Meg Whitman To Become CEO Of HP: Twitter Responds

Twitter Reacts To Meg Whitman Being Named CEO Of HP

Hewlett-Packard announced on Thursday that Meg Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, will become the company's president and Chief Executive Officer.

“I am honored and excited to lead HP. I believe HP matters – it matters to Silicon Valley, California, the country and the world," Whitman said in a statement released by HP.

Whitman's star-power could be an asset for a company that struggled to gain credibility under Apotheker, who was previously little-known outside of the business software world. HP is no stranger to celebrity CEOs. But Carly Fiorina's run as leading lady, from 1999 to 2005, ended in shambles..

She will replace Léo Apotheker, who held the position for only 11 months. Apotheker will also resign from his position as a director of the company.

Apotheker's short tenure as CEO was turbulent. Only weeks after introducing its tablet computer, the TouchPad, the company announced it was killing the program. According to the Associated Press, the company's stock price lost half its value while Apotheker was at the helm.

The Twitterverse exploded with the news, with Meg Whitman quickly becoming a trending topic. And in typical Twitter fasion, there was no shortage of snark.
