The Kosher Haircut (PHOTOS, AUDIO)

First Posted: 09/19/11 11:35 AM ET Updated: 09/19/11 11:35 AM ET

There are mohawks, crew cuts, clean shaves and fades. Full beards, goatees, chinstraps and soul patches. And then there are kosher cuts -- haircuts ordained by Jewish law.

In neighborhoods with large Jewish populations like Midwood, Brooklyn, posters with specific guidelines are easily spotted on barber shop windows. Whether it is nixing a blade for beard trimming or working around the peyos, men's hair stylists like Giuseppe "Pino" Davi and Isaac Ishakov deliver what their customers, and their faiths, prefer.

Ideally if you are a jewish man, you want to keep a full beard untouched by any razor and you want to have some slight at the very least length to the corners of your scalp. One place (DINonline) says that your side curls need be at the very least half a cm to be able to fold upon itself. For me today, I am at about 5-6 inches and it is not very noticable. The ultra religious will grow their side curls out in what are called peyos. I do not know, but I feel very strongly that if you are jewish, you do not want to shave the corners of your scalp. It is a bad practice and will yield a less affluent life for the wearer of this broken jewish law. And of course you can trim or even remove your beard, but a full untouched beard will offer you more light in your universe. Just a thought.
