Falling Satellite: NASA Tries To Predict Where And When It Will Hit Earth (VIDEO)

MARCIA DUNN   09/22/11 12:50 AM ET   AP

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A dead 6-ton satellite is getting closer and closer, and is expected to smack down on Earth on Friday.

NASA's old research satellite is expected to come crashing down through the atmosphere Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. The spacecraft will not be passing over North America then, the space agency said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The predictions should become more precise by Thursday afternoon and certainly by Friday.

"It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any more certainty," NASA said.

An estimated 26 pieces – representing 1,200 pounds – are expected to survive.

NASA is anticipating a splashdown rather than a landing. Nearly three-quarters of the world is covered with water. The Aerospace Corporation in California, in fact, predicts that re-entry will occur over the Pacific late Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. But that's give or take 14 hours.

The 20-year-old Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to fall uncontrolled from the sky in 32 years.

It is expected to break into more than 100 pieces as it enters the atmosphere, most of it burning up. The heaviest metal parts are expected to reach Earth, the biggest chunk weighing about 300 pounds. The debris could be scattered over an area about 500 miles long.

So, if a piece of this space junk hits a skyscraper in downtown Tehran and the building collapses will Amidinanutjob blame it on a bomb hidden in the building by his opponents as the real cause of the collapse??????

And to give a person perspective.....6 ton is about 3 average size cars......so okay 3 cars bundled up together falling at sub sonic speeds and they are guessing? Wow it would seem NASA should play with the economy too! Oh wait we already have a bunch of fumblers on that. And one claims he can barley get by on his $400,000.00 salary! Do you understand the money we allow our government to sink into NASA, their own salaries? The money they have invested in NASA with no real breakthrus into the mysteries of "where did it all start, are we alone" is enough to get this country out of debt!!!!!!!!!! Trillions and trillions

Hey simpleton, more technology comes from the us military and nasa than you have brain cells. Maybe that was a bad analogy, Nasa has way more ideas..

Hmm?.....6 ton.......is a ton not 2000lbs......is that not 12,000lbs crashing to the earth not 1,200lbs......you mean the military can't intercept the satilite and shoot it with some high tech rocket and help ensure less impact? I mean we have droans that they waste all the time. Why not send an out dated passenger plane to intercept and crash into it? We know they burn up completely leaving no evidence, right? I mean look at footage of the Pentagon plane crash! Nothing left right?

Most of the 6 tons will burn up and not hit the ground. Only about 1,200 lbs will hit the ground.
