Leonardo DiCaprio Covers GQ, Talks Money And Success

Leo

First Posted: 09/13/11 06:56 PM ET Updated: 11/13/11 05:12 AM ET

There are a lot of unbelievable things about the heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio: his never-aging lady friends, his boyish good looks (that are seeing him through his thirties) and, of course, his mind-boggling success.

But, in the October issue of GQ, the actor reveals something even harder to swallow: though he earned a jaw-dropping $72 million dollars last year, in his younger days, DiCaprio had no idea his blockbusters were profitable.

“Throughout my career, I never knew which movies of mine made money and which didn't. When "Titanic" came out, people would say, ‘Do you realize what a success this is?’ And I'd say, ‘Yeah, yeah, it's a hit.’ The [money] stuff never mattered to me until I was into my thirties and got interested in producing, and people would show me charts explaining what finances a movie, what you'll make from foreign, what you'll make from domestic, what you need to make an R-rated film that's a comedy versus a drama. But even now I say that unless you want to prove that you can carry a film with your name, continuously trying to achieve box-office success is a dead end.”

It may be a dead end for other actors, but for Leo, it seems par for the course.

Leonardo is definitely underrated as an actor and would like to see him win an Oscar. My opinion is he's this generation's Robert DeNiro, William Holden and, yes, even Henry Fonda . His acting just gets better with time and does his look. One of his first movies, "The Basketball Diaries" was a wonderful movie and his performance was defiitely Oscar-worthy. Interestingly, the one movie - Titanic - he was nominated for wasn't, I thought, not his best although good. He is definitely underrated and I'd like to see him win an Oscar or, at the very least, nominated soon but what do I know, right? "Shutter Island" was not only a fascinating movie and, again, an Oscar-worthy performance. I hope he will be appreciated soon. I suppose either you like him or you don't. I think he's a wonderful actor. Will be buyin the current copy of GQ just because of him.

We need more articles on Leo the man and actor. Too often we have headlines about who he is dating. While interesting to some, I am more interested in hearing his takes on his experiences throughout his acting career. I think he is gifted, much like Johnny Depp.

He would need to make a sex tape to get coverage from HP.

Good call. Even though he's better looking the Jimmy (in my opinion, anyway), based on the type of roles he takes, definitely Jimmy-esque.

Leo is his generation's Brando with a little Jack Nicholson thrown in. Good actor. Handsome guy.

Hmmm, I see none of that. But he is a good actor, sometimes I feel his boyish looks get in the way of the role he is portraying.

Agreed on the boyish looks. He never really physically grew into the actor he has become. Still a great actor, but never gonna have the real stage presence he needs to carry certain roles as he gets older.

Good actor; handsome guy: agreed.

But this generation's Brando/Nicholson? I'm not so sure about that. He hasn't played enough gritty, bad guys to be either of those guys, IMO. That said, though, I don't know who he's like from Old/Older (as in recent, but not too recent) Hollywood. Similar to a Paul Newman, but not really on that level (not yet, anyway). Same thing with Gregory Peck--maybe he'll be there one day? Or a Robert Redford? Hmm, I don't know.

But now that I think of it, has Leo ever played a bad guy? I know he was a criminal in "Catch Me If You Can" and not the greatest person in "Basketball Diaries", but I don't think he's ever played a villian. Oh! King Louis in "Man in the Iron Mask"! Not his best role, but he was definitely sinister as King Louis. Any others?

Funny. I see just the opposite problem. He's always playing these haunted angry guys...one after the other over the last ten years. I'm kind of looking for him to do something a little different...maybe even play a famous leader now that he has better chops. I thought he would have been perfect for a good Alexander the Great film. Instead, someone made a bad Alexander the Great film and mis-cast it.

I'm not knocking his talent, but I'd like to see him stretch. Your Paul Newman and Redford analogies are probably closest because , like them, I think his appearance (boyish) affects his ability properly hit certain roles. He may do his best work after he gets more lines on his face in his 40s. He can draw you in, but it can take time.

Love Leo. If he had done it for the money he'd be just another Hollywood caricature.
I'm looking forward to seeing him in the long run when the others have fallen by the wayside.

I am on a quest to own all of Leo's movies on DVD. recently rewatched "Body of Lies" and "Shutter Island" (that oh-so-subtle last scene with Marc Ruffalo!) and boy, does this man deserve industry-wide recognition or what? If there is one "old Hollywood" he reminds me of it would most definitely be Paul Newman. And I don't say that lightly, considering PN is firmly atop my personal pantheon of cinematographic legends.
Looking forward to "Hoover" and anything else that grabs his acting fancy.

He's got this "old hollywood" thing about him. Pretty much keeps it classy most of the time. It would be nice to see more actors like him.

here here. hes a real star, and blows most of the other 2nd rate actors out of the water.
