What do you get when you combine post-structuralist theory, Taoist philosophy and a Shanghai mall? 'Beyond Infinity,' a disorienting journey through mystical space complete with honeycombed panels, fractals of wooden frames, and endless mirrors. Artist and theoriest Serge Salat designed the transformed mall space, aiming to create a "journey, in which the visitor progresses into the reflected layers of dreams endlessly nested in each other."
The room measures 12.45 by 10.8 meters at a height of 3.8 meters. However, the dimensions are masked by the ubiquitous reflecting mirrors, and lattice grids throughout give the illusion of eliminating the space where viewers walk. Much of the design resonates with the design of ancient Chinese courtyards and their suzhou gardens, which recieve a 21st century revamp: "On a 9-channel system, the lighting varies from ultraviolet blue to white, traversing each minute a complete cycle that recreates the effects of dawn through sunset and night." The viewer is transported to a dream state without beginning nor end, all upon entering a Shanghai shopping mall.
Salat has written over 20 books on virtual art, labyrinths, urban planning, and more. This venture aligns ancient thought with modern technology for a dazzling result. Call it transcendental or call it disco, but definitely check out Salat's work in the video below.
