Changed the game by: Inspiring the next generation to fight for a healthy ocean.

She's already been called a living legend by the Library of Congress, but Sylvia Earle, the renowned oceanographer, author and explorer, won't rest until everyone understands that the survival of the planet depends upon the health of our oceans. To combat the current Asian culinary trend of eating shark fin as a delicacy, Earle joined together with the Ocean Geographic Society to convene 1,000 kids in Hong Kong's Cyberport, having them pledge: "I am the future... I won't eat shark fins!" Addressing the crowd, Earle said, "Sharks are beautiful animals and if you're lucky enough to see lots of them that means that you're in a healthy ocean. You should be afraid if you are in the ocean and don't see sharks. That means the ocean is in trouble, and if the ocean is in trouble, we're in trouble." In May she gave an inspiring speech to the graduating class at Smith College, urging them to take action: "You have managed somehow to come along in what might be, and I think it will be, the most important time in history, if, what you have in mind, is making a difference in the future of the world."

The stuff of legend: To date, Dr. Earle has led over 70 expeditions and logged over 6,500 hours underwater. She's traveled 100 feet below the water in the Bahamas in a submersible Deep Diver while four months pregnant in 1968, led an all-female research deep sea expedition in 1970, and, in 1979, walked untethered at a lower depth than any living human before or since -- 1250 feet -- off the island of Oahu.

Charles E. Campbell, Founder & CEO of Allen Hydro Energy Corporation (AHEC) http://www.ahecEnergy created a renewable energy startup that has a game changing innovative process for generating large-scale hydroelectricity inside a downtown 70-Story building.
Denied stimulus funding by DOE and the Obama White House, in favor of Pay-To-Play companies like Solyndra, AHEC is activity looking for seed funding to test and validate his renewable energy startup outside of Ohio, where the color of his skin may not matter.

Using the trendy terms such as "climate apartheid" and "environmental racism" unnecessarily injects racial identity politics into the environmental movement and in the long run weakens it. It should also be mentioned that South African is as much of a den of crime and corruption now as it was under apartheid.

Oh, you R/W trollops are too cute by half. Before using any possible excuse to mention Solyndra you should know that the Bush administration was hell bent on funding the company. Nobody is impressed with selective observation. Solyndra won't even be an issue in 2012. The T-Bags will be far more concerned with Roe, marriage equality and creationism crackpottery.

Somewhat OT but HP should stop playing privacy games. The link to this page goes through Atlas (advertising) Solutions which is a Microsoft subsidiary. Before the user ends up here, Microsoft will place a ton of cookies on the user's computer (unless the browser is set for selective acceptance). The Internet is now surfing the user.

The investors were Obama supporters who had a sure thing, either make money or have any loss paid back by the US taxpayers ....just look at the facts and what happened ....when Obama shows up at a company its the kiss of death.

Renewable energy development is creating jobs and results in systems that supply clean energy, both at a much lower cost than nuclear or fossil fuels. See http://www.dblinvestors.com/documents/DBL_energy_subsidies_paper.pdf

Agreed!! Not to diminish the actor's good works, but Earle has spent more than five decades researching, exploring, and advocating for the oceans! This is not a hotness contest. (Disclosure: Sylvia Earle is my Mom, so of course I'd like to see her win, but I do believe she's earned it more than someone who's only in first place because he has a pretty face).
