Crack Pipe Show And Tell: Kindergarten Boy Brings Mom's Drugs To School

Trying to impress your classmates with bizarre and surprising show-and-tell items is fine -- some might say it's even part of growing up. But one Missouri student went a little too far.

A kindergartner at Sweet Springs Elementary School shocked his instructor earlier this month when he presented the class with his mother's crack pipe and drugs later identified as methamphetamine, KCTV5 reports.

After school administrators contacted authorities, police arrested the boy's mother, 32-year-old Michelle Marie Cheatham, and charged her with possession of a controlled substance and first-degree child endangerment, according to Saline County's Marshal Democratic News.

"When I called the prosecutor about it, they said, 'You're kidding me, aren't you?'" Police Chief Richard Downing told KCTV5.

Teachers made the show-and-tell discovery on Tuesday, Sept. 6. and police charged Cheatham six days later.

The drugs were reportedly worth around $3,700.

One day a few years ago, some of the neighborhood kids brought a younger kid, probably about three years old, to my door, asking if he was mine. I said no, and they told me he had come out to play with them, but it was time to go home, and nobody knew where he lived. I went with the child and a couple of the other kids to the doors of many of my neighbors trying to find his home. I was going to make whoever claimed him show me pictures of him before leaving him with them. But nobody had any idea. I took the kid back to my place, gave him something to eat, and called the sheriff's department.

A week or so later, the officer returned to my door and told me that they had located the child's mother. She was passed out on the floor of a nearby home from smoking meth, which was why she didn't answer the door when we knocked. The child had been placed with his grandmother. Speed kills.

I hope the mother can get all the help she needs. Hopefully, after she is done with treatment, she can realize that her son is the most important thing in her life, not drugs.

Well when I was a 2nd grader I brought a big teddy bear to show and tell. It was a gift my older brother's girlfriend gave him. I didn't know about 20 condoms were stuffed in the back of it. Oooops.

Drug possession itself is illegal. So did they charge the kindergartner (or the teacher) - whoever was holding the stuff when the police showed up?

I hope this motivates more parents to take more of an interest in their children's schoolwork.

Alright I'm a bit late on this story, but I have one BIG problem with it. The kid went to school with Mom's pipe and $3700 worth of dope? B-S !!! No way in the world this is right. Stories like this make me seriously doubt the media.

Why is it specifically labeled a "crack pipe"? Are very similar or the exact same type of pipes used to smoke both crack and meth? I'm just wondering why it was called that if it does not appear it was as likely being used for that (though it could have been as well I'm sure) as it was for a different drug actually...

There is a difference between pipes used for crack and those used for meth. Most often a crack pipe is a straight tube where the rock is lodged in the end. A meth pipe has a hollow bubble at the end with an opening to place the drug. The reason for a hollow bubble is because meth needs a heat source without direct contact to flame. The pipe is turned while the meth is cooked inside, releasing the smoke that's inhaled through the pipe.

Well I'm thinking it's quite possible this was mistakenly labeled a "crack pipe" when it was actually a "meth pipe," just because people do/did not know the difference and "crack pipe" has become something of a popularized term (vs "meth pipe")...

That kid went straight into foster care then hopefully to a relative who isn't an idiot, or addicted to dangerous drugs. Its gonna be messed up for that kid.
