Peyton Manning Underwent Stem Cell Treatment For Neck Injury

Peyton Manning Stem Cell

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 09/20/11 12:28 AM ET Updated: 11/19/11 05:12 AM ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has reportedly undergone a stem cell treatment in Europe because of a neck injury that is so far this season keeping him off of the field and on the sidelines, according to news reports. Manning is currently suffering from a bulging disk in his neck; he has undergone surgery several times this year to correct the injury.

Manning's treatment is not approved in the United States, and involves using the four-time MVP's own fat cells to regenerate the nerves around his neck, AOL Sporting News reported.

The New York Daily News reported that Manning underwent another neck surgery after undergoing the stem cell treatment.

Athletes are allowed to undergo stem cell therapies "unless a banned substance is used as part of the procedure," an NFL spokesman told The Daily News.

Adult stem cells are able to grow and become a cell for a specific tissue or organ, according to the National Institutes of Health. They are different from embryonic stem cells, which come from fertilized eggs or aborted fetuses. Embryonic stem cells can turn into cells for nearly any tissue in the body.

Popular Science reported that Manning probably underwent a stem cell procedure involving induced pluripotent stem cells, which "can be reprogrammed to become any type of cell."

Manning's treatment is raising the eyebrows of some doctors, who say that the treatment doesn't have any scientific evidence to back it up, ABC News reported. There are also concerns about the message Manning is sending to the public, since people might go on to copy the procedure that might carry extra or unknown risks, according to ABC News.

"There are many proposed therapies that are being tested in clinical trials, and there are more to come," Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, director of the stem cell program at the University of California, San Diego, told ABC News. "But in the absence of reliable evidence, it is impossible to know whether the 'treatment' will make Manning better or worse or merely financially poorer."

GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry also recently underwent an experimental stem cell treatment with hopes of relieving a back problem, but doctors were concerned about that procedure as well, saying that the procedure could induce cancer or blood clots.

The Texas governor's procedure was "an unusual choice ... quite controversial because there isn’t good evidence yet, at least in the medical literature, that fat cells work better or even work at all in repairing bones," Cleveland Clinic orthopedic surgeon Dr. George Muschler told the AP.

I don't understand why even a news regarding a football player must be pervaded by comments about Republicans, America...It's just as appropriate if people made comments about Manning in news regarding Congress or any other political agenda

It's just mentioning another person that most people will recognize as someone who has undergone the same type of surgery. It's newsworthy because the GOP point of view on this type of surgery is that it is sinful, or wrong.

I am a big fan of Peyton, but if he has to go to this extreme, he should seriously consider retiring. He is a young, rich man who can hopefully do other things with his life.

Things are here. Wish you were great.

I say it shows his passion for the game. How many people do you know that would have a risky surgery in another country just so they can get back to work? Retiring is easy.

Ok. So, if gods forbid, you suffer an injury that keeps you from working, do nothing to get over the injury.

I wish he'd slow down and let it heal at it's own pace instead of trying so hard to fix it instantly. After all, you only have one neck and it's the only thing keeping your head hooked up with your body.

What doctors dont understand is that once a person becomes disabled they will try anything to get back to being their former self. " I have MS " If anyone wants to use me for a lab rat, go ahead what have I got to lose?
With mannings money what he is spending is chump change.

and clearly all the surgeries with "scientific evidence" didn't work but im sure it loaded the pockets of his doctors!

I also have MS and I totally agree with you. If it was available to us, that would be a great hope for our disease. With his money he can travel and do anything, which I would do too. My MS Specialist has a big stem cell lab at his office going on with major research, that will be OUR ticket one day. Good Luck to you and Good Health!

The treatment didn't work. Not sure that disproves the claims.

That said, I agree with your subtext that the archaic anti-science political agenda has hand-cuffed progress.

The treatment didn't work? It happened about 2 weeks ago... I think it is a bit premature to claim that it didn't work.

And yes- America does not have the best health care in the world. Our life expectancy and our infant mortality rates show that.

I'm actually making a statement regarding people who claim that Canadians come to you for health care (which I have never witnessed) due to it somehow being the best in the world.

It is interesting that the wealthy are seeking medical treatment outside of America.

Republicans used to say that everyone comes to the US for treatment... but thats just not the case.

Many businesses in the US are offering free plane tickets and expenses for their employees who want to fly elsewhere to get treatment so they won't have to pay as much for employee health care.

Now our businesses don't want to pay for the health care that they claim to be the best in the world. It's just too expensive. Gee, i wonder why. But we can't have 'socialized' health care here. That would be un-American.

Outsourcing of health care, just another part of the right wing American dream.
