Japan Tsunami Footage Makes The Rounds Half-Year Later (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/23/11 05:06 PM ET   Updated: 11/23/11 05:12 AM ET

Amazing footage from a delivery truck's dashboard shows the incredible force of the Japanese tsunami that hit the country in March.

The video made the rounds on Twitter over the last couple days and even got billed on "Today" as "new video."

The problem with describing it as recently discovered footage is that the video has been on YouTube since June 20.

The clip has logged more than 1.7 million views over the last three months, with good reason -- the footage is disturbingly powerful.

So, as the old slogan goes, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you." If you're not one of the million-plus people who have watched the video, you can check it out below.

Following the tsunami, the use of nuclear power has been questioned in Japan. On Monday, the Associated Press reported that tens of thousands of people marched through Tokyo chanting "Sayonara nuclear power."

This is insane! I cannot imagine going through something so awful - being stuck in your car absolutely helpless to do anything but float and pray. Just awful. :(

happened to watch the "related video", at the end of which the announcer says that TEPCO has stated that there has been no damage at Fukushima-Dai-Ichi plant. Whether that was true at the time of the announcement or not, it certainly came back to haunt.

Build the LHC [large hadron collider]. Then when it malfunctions a blackhole will form. Thusly sucking in all the water from the tsunami. Problem solved... Actaully, I have a better idea but who cares.

Man that is scary. You could see the water in front and I thought, maybe they can go the other way, but all of a sudden the water comes from behind and you realize, this driver is f***ed.

It is eerie that he had the presence of mind to film the whole thing because he was in serious danger for his LIFE!!!

You could stay in your vehicle, which might turn over or get trapped and become your grave or you could jump out and probably get crushed to death by moving debris. Nice choice.

I do not know who this person is and probably never will, but wherever you are, thank you for filming this; it will help people be better prepared in the future.

Now, that was up close and personal. It's amazing that there were not more deaths.

after seeing this video, the destruction, the lives in danger and all you can say is they love pallets of color? You have become numb watching too many shock videos and movies.

Oh yeah -- right. Watch some more of those videos that show whole towns destroyed, buldings exploding, and the water just keeps coming and coming and coming. Florida has seen nothing like that--nothing! Shame on you for laughing. SHAME!

Not the first I've seen but definitely the worst to date. If the fears of all those who espouse Global Warming come true we will be seeing scenes like that on the US shoreline that will make past huricanes look like a poof of wind in a rain shower.

Ayu Za Kayiwaita....How could the announcer sound so BORED talking about what we just saw ?
09:47 AM on 09/24/2011
Actually if you understood Japanese you would know that the announcer's delivery style is used often in documentaries and news events. He doesn't sound bored at all, but rather intense as he describes the action step-by-step and in detail. The tension is felt as it builds to his final description when the video goes dark.

If we go green this won't happen again? Yeah right.. In Japan there are "tsunami warning" sign posts dating back OVER 600 YEARS.

Who's saying going green will preclude tsunamis?

ummmm..no one wanting to go green has EVER said that. That is not what scientists have said, this is not about global warming. That is about a natural occurrence called earthquakes (not caused by pollution but by tectonic plates moving). The greenhouse affect has nothing whatsoever to do with earthquakes. Japan is very susceptible to earthquakes because of their location.

Figures HUFFPOST wouldn't allow my comment about those who believe they are "entitled" to anything and everything! in this once great and disciplined nation. Too much REALITY you "HUFFERS?"

For once I'm grateful. This was a video of a tsunami.
10:04 PM on 09/23/2011
The resilience and roll up your sleeves and get to work mentality was amazing in the aftermath...and is still today. Unlike "other nations" whose population only knows to put there hand out and say "gimme." And, when they don't get it immediately "they" too frequently start crying things like racism and foul and the best one, "I'm entitled!" Get a grip "other nations" of the world and take heed from the population of hard working and DISCIPLINED people of Japan.(And so many nations when the spit hits the spam.) YOU ARE ENTITLED TO NOTHING! It seems like it will be much more sooner than later those "other nations" are fixing to find out how entitled...they aren't! The well is dry people.

I noticed the hands out attitude during Katrina and the gulf oil spill. I hope your "other nations" included the US.
