Puppy In Texas Rescued From Crack In The Ground (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/16/11 03:00 PM ET Updated: 11/16/11 05:12 AM ET

A small puppy in Texas was saved this week after it nearly became the latest victim of the state's severe drought. Animal control officers spent 40 minutes digging the puppy out of a large crack in a backyard in Garland, Texas, reports KXAS.

The month-old puppy, which may now be named Lucky, is back with its owners. Ten-year-old Ketrick Sanders and his mother only had the dog for a day before it disappeared into the crack.

Miraculous animal stories aren't uncommon these days. A cat named Willow from Colorado will soon be reunited with her owners after being found 1,600 miles away in New York City, five years after she went missing. Last month, Miami firefighters rescued a dog that was trapped under a car for several hours.

Other rescues haven't gone as smoothly. Officials at a Six Flags in California broke into a customer's car to save a dog from the heat, but it escaped before the owner could claim her pet.

If you would like to be a hero to a puppy, consider adoption. PetFinder.com and the ASPCA both offer resources for finding a pet in need of a good home.

If there's anyone familiar with TX law...is it legal to adopt/buy a puppy under 8 weeks?  I don't see a law covering this.

Southern states are notorious for lax animal laws and regulations.
but i'm sure this pup wasn't bought or adopted. more likely somebody's dog had pups and gave them one (too early at that).
many Southerners still don't believe in spay/neuter and let their dogs breed unchecked.
ESPECIALLY neuter - and i don't have to tell you why.
i run into this mindset all the time in all the southern states.

I am glad th puppy was rescued......but I would be wondering more about where the crack came from and why, than I would about how the puppy got into it

Something isn't right about this story. As many have said, that puppy is far too young to be away from its mother. These people had it for one day??? I don't get it, and I don't like it.

These animals, always expecting the government to rescue them... Why should Texas taxpayers pay for this puppy's irresponsible behavior?

I refuse to buy anything advertised. Maybe if more of us did -- and let HuffPo know -- they might change things. But I guess it would come down to who controld more money.

Thank God there are good people out there who'll still go the extra effort to help an animal in need. Makes my heart smile :)

Poor little baby!! I hope the owners take better care of that little guy and why was he allowed outside by himself?? Puppies that young can't really go to far on their little legs.

...Except for down a drought-caused crack in the ground. We have a fenced in back yard, and when our big outside dog had pups, they stayed outside the whole time.
12:44 PM on 09/18/2011
That's terrible. Puppies should never be left outside alone. I also hope that since you don't plan on caring for the puppies, you do what you should have already done and have your dog spayed.

Re: the second video where the dog's collar got caught on the engine: If you have one of those S-rings for rabies shots on your dog's collar and looped carpet, don't leave your dog alone.

You know how dogs like to mash their faces into the carpet? Well, I came home to my hysterical screaming dog caught in the loops of my berber carpet. The sound was blood-curdling to me as I walked into the house. I was away for two hours. The poor thing was exhausted, had twisted the collar so it was almost strangling her, and terrified.

I still get heart palpitations thinking of it, because I only came home that 'errand day' because I forgot something I had to return.

I'm glad you made it home in time to rescue your poor dog. What a terrible scene to come home to and what a terrifying time she must have had. I like to think your dog's guardian angel played role in you returning home in time :) Glad your both well.
