CINCINNATI — The top-ranked competitive eater in the world and reigning king of the World Bratwurst Eating Championship has defended his title in Cincinnati, washing down 35 brats in 10 minutes.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Joey "Jaws" Chestnut approaches the contest like a sport.

Chestnut, a construction manager in San Jose, Calif., says he prepares by fasting for two to three days before the contest, which took place at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, North America's largest Oktoberfest.

The 10 male competitors put away 170 brats in 10 minutes Saturday during the officially sanctioned contest.

One observer called the contest "pretty wild" and said he didn't know whether to throw up or get a brat for himself.

For his victory, Chestnut won $2,000 and a golden Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati chicken hat.

Today Joey Chestnut World Champion speed eating Bratwurst Champion stepped off a plane in the war torn and starving Country of Somalia. He was smiling and carrying a huge and almost unmanageable tray of Brats on buns. As an enormous crowd of people near death from lack of food surged forward believing he had arrived on a humanitarian mission Joey suddenly pulled the overloaded tray back and looked out over the crowd and was heard to have said. "This is mine. You get yours". Undaunted the starving crowd rushed forward anyway eating not only all of Joey's Brats but the tray and Joey as well. We will miss you Joey.

People starving all over the world, even here in America, and we hold bratwurst eating contests.
Gluttony is a crime against nature.

Completely agree with you. Eating contests are terribly offensive to me knowing there are thousands literally dying in Somalia as I type this. I wish these types of contests would end. Hunger in the world will not.

I'd go with Usingers. Made in Milwaukee for the last 130 years using original German recipes.

Just like people chasing cheese down a hill, or throwing tomatoes. I guess those events are dignified.

Well if they are metaphors for their respective countries then yes but I was more talking about the fact that America is the largest consumer of basically everything and eat way more than their share.

This is a good competetion and is a genuine fun event, no to be taken too seriously above its entertainment value, and we should all rejoice at living in a country where freedom and bounty abound, and our citizenry can enjoy all aspects of this great country.

Can we stop treating food like it is meaningless, disposable entertainment? It used to be these stories showed up about once in a year, and I could ignore them. Now they show up, over and over, every couple of weeks. These guys have rankings!

It is morally repugnant to cheer for such conspicuous waste while so many die for want of food. Food is life or death for half the world.

Your comment reminds me of the "toilet scene" in the Eddie Murphy movie, "Meet Dave," after his alien character had participated in a hotdog-eating contest. Hilarious.
