Floyd Mayweather Jr. Beats Victor Ortiz With Controversial Knockout

By TIM DAHLBERG   09/18/11 04:13 PM ET   AP

LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. won the fight with a questionable – if legal – pair of punches that Victor Ortiz never saw coming. He followed it by berating an 80-year-old announcer in the ring and demanding he be fired.

Later on he would insinuate that the only way Manny Pacquiao keeps winning is that he's juiced.

All in a night's work for boxing's bad boy, and a profitable one at that. Probably not as profitable as Mayweather claims, but a huge payday without doubt.

He sells because people buy pay-per-views to either cheer him on or yell at the big screen in hopes he will lose. On Saturday night he won for the 42nd straight time, and he wasn't about to offer up apologies for how it was done.

"Once we touch gloves it's fight time," Mayweather said. "It's open season."

Mayweather came back from a 16-month layoff to stop a fighter 10 years younger than him, which by itself wasn't much of a surprise. He was a 5-1 favorite to use his speed and experience against an opponent who was in a megafight for the first time.

The way he did it, though, was the story of the night at the MGM Grand hotel arena.

Those who love Mayweather will say he exploited a mistake by the relatively inexperienced Ortiz. Those who hate him will claim he's a dirty fighter who hit Ortiz when he wasn't expecting it.

Mayweather himself didn't really seem to care either way.

"Eventually he was going to get knocked out anyway," Mayweather said. "What comes around goes around. Things happen in this sport. It's protect yourself at all times."

If Mayweather needed an excuse, it may have been because he was mad. A few moments earlier Ortiz deliberately head butted him in the corner, a move that cost Ortiz a point on the judges' scorecards.

He apologized to Mayweather, even giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Another brief hug followed in the center of the ring as the referee seemed to indicate that the two fighters continue.

While Ortiz looked off to the side, his hands down, Mayweather hit him with a left hook and a right that put him on the canvas. Ortiz struggled to get up before referee Joe Cortez counted him out at 2:59 of the fourth round.

"I was looking at Joe and he said 'break' or something and I'm like, huh?" Ortiz said. "Whatever. Bottom line is I had fun. It was fun."

If Ortiz was upbeat for a fighter who was stopped early in his biggest fight, he had reason to be. He made $2.5 million, sustained no serious injuries, and did nothing to damage his reputation as a fighter who either drops the guy across the ring from him or is dropped himself.

Not beating Mayweather won't derail his career. After all, 41 fighters before him over the past 16 years have failed to do the same thing.

"I made some mistakes tonight and I apologized to the public for it," Ortiz said. "But I definitely want a rematch."

That's not likely, if only because it doesn't make a lot of financial sense. And Mayweather, who was guaranteed $25 million, didn't earn his nickname of Money without always thinking about the bottom line.

That may be a reason the Pacquiao fight never gets made. No reason for Mayweather to risk his unbeaten record for a big payday when his paydays are already plenty big.

"I don't need Pacquiao," Mayweather said after the fight. "Every time Floyd Mayweather goes out there he's going to make $70 million, period."

If Mayweather deserves criticism it's probably not for the two punches that ended the fight prematurely. He won the first three rounds anyway and appeared well on his way to dominating Ortiz, and he certainly wasn't happy about being head butted intentionally just before the sudden knockout.

But he didn't need to berate HBO's Larry Merchant in the post-fight interview in the ring, which the 80-year-old responded to by saying he would beat up Mayweather himself if he was 50 years younger. And he didn't need to press his claim that Pacquiao uses steroids when there is no evidence to indicate Pacquiao does anything other than train well and fight even better.

That's the world of Money May, though, where reality sometimes mirrors what happens in the HBO "24/7" reality series that sparked Mayweather's lucrative pay-per-view career. The 34-year-old does things on his own terms. While he has gotten in trouble outside the ring because of that, he reigns unbeaten in the place where he is most comfortable.

"Once you get me in the square circle, that's my home," Mayweather said.

There's still an outside chance Mayweather and Pacquiao will fight next May, assuming Pacquiao beats Juan Manuel Marquez in November. Pacquiao's camp has already said he will agree to Mayweather's demand for unlimited drug testing, though Mayweather still doesn't seem terribly interested in fighting Pacquiao.

"All Pacquiao is doing is fighting my leftovers. That boy doesn't want to fight," Mayweather said. "Doesn't matter. Whoever you put in front of me, they can't beat me. They can't beat me."

I'm indifferent to Mayweather at this point. This was the perfect way for him to win the fight- opportunistic and a little on the dirty side. If your Money you win by any means necessary.
Don't get me wrong- I appreciate his skill but everything else about him is so contrived.

Manny is more of a champion than Money will ever be, he has stayed quiet and returned home to help people by becoming involved in politics.
That gives him An element of class that pushes him up with Ali, and his roll in "politics"
Mayweather won't do anything but talk about himself, and give the feeling that he finally has what has been coming to him. Even if he steals it when the other boxer isn looking, and that is theft.
12:29 AM on 09/27/2011
That may be true but Mayweather can still school Manny in the ring. Don't fool, yourself.
05:45 PM on 09/27/2011
Yeah, class will be in session for both of them I think. There is no doubt that Manny better be looking when it comes or class won't count.
Money just has to be able to go long because Manny might take him there, if they both aren't on Medicare before they fight.

Yeah, Mayweather is the guy who "wants to clean up the sport of boxing". Hypocritical lying cheat.

Did Victor agree to the same demands Floyd's camp has issued to Manny?

I doubt that they made any demands.

They wanted to fight Ortiz for the payday.

Look, nobody can blame Floyd for avoiding Manny, Floyd's value

would drop after having been beaten by Manny.

Why should Floyd go out and lose? How does that benefit him in the long run?

Thats why Floyd and Manny won't ever fight.

Floyd will be game, when Manny is washed up.

I understand and agree with you...I just wish he'd stop saying that Manny is the reason that they haven't fought...I think most boxing fans know he's just posturing and doesn't want to look like a punk...it's just sad that with all his trash talk all he's done is made himself look like a coward...

The above says...

That may be a reason the Pacquiao fight never gets made. No reason for Mayweather to risk his unbeaten record for a big payday when his paydays are already plenty big.

"I don't need Pacquiao," Mayweather said after the fight. "Every time Floyd Mayweather goes out there he's going to make $70 million, period."

...and that's why Mayweather isn't a respected World Champion. Because he hasn't beaten the best in the world and seems to be avoiding the best fighter in the world. I can't remember Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Tyson, Ali, Frazier or any of those guys ever dodging a fight. And that's why they are the greatest.

You my friend, are a very sage man, who speaks the truth and backs it up with perfect examples. I made this same comment a few days back. Obviously, you recall the heydey of boxing at the welterweight divisions when Hall of Fame legends were at their prime. It was the era of Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler and Wilfredo Benitez. Again, all Hall of Famers. And they all fought each other. They felt it was their duty. The ONLY way to build their legacies as great champions. They gave us countless classic fights. They beat each other to a pulp.Grueling, classic slugfests. They never ducked each other.

I'm so very sorry to all "Money" fans, but he's a paper champion. Brave enough to fight other great fighters who are past their prime, and fighters who are journeymen at best. Like his nickname says, all he cares about is the money, flaunting it and tossing up in the air at strip clubs like it isn't worth anything. The only chance he has to be RESPECTED as a legendary fighter is if and when he fights Pacquiao. If he doesn't, he will always be considered a coward who ducked the only true challenge of his career. That would change as soon as he gets into a ring with Manny. WIN OR LOSE. It wouldn't matter. After that fight, he can then declare himself a great fighter worthy of the label of "legend". Until then, he's just a greedy punk.

Hopefully Ortiz learned a valuable lesson: Don't headbutt someone then keep your guard down after the ref says 'commence'.

When the ref separates you and then motions for you to resume fighting, if you come out with your arms down, you're fair game and you deserve to be knocked out! I've been watching boxing since the days of Dick Tiger and Rocky Marciano. There's no such thing as a "sucker punch" once that ref tells you to resume fighting! Ortiz deserved what he got. All of that being said, Pacquiao will clean Mayweather's clock!

THANK YOU! everyone hates mayweather as a person, so they do away with common sense, and invent reasons to down him...
11:14 PM on 09/19/2011
The vicious illegal headbutt by Ortiz was very wrong but I think the act of kissing a brotha like he's ur bit.. on ppv was the ko clincher. Just like the heckler at the Kat Williams' comedy show, don't ever front a brotha on stage cause the results won't be pretty. Ortiz would have had better luck if he would have did the Mike Tyson ear bite instead of a freakin cheek kiss on Mayweather. For all of the clowns that get off calling him gayweather on a blog, be advised that Mayweather would most likely knock you out from 8 to 80 (hehe Larry M.) bald, crippled or crazy.

If Ortiz doesn't blatantly head butt him then he doesn't get knocked out. He was asking for it.

When the ref says to resume fighting, you don't approach the other guy with your hands at your side. Period. He deserved it.

Mayweather will get his when he finally stops being a coward and agrees to the fight we all want to see.

They touched gloves dude. How was Money dirty for that especially after Ortiz tried to hug him the second time! Nah it was almost like Ortiz felt so bad that he wanted to get hit!

If May was losing the fight; BADLY, and had purposefully head butted Ortiz three times.
And Ortiz had clocked him out of the break, these hypocrites would be cheering.

Clint Eastwood: "He should have armed himself."

Seemed to me that Mayweather was trying to get back at him for the head butt. I know he intended to sucker punch him but I think he was surprised at how hard he hit him and that Ortiz got knocked out. I don't think his intention was to knock him out put to give him some payback for the head butt.

You know what, I thought the same thing actually!

I don't think Floyd even expected Ortiz to be knocked out then, he just wanted to punish him for the headbutt!

Perhaps you guys need to watch the clip from a different view:
http://youtu.be/24d6Pbt8dQg

Mayweather is in fight mode, Ortiz was clearly unfocused and too apologetic after Cortez clearly says "Let's Go!" 00:31.... Whether it's an MMA fight or Boxing, fighters acknowledge wrongdoing from a distance by extending gloves, but not letting your guards down.

Ortiz was purely not ready for the big stage quite yet.
