Mount Rainier: Man Falls From Cliff, Dies After Taking Photos With Son

Roger Alan Wagner fell from a cliff to his death at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington Monday, shortly after taking pictures with his son above Christine Falls.

The incident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Monday, but rescue workers could not begin recovery efforts until Tuesday morning. The 59-year-old Florida man's body was found about 100 yards downstream from the park roadway, The Associated Press reports. Water had carried the body over the 69-foot falls.

Wagner and his 31-year-old son were near the park's Comet Falls trail bridge before the accident happened, according to the Seattle Times. The pair had hiked up the trail to get a better view of the waterfall.

Park spokesperson Kevin Bacher told the Seattle Times that Wagner's son heard his father fall and called out to him but received no answer.

News of the death comes after a missing hiker was rescued from Mount Rainier in July. Rescue workers found Steve Haley, 65, also near the Comet Falls area, according to The Olympian.

Racher said there are about three deaths per year at Mount Rainier, The Seattle Times reports. Wagner is the fourth recorded death for 2011.
