Off-Duty Cops Kills Pedestrian, Charged With DWI

Luis Arnao, a 25-year old police officer, was arrested early Wednesday morning after killing a pedestrian with his 2011 Honda Accord. The victim, 22-year old Tyre Chisholm, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Arnao was not on duty when he struck Chisholm in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. After police found Arnao's blood-alcohol level to be .07, he was charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and operating while intoxicated.

"He got hit hard," said Devine Douglas, a witness to the crash. "He flew up in the air. His shoes flew off with his socks still in them."

Arnao, who joined the police department in July 2010, was released on $20,000 bail and suspended with pay from the New York Police department.
