Virginia Family Sues Starbucks Over Hidden Toilet Camera

Va. Family Sues Starbucks Over Hidden Toilet Camera

WASHINGTON -- If you use the restroom at Starbucks, you might want to look under the sink first. A Virginia family is suing the coffee chain in D.C. Superior Court because of a hidden camera positioned under the sink pointed at the toilet in a unisex restroom at the Starbucks location at 7th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue downtown. As WTOP reports:

[William] Yockey determined the camera was on and recording digital images.

Police were called, and the video camera was confiscated for a criminal investigation.

... Yockey and his daughter suffered "permanent and continuing emotional pain and suffering, humiliation, embarrassment and great emotional distress."

It's not clear who put the camera in downtown Starbucks in question, but this isn't the first case of a hidden camera in a Starbucks restroom. A Connecticut man was arrested for installing hidden cameras in restrooms in the Hartford area, two at Starbucks, one at a gas station and another at a Subway restaurant, according to the Hartford Courant. The man, Paul Deveau, was charged with 12 counts of voyeurism.

There have been similar incidents in San Diego, Glendora, Calif., and Brandon, Fla.
