Occupy Wall Street Enters Its Fourth Day, Tensions Rise (VIDEO)

Occupy Wall Street

First Posted: 09/20/11 04:40 PM ET Updated: 11/20/11 05:12 AM ET

The 'Occupy Wall Street' protest entered its fourth day on Tuesday, as anti-corporate protesters continued to occupy parts of lower Manhattan. While the organizers had hoped 20,000 would show up and dance, do yoga and raise awareness of the opposition to current economic policies, the turnout has been smaller -- but equally fervent. Many protesters are still there four days in (and they even got a celebrity appearance from Roseanna Barr, who urged the government adopt a "new capitalism.")

The Times reported Monday that at least five people were arrested, including some who were arrested on an obscure law banning public assembly while wearing a mask. Many of the arrests indeed have been over minute, often semantic, disagreements.

From the website OccupyWallStreet.org, which has been monitoring the protest:

The first arrest was a protester who objected to the police removing a tarp that was protecting our media equipment from the rain. The police said that the tarp constituted a tent, in spite of it not being a habitat in any way. Police continued pressuring protesters with extralegal tactics, saying that a protester on a bullhorn was breaking a law. The protester refused to cease exercising his first amendment rights and was also arrested. Then the police began to indiscriminately attempt to arrest protesters, many of them unsheathed their batons, in spite of the fact that the protest remained peaceful.

The Occupy Wall Street Twitter feed says that one of the protesters is in critical condition.

While the protest's organizers had stressed that they wanted this to be a peaceful occupation, tensions have flared between the occupation and the cops assigned to keep order downtown. The group Anonymous claimed that cops have increased their presence and stolen recording equipment from some of the protesters.

You can see from this video that things are getting a little rough, as cops and protesters seem to be filming each other, waiting for each to make one false move:

How about that. The tea party can use bullhorns, even in small meeting rooms, do everything they want to disrupt a meeting with a Democratic Congress person, and even carry guns, but if you demonstrate against the man, you better not even wear a mask.

Every time I see a child, I want to join one of these protests. There are millions of people like me and the worse things get, the more of them will decide something has to be done. You are right. It's all about the future. I admire the courage of the people who are already doing it, and if I have a windfall, they will get some of it.

The Police are reverting to the 1960's version. Instead of siding with the common man, remembering that they too are Union members, they are reverting to the puppets of the wealthy. Unfortunately everyone in this country tied their retirement accounts to the stock market including the NYPD 401, making us all slaves to there corruption. All the Unions in America need to stand together!!

Why wasn't this ever on the Huffpost main headlines? A mass protest with loads of police running around should have been front page news. Did huffpost sell its soul along with all the other media outlets?

Possibly some one lives in that city and doesn't want it to escalate.

Please, if there were only five of them and wearing tea party hats every news outlet in the city would be there.

I am not sure I understand why they are protesting Wall Street. Wall Street is only a market place where people buy and sell ownership of companies. It seems they are protesting the public ownership of private companies. I saw one place where it reported they were protesting Wall Street's government policy, but government policy is made in Washington DC, State Capitals, and local County Seats. A market is a place where people buy and sell things. I am surprised they don't protest Wal-Mart too for being a large market place.

Why are none of the major networks carrying this protest?! This is not a small protest, I can't see how they can refuse to cover this event.

Contact the news media and ask them why they are refusing to cover the Wall Street protests:

The media refuses to cover this story. They are owned and controlled by the people who are being protested against. Keep exercising your 1st Amendment right! Just like Arab rising began with social media, this will need it's help as well. It's time to out the oligarchs regardless of which side of the isle they are on!
