'The Wizard Of Oz' Slippers To Be Auctioned Off For $2 Million: Judy Garland's 'Ruby Slippers' For Sale

Slippers

Before Louboutins, Judy Garland had the most famous red shoes of all.

Now, just like the current red-soled heels, the "ruby slippers" can be yours--for a pretty penny.

According to Reuters, a pair believed to have been worn by Garland in "The Wizard of Oz" will be auctioned off in December, expecting to sell for at least $2 million.

The slippers are marked "#7 July Garland," and despite light scuffs on the soles, they are said to be in mint condition. They are one of four pairs that were created for the famous 1939 flick.

Over the years, the pairs have gone their separate ways: One is on view at the Smithsonian; one belongs to a private collector; and the third was stolen from Minnesota's Judy Garland museum.

Currently, the shoes are part of the memorabilia collection at California's Profiles in History. Owner Joe Maddalena said the hefty price tag will not faze bidders.

"This is the most important film prop in the world. There is nothing more famous. They are one of the greatest pieces of pop culture in existence."

How do we know these are the real shoes? Where the birth certificate?

Just kidding. There's NO BIGGER "OZ" fan than me. I would love to have the shoes but they're about $1,900.000.00 more than I have in my pocket.....

I have a pair for my Christmas tree though... I believe they're ruby red "Radko's"...

One of the things that really "made" The Wizard of Oz is the matte shots, the same thing that made King Kong a hit. Mattes are fantasy paintings that create a place that doesn't exist except in your imagination. A WOZ matte painting is worth, quite a bit. WoZ is from a book written by L. Frank Baum. There are two other major parts to it with Baum's corresponding books; Tick Tock and Ozma of Oz. Last time I checked Disney owns both of them. Both have incredible potential for films. How do I know all of this ? I used to own part of two studios, Paramount and Carolco....Al-

As in Gone With The Wind. I remember reading a book about the making of GWTW, and feeling dumped when I found out the long shots of Seven Oaks and Tara weren't real.

When I read the headline I said I thought I saw them at the Smithsonian Institute. The article said one of them is there. I am still sure I saw both of them. I don't really have a comment on the article but I have to tell everybody, if you have a chance to go to DC visit the Smithsonian do it. It is the best museum complex in the world.

The "one" pair of them are at the Smithsonian (not just 1 shoe). :)

I always thought a cool way to end "The Wizard of Oz" would have been when the film reverted back to black & white at the end have the camera pan under "Dorothy's" bed and zoom in the slippers that have been placed there (maybe by the Good Witch) and once again sparkle there Ruby-Red magic against a black & white background. Would have put another level to the fantasy.

You know with advances in technology, you can actually recreate the scene yourself, or pay someone peanuts to do it for you and put it on youtube. I am sure it would go viral and become a youtube sensation, and you can become famous. Just saying!!

Hey, you're right. Colorize the gray-scale value/pixels the way Ted Turner did with all the old MGM/Fox films, add a litlle Photoshop, Adobe Flash, DreamWeaver and voila. The film was made in 1939 so does that make it public-domain at this point? I'm all over it.
07:32 AM on 09/25/2011
Wow. That's a great ending. Much more fun than the original.
