Rick Perry: Obama's 'Arrogant' Policy On Israel Is Endangering The Region

First Posted: 09/20/11 01:13 PM ET Updated: 11/20/11 05:12 AM ET

NEW YORK -- Attempting to strengthen his foreign policy chops, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) waded into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Tuesday, giving a speech that sharply criticized President Obama's policy on the issue.

The United Nations General Assembly is meeting in New York City this week, where Palestinians will be asking the world for statehood independent of Israel.

Speaking at the W Hotel in New York against a backdrop of U.S. and Israeli flags on Monday morning, Perry said the United States should stop funding the U.N. if it votes with the Palestinians.

"I think there are a number of things if the U.N. does in fact vote to allow statehood in direct conflict with the Oslo Accords," said Perry. "One of those is obviously having the United States send a clear message to the U.N. that we're not going to support you with our dollars anymore -- obviously shutting down that mission in Washington, D.C. I think the message needs to be swift, and it needs to be powerful."

The GOP presidential frontrunner was joined by newly elected Rep. Bob Turner (R-N.Y.) and members of New York's Orthodox Jewish community, including Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a Democrat from Brooklyn who has been highly critical of the Obama administration and bragged at the event about having helped to elect Turner.

Also speaking at the event was Danny Danon, a member of the Israeli Knesset who was criticized after inviting right-wing pundit Glenn Beck to address the legislative body. Danon also headlined Ralph Reed's conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C. in June.

"Simply put, we would not be here today at the precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama policy in the Middle East wasn't naive, arrogant, misguided and dangerous," Perry said.

"It must be said, first, that Israel is our oldest and strongest democratic ally in the Middle East and has been for more than 60 years. The Obama policy of moral equivalency which gives equal standing to the grievances of Israelis and Palestinians, including the orchestrators of terrorism, is a dangerous insult."

The Obama administration, however, has also been warning U.N. members to oppose the Palestinian bid for statehood and has mounted an aggressive campaign in the lead-up to the vote.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has argued that U.N. action would complicate a peaceful end to the conflict, saying, "We believe strongly that the road to peace and two states living side by side does not go through New York, it goes through Jerusalem and Ramallah."

At the start of his speech, Perry gave a shout out to Turner, who just won the special election for Anthony Weiner's former seat -- which had been in Democratic hands since the 1920s -- by appealing to the district's socially conservative Jewish voters.

"It's always a great joy to introduce a person that you admire by what they have accomplished, and your newest congressman fits that bill -- Bob Turner," said Perry. "He is obviously a leading voice on this issue that we are speaking about today."

Turner, however, told reporters afterward that he was not yet committed to Perry or any other presidential candidate, saying, "I'm absolutely supporting the winner of the Republican primary."

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, also put out a statement before Perry's speech calling the situation at the U.N. this week an "unmitigated disaster." He said the Obama administration has made "repeated efforts over three years to throw Israel under the bus and undermine its negotiating position."

Tuesday's speech was certainly meant to give Perry some increased credibility on foreign policy.

On Sept. 15, Perry wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal saying that the United States must support Israel at the United Nations.

Jennifer Rubin, a conservative blogger for The Washington Post, praised the substance of the piece but said that "Perry almost certainly didn't write it" because "his own foreign policy views are rudimentary."

What "anti-lsraeI" policies would he be referring to? The US has already declared it is going to veto any Palestinian bid for statehood, and asking lsraeI to return to its '67 borders is a plan that is actually supported not just by the Palestinians, but by the entire Arab League, the EU, Asia, and even the American public. In fact, the only ones who DON'T support that plan are lsraeI and the US government.  Read More...

All the evidence supports that the UN does not endorse world peace, but rather it is a puppet organization used a tool for the US corporatist agenda.

(Reaches over turns off the fan, dusts off jacket..) The U.S. Corporatist Agenda was Hi-jacked long ago, and it wasn't by the United Nations. Do you need names? Start with Murdoch, the one with all the Criminal Headlines, that is currently sniffing around Rick Perry...How about we worry more about what we know than what we can speculate? And keep Criminal Elements out of our Politics from the get, go...K? We know Murdoch is a crook, what are we gonna do about it? Seeing how we don't like Puppets? Oh, and he had a meeting with Rick Perry. Yeah, I forgot that part.

Well, I agree with Perry's criticism of Obama's policy toward Israel. But I doubt highly that Perry is a friend of the Jews.

We quickly forgot his statement about Bernanke:

Rick Perry does anything for money. Does he support the jewish peoplw, no just look at the comments the "religious leaders" that he had as his response rally, have made about Jewish people.

Does he believe in freedom of religion yes as long as it is Christian. He did not invite any non Christians to particpate in his prayer rally, he required a prayer breakfast for teachers before the start of the school year and again only represented Christian religions.

So does he support Israel, yes but that is only so he can have his biblical principles come true and have the second coming. On by the way Gov Perry Yahwah( is not how we descirbeG-d) but that is what folks call g-d who believe Jesus was the messiah. Guess you really will say anything for money..........

Be careful PT Barnum Perry has only begun, watch out for those slick videos, commercials, etc. Pery the second coming of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Phil Gramm. Can't wait.

The NYT article today - front page - about the GOP (specifically Congress) relationship with the Israeli government is terrifying. The constitution is very clear about separation of powers when it comes to foreign affairs. The GOP cannot continue these relationships and then, on top of it, be so irresponsible as to bring the presidential campaign into the throes of our foreign policy decision-making. They don't know what they don't know. One of the things has struck me about President Obama's promises as a candidate vs his delivery - in particular relative to defense and foreign affairs - is what knowledge he has now and what he knew when he was running for office. Clearly he has data that has influenced his thinking and views and therefore his actions. Perry is grossly out of line and once again, the GOP presidential slate is proving to be as reckless as feared. We cannot have another GWB in office that just says stuff and then lets machiavellian forces take over from behind the scenes.

Gov. Perry said that he couldn't be bought for a campaign contribution of $5,000. That raises the question: Is there a price at which Perry's loyalty is for sale?

Novartis has donated $700,000 to the RGA since January 2006.

Merck has given $28,500 to Perry's gubernatorial campaigns since January 2001, according to a new report by Texans for Public Justice.

Perhaps more importantly, Perry's friend, former chief of staff Mike Toomey, became a lobbyist for Merck in Texas, a position he held at the time of the HPV-related executive order.

Since January 2006, Merck has given $377,500 to the Republican Governors Association, which was one of the largest backers of Perry's own campaigns. Perry served as the chairman of the RGA from 2007 until last month.

In 2009, the FDA also approved the drug Cervarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, which has given about the same amount of money as Merck to Perry's gubernatorial campaigns since 2001 and nearly FOUR TIMES as much as Merck to the Republican Governors Association since 2006.

Earlier this summer, lobbyist Toomey co-founded a super PAC known as Make Us Great Again to aid Perry's presidential run. According to NBC News, Toomey's super PAC plans to spend a staggering $55 million to help his man win the GOP nomination.

If Make Us Great Again does spend tens of millions to help Perry secure the Republican presidential nomination, what might Toomey and his clients be expecting a President Perry to deliver?

I would say my cat George knows about as much about foreign policy as Perry. Watching the video was painful, he can barely read the remarks prepared for him. Forget any depth of understanding of the middle east problems. This guy is completely out of his depth, a corporate puppet to the MAX.

"Naive, arrogant, misguided and dangerous"... Perry probably first heard this string of adjectives in reference to himself, but liked the sound of it and has been looking forward to the opportunity to use them. Of course, the Israel/Palestine issue is way too complex for Ricky. He like to keep everything simple to match his comprehension level.
