Allen West To Michele Bachmann: Everglades Drilling 'Absolutely Off Limits'

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann recently said she would consider drilling for oil and natural gas in the Everglades. It seems, however, that some Floridians aren't on board with the conservative congresswoman's stance on the issue.

Among those who have taken issue with Bachmann's position is Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.). The Broward Palm Beach New Times reports that a letter was sent from West to Bachmann on Tuesday in which the Florida Republican puts his foot down with Bachmann on the matter.

"I believe safe and responsible offshore drilling is an important part of a comprehensive energy plan, however, drilling in the Everglades should be absolutely off limits," West wrote.

The message comes in the wake of the GOP congressman telling The Palm Beach Post that he would "straighten [Bachmann] out" on the position she communicated about drilling in the Sunshine State.

Last month, West suggested that Bachmann made "an incredible faux pas" with what she had to say about the contentious issue. The Hill notes that in Tuesday's letter, West informed Bachmann of the area's history in an attempt to give her an understanding of the situation's environmental gravity.

In discussing the prospect of drilling in Florida last month, Bachmann said, "Of course it needs to be done responsibly." She added, " "If we can't responsibly access energy in the Everglades then we shouldn't do it."
