Facebook Unveils 'Subscribe Button,' Giving Users An Entirely New Way To Connect

Facebook Subscribe Button Tips

Facebook is rolling out a feature that introduces an entirely new relationship category to the social networking site.

Until now, users could only “friend” one another on Facebook. Starting today, they'll also be able to "subscribe" to each other thanks to a new setting that allows individual profiles to behave more like Facebook fan pages.

A user will have the option of adding a "subscribe" button to her profile to enable people who are not her friends to see her public updates in their News Feeds, rather than having to visit her profile page directly. She will receive a notification when someone has signed up to see her updates, and will have the option of controlling who can comment on and "like" her posts.

“Some people who post publicly have a public presence and want to interact with people beyond their friends,” Naomi Gleit, director of product at Facebook, told The Huffington Post. “This allows them to reach people beyond their friends.”

In a blog post, Facebook suggested that "journalists, artists and political figures" might take advantage of the new tool. “If you see a Subscribe button on your favorite blogger’s profile, this means you can subscribe. Just click the button to get their public updates right in your News Feed,” Facebook wrote.

Though it remains to be seen how -- and if -- users will take to this feature, the subscribe button appears to have the potential to shift the social dynamic on Facebook by changing how people connect and how they communicate.

Facebook etiquette may redefined as people are forced to decide whether it’s more appropriate to “friend” someone they just met or merely "subscribe" to him. Is it too forward to "friend" a boss instead of "subscribing" to her? Is it creepy to "subscribe" to a girl you just met? Will you be offended if a colleague chooses not to "subscribe" to you after you "subscribe" to her?

Facebook’s new feature marks yet another effort to encourage people to share more on the social networking site, this time by carving out a new space for individuals to post information to a far broader audience than their friends. It enables Facebook to function more like Twitter and suggests an effort to encourage public figures to update Facebook the same way they tweet -- frequently, publicly, with breaking news or short musings. If "subscriptions" catch on, could it change the nature of what people share on Facebook? Rather than primarily viewing it as a platform for communication among friends, some users that had seen Facebook as a place for personal updates could transition from sharing to broadcasting.

The subscribe button is also an attempt to improve the relevance of what Facebook users see in their News Feeds. Not only can it be used to sign up to see posts by non-friends, but it will also enable users to fine-tune what information appears about their friends.

The tab, which will be visible at the top of all friends’ profile pages under the heading "subscribed," lets users tell Facebook to show more, less, or the same amount of information about a person.

"Until now, it hasn’t been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed. Maybe you don’t want to see every time your brother plays a game on Facebook, for example. Or maybe you’d like to see more stories from your best friends, and fewer from your coworkers," Facebook wrote. "With the Subscribed button, you can choose how much you see from them."

Facebook wants the status updates it displays to be interesting -- people will not return to the site as frequently if they’re shown posts from people they care little about -- and the subscriber tool enables Facebook to receive feedback on whose updates it should or should not include. Selecting "all updates" from a dropdown menu will tell Facebook you are interested in “everything" a friend posts; choosing "most updates" indicates you’re pleased with the status quo; and picking “only important” will limit the updates you view to major events.

“We want to give people more control over what people see in their News Feeds,” Gleit said. “Facebook is growing quickly and people have more and more friends, but they care about different people more or less, and different stories more or less.”

I do not care to read about you or anyone's personal email, profile or what you had to eat for dinner or your personal life. Everyone deserves privacy and no one should be violate or rape by anyone or by agency,

Mark needs something to do with his mind than he should read the laws of privacy along with Sheryl Sandberg. Stay out of my private life and ask me for my permission before doing it. I have rights and they should be respected.

Facebook does what it wants and does not care about how their clients feels, I want to be heard and have choices to say yes, no or maybe. I do not like to be told what to do by anyone or agency. I definitely, do not agree of the face recognition program that locates a person anywhere in the world. Then sell or give it to the government /s for their usage. I am a human being and I was born free not into slavery. Stop your watch on me through your programs and using others to monitor my activities…Mark and Sheryl. Go read THE LAW BOOKS at any law library in the state of California.

I am curious to see if Mark Zuckerberg will revolutionize IPOs by offering to the average American citizen first. I propose 50 -100 shares per one US Social Security number investor first before offering to big corporations and wealthy individuals. He’s in a unique position and I truly believe he can revolutionize IPOs as we know it today. The impact of this idea will forever change the level of playing field between hedge-fund managers and your average Joe the investor.

What a laff riot. Each of my previous posts about this (now apparently deleted or not yet posted, though no "pending comments" are showing, was followed by a Facebook window wanting me to post my comment to my wall there. No, no and no, and it did it again and again. Finally I went to my preferences here in HuffPost, hunted for the item where it said this account was linked to Facebook, I said I wanted to unlink it, it wanted to ask me "are you sure?" twice, then finally unlinked me after asking me to use my password - to reset my pasword- as part of the confirmation process. But I NEVER LINKED MY ACCOUNT TO FACEBOOK....which begs the question - WHO DID????? And don't not post this HuffPost moderators, other readers have a right to hear this, and I have a right to say it, no matter how uncomfortable it is for you.

You screwed with my privacy by linking me to Facebook unasked.

The laff riot is once I was done all that, antoher FB window popped up asking me if I wanted to link my account to Facebook.......

ROTFL. You people are a piece of work.

That much thought into it? God help us all. But, wait. There's more.

"people will not return to the site as frequently if they’re shown posts from people they care little about "

Then, I don't know...don't friend people you don't really care to know about? Have we really become this stupid?

This is the second item you've had on updates to Facebook, and it's just a press release. Are you their new promotions arm or what? Add on top of this the false claim made on my account that I created my profile on HuffPost via Facebook, and it's starting to look like you're part of their predatory marketing and information gathering system. Not cool, not cool, not cool.

Play with the devil, reap the whirlwind. If all you're turning into is a tool of Facebook, November 5th may have some ugly surprises for you as well.....

I do not want to be suscribed to on Facebook.
On youtube it makes more sense.
I would rather have a youtube subscriber than a friend.
On Facebook, I would rather hang out with my Friends.

This is an exercise in redundancy. I have a small circle of friends I've known since high school, and that's it. Even then, I get a bit tired of hearing what they are making for dinner, or what pets are doing. Who cares, right? I only post when I have something amusing to share, because I am not so egotistical to believe anyone cares what I am eating or where I am going. Silliness, I say.
