Bacteria Spreading In Warming Oceans, Scientists Find In New Report

DON MELVIN   09/13/11 03:37 PM ET   AP

BRUSSELS — Warning: The warming of the world's oceans can cause serious illness and may cost millions of euros (dollars) in health care.

That is the alarm sounded in a paper released online Tuesday on the eve of a two-day conference in Brussels.

The 200-page paper is a synthesis of the findings of more than 100 projects funded by the European Union since 1998. It was produced by Project CLAMER, a collaboration of 17 European marine institutes.

The paper says the rising temperature of ocean water is causing a proliferation of the Vibrio genus of bacteria, which can cause food poisoning, serious gastroenteritis, septicemia and cholera.

"Millions of euros in health costs may result from human consumption of contaminated seafood, ingestion of waterborne pathogens, and, to a lesser degree, though direct occupational or recreational exposure to marine disease," says the paper. "Climatic conditions are playing an increasingly important role in the transmission of these diseases."

The paper also describes a host of other effects of ocean warming, both documented and forecast, including melting ice, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, increased storm intensity and frequency, along with chemical changes in the sea itself, including acidification and deoxygenation.

"What was striking to me was the enormous pile of evidence that things are already happening," Katja Philippart, a marine scientist at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research who was involved in putting the study together, told The Associated Press. "There is so much happening already. We are just in the midst of it."

It is not only the range of changes that has scientists concerned, but the speed of them.

"The biggest surprise to me is the fact that things are changing in the ocean much more rapidly than we thought was possible," said Carlo Heip, who is director of the same institute in the Netherlands.

In just a few decades, he said, the fish population of the North Sea has changed significantly, with larger species moving toward the arctic and smaller ones taking their place.

He said the concentration of Vibrio genus of bacteria has been observed since the 1960s. "When the temperature in the North Sea began to increase at the end of the 80s, the Vibrios began to increase. One of those Vibrios is the cholera species."

In the Baltic region in 2006, far more people got gastroenteritis than usual, Heip said. But he acknowledged that is anecdotal evidence only, and the extent of the danger is unclear.

Philippart said some of the effects could even themselves contribute to global warming.

The greater acidification of the ocean might mean that algae would be able to capture less carbon dioxide, she said. "Then there will be a further increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to greater warming."

Project CLAMER is holding a conference in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday.

There is much going on with our oceans today. It is essential that we work to preserve -- and best utilize -- this natural resource. The ON Project is just one way to help and raise awareness. Share your thoughts with us: www.TheOnProject.org.

People are not causing the oceans to heat up. The platlets on the ocean floor move just like on land but the ones on the ocean floor vent methane and heat from the core. It is a naturally occuring cycle. Not everything can be blamed on people or car emissions. Al Gore doesn't care about the environment he cares about getting his face in the press and making money for himself. And if they would build desalinization plants along the California coast they wouldn't have to steal water from other states to fill their swimming pools.

Incorrect! There is a temperature gradient that perfectly matches the rise of CO2 in the atmosphere. The history CFC usage is also recorded in the circulation of the deep ocean currents. Thermohaline circulation keeps a very accurate record of what we do.

Exactly, Linda! I am so glad that Gore never did become president back in 2000. He's too narcissistic for his own good. And you're right about CA stealing water from its neighbors.

Heard about the American Legislative Exchange Council? They're going to own all the states and, eventually, the federal government very soon. For 20 years or more, ALEC has been drafting model state laws, which were leaked in July to the Center for Media and Democracy and The Nation magazine.

This is relevant because in the nine categories of laws discovered, of which as many as they can move are passing through the tripartite (gov and 2 houses Rep) and other state governments without discussion (about 32 states so far), there is a set of laws regarding environment. Those laws forbid any state (and ultimately federal) government to make any law restricting industry from polluting or damaging environment, and prohibiting any state from spending any money to study or in any way respond to environmental pollution or change.

We have anticipated this and a thousand more harms for decades. We--the citizens of the nation of ALEC--are in the process of forbidding our nation or citizens to respond to save our country or ourselves.

Even Michelle Bachmann believes in global warming. About the only holdout on the planet is Dick Cheney. And of course he still believes there are WMD/s in Iraq, so go figure.

Wake up everyone - this isnt about Money or Politics.

Yes things like this have happened before in the Earths history.

But before we did not have to ability to do something ...

... you know being a cave man and all.

Wake up - this isn't a Geico Commercial - its REAL.

Now we can change it with a wink and a smile... Humans are amazing. We have the ability to stop the sun from changing our environment. We are seriously evolving in ways unthought of before.

How insightful. But perhaps we do have the ability to lessen our impact on a tilting scale. Maybe you can't stop the butcher from pressing his thumb on the scale but you can buy less meat.

Don't drink too much of the Global Warming Cool Aid. The earth has been warmer and colder, CO2 has been higher and lower, If CO2 is higher how come we have not seen increase in Temp every year. And by Al Gore's Hockey Stick Graph, it took 800 years for the higher CO2 to raise the Temp of the earth. And by the way how can 3/10 of 1 percent of the atmospheric gases "control or influence the other 99.7percent?? Things do change all the time that is why real scientists can't tell you why we have Climate. Best wishes. be flexible.

Yes, the earth has been both warmer and colder, but not at any time during the period of human civilisaton. Whether our civilisaton can survive the warmer temperatures is an untested hypothesis.

The problem with AGW is not just the amount of change but the rate of change. Previous eras of climate change occurred over millenia or longer. Animals and plants need longer to adapt.

If you think that a small amount of a substance can't do anything meaningful, you might try ingesting 0.03% of your body weight of cyanide (Please don't). An even smaller dose of digitalis is an effective heart medication, but a larger dose is the poison belladonna. Sometimes, a little can go a long way.

What happened the last time the ice melted and the seas warmed? And the time before that?
And the time before that? Oh thats right, we had ice ages in between. All that climate history
and here we are in spite of it all, except this time its supposed to be man's fault.
02:19 PM on 09/14/2011
It must be fun to be you. No concept of time or history. All the climate changes you so lovingly recall, though not able to personally witness, took place over enormous time scales compared to the current changes. Man never existed in numbers then to be a geologic forcing. We most definitely are one now. .

And skeptics also forget that the only reason they know about past climate change is because of the research of some of the same scientists have researched human caused climate change.
