Thaddeus McCotter 2012 Campaign For President Being Terminated By GOP Congressman: Report

GOP Candidate Quits Presidential Primary Race

Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) is terminating his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, The Detroit News reports.

McCotter launched a longshot bid for the White House in July and competed in the Ames Straw Poll in August. The GOP congressman only secured 35 votes in the test of conservative strength, which was won by rival candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.).

McCotter told The Detroit News that as he exits the presidential contest he is prepared to throw his support behind former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. The GOP lawmaker cited not meeting the requirements to participate in various primary debates in addressing his decision to abandon his campaign.

"If they keep you out of the debates, you are out of the conversation and you can't run," he said. "It was sort of death by media."

The Michigan Republican was elected to serve Michigan's 11th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives for a fifth term during the 2010 election season.

A spokeswoman for McCotter told the Detroit Free Press that the congressman plans to run to keep his seat in the House in 2012.
