Somebody better call Patrick Star.

A man dressed in a SpongeBob SquarePants costume was detained -- but not arrested -- outside of Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Wednesday after an alleged altercation with two women, the Los Angeles Times and TMZ report.

TMZ has obtained exclusive video, available below, of the incident.

Steve Boelhouwer, who works at a creative agency across the street, told HuffPost that he snapped the picture (also available below) from his office window using his iPhone 4.

SpongeBob has had a rough week. On Monday, a study was released in the journal Pediatrics that says children who watch SpongeBob can have
problems with learning and short-term attention.

And this isn't SpongeBob's first run in with the law. In June, a man dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants was arrested in New York for allegedly harassing straphangers, according to Yahoo!. Adam Horovitz, a member of the Beastie Boys, detailed the incident on the band's blog.

So the man is detained, but what happened to the women? Or is this another example of the Female Sentencing Discount at play? (prior to even getting to sentencing of course!)

He was arrested even though the women *clearly* initiated the scuffle? Interesting.

He was "detained," but not arrested. It would appear that the women were also detained.

Im pretty sure the wench with the pink hair does not attend USC. Why do people who don't or never attended the universities where their clothing? Is it the same as people who wear glasses with no prescription?

Well, given that most Us receive state and federal support, I say more than just the students have an investment on them . Then there is all that commercialization Universities do themselves. You know, all that being part of the community and local pride jazz. Believe me, I live roughly at the same close distance from USC and UCLA, it's impossible to ignore them. Plus, for that matter, most people don't also play in the NFL, MLB, MLS, or NBA and still they wear their merchandise.

Both those broads should have gotten decked. They think they're all tough cause he's not fighting them but personally I wouldnt have critisized him if he socked one or both them in the mouth especially after they're acting like a bunch of mutts barking at a snake picking at it like a bunch of cowards.....too bad a bus didnt drive by and clock them........(no i dont believe in hitting a woman, but those 2 aren't women)

why did spongebob get handcuffted he didnt do any thing those women did all the hitting
11:12 AM on 09/16/2011
Ever since OJ the laws are as such that no matter what all a woman has to do is claim a man did something to her and the guy gets cuffed and stuffed even if he is the only one bleeding and the woman is the only one with red knuckles and holding a knife. Ask any cop you know and they will agree with this statement and check out how "Women In Crisis" constantly monitors police communications for domestic violence to make sure that the man gets locked up but yet they do not care about the husbands who are abused and are arrested and charged for domestic violence even though they were the victim. There are many men who have fell victim to this one sided law and have had their lives ruined, lost their careers, cannot be bonded or handle any type of weapon ever and have a label they did not earn that will never go away and will follow them the rest of their lives and will adversely affect their chances for employment and ever having a normal life. Women are increasingly becoming more and more aggressive, confrontational, combative and downright violent and it has nothing to do with women’s rights or empowerment but everything to do with criminal behavior yet little or nothing is done.

A few years back while coming thru Port Authority in NYC my grandson started crying uncontrolably. And i soon found out the problem. He saw a spongebob doll an wanted it. It took 40 bucks to calm him down an get the doll. So for that reason I have no sympathy for spongebob. I'd like to beat him down myself.

If you go on YouTube you can see literally dozens of videos of people fighting with these costumed clowns. Apparently it has beome a serious problem because they are essentially brazen and aggressive panhandlers harrassing passersby, particularly tourists. My initial reaction would be like the rest of you to blame two loud and obnoxious women fighting poor Bob - but if you know the situation you understand how bad a nuisance these costumed panhandlers have become. There is a daily army of Batmen, Supermen and other assorted costumed idiots who show up to panhandle. They are worse than pigeons. They heckle and harrass and become very aggressive in their panhandling. Every so often they heckle and harass the wrong person and a beatdown occurs, as this tape shows.
01:07 PM on 09/19/2011
Was it proven that in THIS case THIS costumed character was doing the same? I couldn't care less about other costumed characters...the only issue is what was happening in this case.

Further, when did it become ok to punch and kick someone because they merely talked to you?

These women are at fault regardless of what this guy said for two key reasons:

* We don't live in a society that usually condones hitting unless you are defending yourself.

* They are women attacking a man. This type of violence is always wrong because it sets up an uneven power dynamic since he isn't permitted to defend himself (as evidenced by the cops going after him and not the other way around).
02:27 PM on 09/20/2011
Yeah it was proven. Look at the tape. The issue is what is happening with all these characters and what happened here is entirely symptomatic of what goes on on a daily basis. He provoked them and wouldn't give it a rest, hence he got punched and kicked. They will probably be charged and convicted if that makes you feel any better.

"While we don't live in a society that condones hitting unless you are defending yourself" parenthetically speaking, we do live in a society where if you harrass or annoy the wrong person you are apt to get your block knocked off. He should know better and he got his head handed to him. Uneven power dynamic? WTF. Yank off the costume and give a sharp right uppercut to the supposed aggressor(s).

A drunk was "merely taking" to some passerby when he got knocked out. Ooops. Certain conduct invites violence. Violence and aggression breeds violence and this guy got a smackdown. Maybe he'll learn his lesson. Maybe not.

In my expierience with Hollywood Blvd, it's not the costumed people, but the rappers selling mixtapes that are aggresive and rude. I find it's pretty easy to ignore the guy in the silly costume, not so much the guy shoving CD's in your face.
