Forbes 400: Meet America's Richest Women (And Not Just Oprah And Meg)

Of the 400 richest Americans on this year’s list, released this week, just 42 are women, a number that hasn’t changed since last year’s list. Of these, only four — or 1% of the entire list — are self-made billionaires.

One of America’s four self-made super-rich women is former eBay chief Meg Whitman, who hit headlines this week with news that she’s been tapped to take over as head of computing giant HP. Her wealth got a boost alongside eBay’s shares, which were up 10% year on year. Forbes’ wealth team will be watching closely as she looks to turn HP’s fortunes around.

The richest self-made woman on the Forbes 400 remains, of course, talk show queen Oprah Winfrey. Her net worth is stagnant this year, still pegged at $2.7 billion. Whether her new OWN network will boost her fortune by next year’s list remains to be seen. The other self-made women on our list are Gap’s Doris Fisher and ABC Supply’s Diane Hendricks, who cofounded their companies with their late husbands.
