 in that set.

That set Williams off on a series of insults directed at the official, a scene far less ugly than – yet reminiscent of – her tirade on the same court two years ago.

A sampling of what Williams said, prompting Asderaki to call the code violation:

_"You're out of control."

_"You're a hater, and you're just unattractive inside."

_"Really, don't even look at me."

Asked at her news conference Sunday night whether she regretted any of her words, the 13-time Grand Slam champion rolled her eyes and replied: "I don't even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. ... I guess I'll see it on YouTube."

In 2009, Williams' profanity-laced outburst at a line judge led to an immediate $10,000 fine from the U.S. Open and later a record $82,500 fine from Babcock. At the time, Babcock said that if Williams committed a "major offense" at a Grand Slam tournament in 2010 or 2011, her fine could be doubled and she would be barred from the following U.S. Open.

This fines says that sportsmanship is no longer a significant part of professional tennis. That makes me decide not to watch it anymore. I will ask anyone who talks about professional tennis why they support it minus the traditional element of courtesy.

Sit back in your comfortable chair with your beer and continue to be a hater. Serena and her sister are multimillionaires and could care less what you say.

Way to go Sam!! Congratulations!!!

Serena is a mess! Please stop trying to play tennis. Serena is a disgrace to the US, the sport,
the other players, the fans, and herself. She shows no professionalism or respect for others.
She will say one thing and try to come across so nice and innocent and then turn right around
in front of millions of people and do just the opposite. I think she really needs some professional
help.

Serena, go girl...playing tennis is your living...people on the sidelines have no idea in reality what it takes to play at your level. That skinny little something in that chair has no clue. Skinny has a mistaken understanding of her power. Two years in a row, the powers found someway to derail her train, Last year's call turned out to be wrong. Look behind the foreground and you will understand that this was just another hater!

What a ridiculous take on what happened...If anything, the chair judge allowed TOO MUCH latitude to this spoiled, combative, egotistical player. Her actions were a hinderance to her opponents ability to play the game. This is not soccer, this is not basketball, this is a game of decorum and respect for ones opponent and Serena observed none of this. Furthermore, if a chair judge can't enforce the rules of tennis then what is he or she doing there? She doesn't have a mistaken understanding of her power...Serena has a mistaken understanding of sense of self.

Nicely put! It seems the common code of conduct has been hindered due to a player who has no common sense.

Serena's behavior was not merely that of an arrogant spoiled bully, but seriously bizarre. "I despise you" is not a standard temperamental rant, but a weird regression into a childish cocoon of some private world. Her explanation and "apology" was a disgrace. On the positive side, however, was the noticeable and welcome fact of her not screaming during every shot during the match--a most unsportsmanlike and ugly deportment which will not be missed when she, her sis, and Sharapova all exit the stage.

I can't stand watching her play.
She's embarrassing.

Totally agree....couldn't have said it better myself. As an American, I was also embarrassed.

Serena yell out during a play is no different that yelling out when a golfer is about to putt. I believe it was excitement that made her yell out, but she still was out of line.

The difference is that in golf the hole doesn't have a chance to react to the putt.

I didn't know steroids were so prevalent in tennis.

They should have fined her even more. She was insulting the woman...saying you're nothing, you are ugly inside etc. She did the same thing last time with the asian lines woman. She said mean things to her, said that she would make her eat the tennis ball. She is just out of control.
Her tennis is superb, no question. But her attitude sucks! There is no race involve her for some people try to make it that its not. Its just one spoiled brat wanting to always get her way nothing more. She is a bully and uses anything to get what she wants. And the thing is just her performance and talent as an athlete would be enough to command respect but her attitude drags her back down.

I see a lot of comments criticizing the chair and others criticizing Serena. Let's be honest…those who actually watched the match.

It was not a professional thing for Serena to talk to a chair judge like that regardless of how nonchalant the judge may have been. It is a match rule to give the opposing player the point so the ruling was not just based on the ideology of the chair judge. It has happened to others and had nothing to do with the pigmentation of skin.

This is not the first incident of impropriety (yet I hope it will be the last) that was done during one of her matches. I like Serena but she reminds me of a child having a hissy fit on the grocery store floor because she can't get her cookies when she behaves like this.

I don’t know why people wish to make this more than what it was. She is a great tennis player who had another bad day.

get on with it already, for YEARS there has been some sort of 'problem' with the Williams sisters. it old, its tired and those that dislike them really show their ways. its saddens me to see the comments about her, her talent, her ability to express herself, her looks. i commend her for being a strong women in this climate. one has to be. the bottom line here is a direct view into the race relations in this country. i feel we have stepped back many steps from our progression on this issue. we are living in tumultuous times and all we can think about is this type of nonsense. there is more going on in the world folks that will take all of us to help overcome. i know there are those of you who will read this, look at my photo and dig in. you know who you are..........so here is a premature 'sod off'.

You're exactly right.
Serena should be able to behave as poorly as she wants. The fans payed big bucks to see a professional match, and if they are offended by her ugly behavior, they are just racist.
Blacks should never be expected of follow the same etiquette as others, they are special.

SOOO above and beyond what actually occurred. Race had not one thing to do with this. Rules are rules. It would be easier for you to walk if you took that car-sized chip off your shoulder.

didn't roddick or someone have a 'confrontation' with on official about something wet on the court floor? and what ? no fine? nothing......this is ridiculous already.
01:05 PM on 09/13/2011
there's a difference between a "confrontation" and "verbal abuse." -"You're a hater, and you're just unattractive inside." "Really, don't even look at me." These words have nothing to do with tennis. this is just stomping around like a toddler who didn't get their way.

That Roddick exchange happened before he played. So, the match rules do not apply. Also, he had a genuine concern about water seeping through the cracks in the concrete, which is a hazard to players. Rafa, Nole and Murray were vocal about this as well.

i'm speaking of the behavior specifically and only referencing its currency. whether it was before or after, or the official was legitimate or not the behavior was exhibited. the implicit rules are not the same.

I think Serena and Venus have shown great character in the past, in spite of the displayed racism. However, Serena was clearly wrong for yelling out DURING the play, prior to her opponent responding to her serve. Personally, I think it's time they retire--with grace and dignity, before Serena blows it all. THEY ARE tennis! Let the USTA have their game. That will be their biggest punishment!
01:02 PM on 09/13/2011
THEY are not tennis. Tennis has been around far before them, and will continue long after them.
02:21 PM on 09/13/2011
Of course, the GAME will continue.........But will the draw? I THINK NOT! Not even for men--Djokovic is too nasty, no one will watch. Perhaps, when the upcoming Americans improve their game, some will tune in again. HOWEVER, THE WILLIAMS ARE BIG BUCKS!
