Obama Hails DADT Repeal: End Of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Means Gay Servicemembers 'No Longer Have To Lie'

Barack Obama Dont Ask Dont Tell

WASHINGTON (AP/The Huffington Post) -- President Barack Obama is marking the end of the ban on gays serving in the military. He says the armed forces will no longer lose the skills and combat experience of so many gay and lesbian service members.

At one minute past midnight EDT, a new law took effect repealing a 1993 law that allowed gays to serve only so long as they kept their sexual orientation private.

Obama says that as of today, "patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love." Obama also said that he wanted those who were discharged under the 1993 law to know that the U.S. deeply values their service.

Below, Obama's full statement on the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal:

Today, the discriminatory law known as 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is finally and formally repealed. As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love. As of today, our armed forces will no longer lose the extraordinary skills and combat experience of so many gay and lesbian service members. And today, as Commander in Chief, I want those who were discharged under this law to know that your country deeply values your service.

I was proud to sign the Repeal Act into law last December because I knew that it would enhance our national security, increase our military readiness, and bring us closer to the principles of equality and fairness that define us as Americans. Today's achievement is a tribute to all the patriots who fought and marched for change; to Members of Congress, from both parties, who voted for repeal; to our civilian and military leaders who ensured a smooth transition; and to the professionalism of our men and women in uniform who showed that they were ready to move forward together, as one team, to meet the missions we ask of them.

For more than two centuries, we have worked to extend America's promise to all our citizens. Our armed forces have been both a mirror and a catalyst of that progress, and our troops, including gays and lesbians, have given their lives to defend the freedoms and liberties that we cherish as Americans. Today, every American can be proud that we have taken another great step toward keeping our military the finest in the world and toward fulfilling our nation’s founding ideals.

Wow - Why isn't the repeal of DADT Day - the headline story? This site has changed.

Thank You President Obama and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for your leadership - pushing the repeal of DADT all the way through the Congress - now it is irrevocably dead. If President Obama had tried doing it by Presidential decree - it would be all mucked up. President Obama deserves credit and votes; he has delivered on many of his promisses. We need to get behind him.

Thank goodness we can move past this disastrous period of time where anti-American, fearful, childish, bigots prevented Americans from participating in service to their country. I am so proud to see days where our country can socially advance and get on balance with the rest of our global humans.

As for any future repeal of this rule, despite who is in the White House and Congress, it will be virtually impossible to repeal and go back to our past of closeted behavior and evil bigotry. Even the best minds in the armed services have come out and publicly proclaimed that DADT was a bad idea. The political chances of reversal are virtually none.

I am ashamed that my country has tried to discriminate, and accomplished discrimination against my American brothers and sisters. I hope we can make needed amends for this and move forward as a stronger nation.

Do you have to work really hard to come up with these kinds of thoughts? Or do they just come to you real natural like?

Turns out that while Obama was fighthing for the gays (which was good), he was being an arse to the ladies on his team (hostile work environment). Pretty ironic to treat some groups with such reward and downgrade others who have made such much progress. It's a good and bad day.

My goodness all these negitive comments.
It appears mostly from people who have never served.
There are rules inplace todaythat dictate conduct while in uniform from Sexual assault to fraternization. The rules have not changed, negitive behavior will be punished as outlined in the UCMJ

Obama spends his time doing anything but talking about jobs.

What a liar, you are. Obama not only talks but, he actually came up with a plan. Unlike the GOP who only talk.

He just talked about jobs last week - Remember, he spoke about it before Congress - where there were a few Republicans who didn't attend - presumably because they didn't want to hear anyone talking about jobs. But what was even more newsworthy is that they took time to try to delay this repeal as late as this past weekend. Those Republicans will do anything to avoid talking about jobs.

If you did that, your actions were no different than a gay's actions. Are you gay?
