One In Four Young U.S. Children Living In Poverty, Study Finds

Child Poverty

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 09/22/2011 8:20 pm Updated: 11/22/2011 5:12 am

Twenty-five percent of very young children in America are living in poverty, according to an analysis of Census data released Thursday.

The number of children under six living in poverty rose to 5.9 million in 2010 from 5.7 million in 2009, researchers from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire found. The ranks of American children in poverty have swelled by 2.6 million since the recession began.

The dismal poverty rate among young children mirrors that of adults, who have been pushed into poverty in larger numbers by high joblessness and slow income growth. The Census Bureau announced last week that 46.2 million Americans were in poverty in 2010, the most since the agency started tracking poverty in the 1950s.

And as American parents struggle to land jobs amid a 9.1 percent unemployment rate, the jobs crisis has had an outsized effect on their children, according to the Economic Policy Institute. More than 18 percent of American children had at least one unemployed or underemployed parent, the organization found, compared with 9.1 percent in 2007, before the start of the recession.

Child poverty has been growing across the country over the last decade, the Annie E. Casey Foundation reported last month. Child poverty rate jumped in 38 states during the last 10 years, and about 43 percent of children live economically unstable households, according to the organization’s findings.

Children in the south have been hit the hardest by the economic downturn, according to the University of New Hampshire researchers. The South has the highest rate of child poverty at 24.2 percent. Mississippi had the highest rate of child poverty of all the states at 32.5 percent, the study found.

Very young children who grow up in poverty are likely to be affected later in life, according to the University of New Hampshire researchers.

"It is important to understand young child poverty specifically, as children who are poor before age 6 have been shown to experience educational deficits, and health problems, with effects that span the life course," the researchers said.

Elevated rates of child poverty could also have dire consequences for the country down the line. Child poverty is a “leading indicator” of the country’s future Patrick McCarthy, President and CEO of the Casey Foundation told The Huffington Post last month.

"Nearly all of the social problems that we worry about in this country are heavily correlated with child poverty," he said at the time.

What can we do to help these children? That should be the question - not whether there is a two-parent household, not whether one or another administration is to blame, not class warfare, not racial or ethnic identity -

It is the children who matter - not our individual ideologies, or agendas. Can you donate to a food bank? Volunteer at a school for mentoring? Volunteer to drive a family to a grocery store? Volunteer at a non-profit agency that helps the needy? Give a needy family with children the excess produce from your garden? Teach the head of the family budgeting and shopping methods and also how to best use the foods in simple ways?

No - these things will not cure the problem, but they will help alleviate it. Instead of just talk, let's have some action on the part of those who have the time and will to help.

Yep it is a class war and guess what the Pigs in the Financial and Corporate Sector created it with the help of the corrupt Bagger Republicans in office who are just as rich and greedy! the fact remains that the rich know no bounds when it comes to accumulating wealth they just want more at the expense of everyone else! History has proven that the masses have always endured the wrath of the rich until destitute becomes unbearable, then change does come about, well it's unbearable!

I have a hard time feeling sorry for the poor when they're living in run down houses, eating on food stamps yet driving a Hummer. is it poverty or priorities?

That Hummer may be the last thing they have - they may have sold the TV and furniture and computer, cut off all items possible, and have held onto their only means of transportation for applying for jobs, getting their children to the doctor and/or school, grocery shopping. That Hummer may be paid off - and the last thing they have.

People have to be thrifty when it comes to transport. Look at Amsterdam or China, they are not shy to drive a bicycle.

Meanwhile, the government gives trillions in bailouts to the banksters no questions asked, as well as mutli-billion dollar subsidies to oil companies that are extremely profitable.

Oh, sorry, but the likes of Tim Geithner are busy saving the European markets, George Soros is fueling speculation of a second dip and Rick Perry has been knocked down for supporting education -- Yes, that Rick Perry.

First this article has to be flawed for one if these kids are so poor and have been for the past 10 years . Then how come so many ipods , cell phones , $200.00 + sneakers are in the hands of kids . Not to mention all the other tech like video gaming . If poverty has been such a large problem with children for 10 years , then it was hiding itself . I remember being a kid in the 1970's when times were tough , and you did without or you bought the cheap sneaker for $10.00 not $ 40.00 . I could only imagine how tough things where 100-150 years ago . This is more leftwing prapaganda .

Red herring. A lot of the tech stuff would have been obtained when times were better. Even second hand clothing and shoes can look good. Cell phones plans are available that are cheaper than landlines. If you could not afford a car, a taxi or even public transit, you'd want a darn good pair of shoes to get you around.

If YOU were poor, would you want to LOOK poor???

If you are poor would you have a choice?

you sound very raciest, as it's the black kids that love those sneakers and the great example, tatooed and dumb, NBA guys . but what great jocks they are .. stop being so raciest, next thing is you'll accuse the asians of being hard working, love studing math/science etc . and critisixing the mexicans for being illegal and liginv off free medical, food stamps etc, and not wanting to learn english . stop beiing so raciest and be more open to what a wondrful diversified culter we're creatingl

The creation of a new government agency that will be dedicated to job creation, will only create more government jobs.

What a joke! The government can’t create jobs. Our only hope is to support small businesses, which create the majority of new jobs.

And you need to take control of your finances by getting financial education. The market is rigged against you. Your IRA and 401K are in danger of becoming worthless.

Learn how to leverage the financial crisis to create wealth and protect your family.

Useless advice for families with no ability to save money because their incomes are too low and who would gladly take a government job if it offered some stability.

End free trade, end work visas, and secure the borders. Until you're willing to stand up against wage suppression it will just get worse.

Circumstance, Choice, Consequence.

I know that some may not agree with me. I know that I'll get plenty of rude comments, but i have a solution to poverty and unemployment in this country. We MUST bring back slavery or some form of indentured servitude. The only way this country was able to grow into the great nation it is today, was because labor was cheap and it produced great profits. The cost of labor can never out weigh profit. there are those among us,who only have the intelligence to hold a broom or shovel. Most people in this country are nothing more than "button pushers" and "lever pullers". Our world was created and maintained by a small minority. The non productive must be servants to the productive, since in reality it is by the productive that the non productive live. The only product of the non productive is more of its own kind. Government aid only takes (by force ) from the productive and gives it ti the non productive. Indentured servitude would allow the productive to earn a profit and in turn the nonproductive would "produce" through labor. Production is the only solution to poverty. What keeps a man working is the prospects of an empty belly and empty bed.

The article clearly states that the problem has been growing over the last decade. In other words, it was growing even when Bush was President and the GOP controlled BOTH Houses of Congress. Furthermore, the last time the poverty rate has been this high was at the end of the first Bush's presidency. So, yeah, to some extent it was the fault of a Bush. Obama and ALL politicians share SOME blame, but so does Bush, FOR SURE....

Does it really matter? Poor is poor. How does it help the children if you starve them or force a father to stay in the house that doesn't want to be there? If that were all it took to bring a family out of poverty, they could prop a mannequin on the couch and, voila!, a father who is as involved as the one you want to force to be there and instant wealth for the family.
05:11 AM on 09/24/2011
Yes, it DOES matter. It has been proven that having a mother AND a father in a home to raise children matters. Having both parents would certainly be beneficial from the poverty or financial aspect, however, the family aspect is important for the emotional growth and well-being of the children. Statistics show that a dual parent evironment leads to adults who are more well adjusted and commit far fewer crimes than children raised in a one parent home.
09:19 AM on 09/24/2011
Single parent households with just the mother raising the children is statistically higher in poverty. That's what charlie was getting at. I'm sure you KNEW that though, who doesn't.
