Councilman Derek Reeve Criticized For Muhammad Remark

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -- A Southern California councilman is drawing criticism for mentioning in a public meeting that he named his dog after the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called on Derek Reeve to apologize for his comment at a recent San Juan Capistrano council meeting. The Islamic advocacy group says Reeve mentioned naming his dogs America and Muhammad during a discussion about a new dog park.

CAIR's executive director in greater Los Angeles says while Reeve has a right to free speech, his "distasteful remark" is unbefitting of an elected official. The city's mayor and another councilman also criticized Reeve.

An email message seeking comment from Reeve wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

The Orange County Register reports that Reeve said he named his dog Muhammad as a political statement.

i see nothing wrong with the dogs name, are we to cower in fear from using that word because of extremists? I would rather criticize someone who names their dog 'Spot' or 'Fido' I mean, COME ON! those are so overused

This was an irresponsible thing for an elected official to do: insulting to many of his constituents (obviously), and bad for SoCal's reputation. Given the importance of the tourist industry to Orange County in particular, I don't know what he was thinking. To make it a potential target, or just to scare off foreign visitors?

Not really, but since you're obviously not from around here, I'll explain it to you. Local ballots in SoCal are nonpartisan. Even so, it's easy enough to check. So let's check, huh? His public Facebook page says he's nonpartisan, but from the links he posts, I'd say he's definitely not a Democrat.
