Obama: GOP Vision Of Government Would 'Fundamentally Cripple America'

(AP) SEATTLE -- President Barack Obama charged Sunday that the GOP vision of government would "fundamentally cripple America," as he tried out his newly combative message on the liberal West Coast.

Aiming to renew the ardor of Democratic loyalists who have grown increasingly disenchanted with him, the president mixed frontal attacks on Republicans with words of encouragement intended to buck up the faithful as the 2012 campaign revs up.

"From the moment I took office what we've seen is a constant ideological pushback against any kind of sensible reforms that would make our economy work better and give people more opportunity," the president said at an intimate brunch fundraiser at the Medina, Wash., home of former Microsoft executive Jon Shirley.

About 65 guests were paying $35,800 per couple to listen to Obama at the first of seven fundraisers he was holding from Seattle to Hollywood to San Diego on Sunday and Monday. The three-day West Coast swing, ending Tuesday in Denver, offered him the chance to try to reassure some of his most liberal and deep-pocketed supporters.

The trip comes as Obama has shifted from focusing on compromise with Republicans on Capitol Hill to calling out House Speaker John Boehner and others by name. The president has criticized them as obstructionists while demanding their help in passing his $447 billion jobs bill.

The revamped approach is a relief to Democratic activists fed up by what they viewed as the president's ceding of ground to the GOP on tax cuts and other issues while the economy has stalled and unemployment is stuck above 9 percent.

Obama said 2012 would be an especially tough election because people are discouraged and disillusioned with government, but he also said he was determined because so much is at stake.

The GOP alternative, Obama said, is "an approach to government that will fundamentally cripple America in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. And that's not the kind of society that I want to leave to Malia and Sasha."

Obama got a friendly welcome from invited guests at his first stop. But elsewhere liberal activists were making plans to greet the president with demonstrations criticizing his policies or reminding him they want him to do more.

"We want to see Obama stand up as strongly as he can to fight for the people of this country who are working out there to make ends meet," said Kathy Cummings, communications director for the Washington State Labor Council. The council was helping organize a demonstration outside Seattle's Paramount Theater, the site of an Obama fundraiser later Sunday.

Obama and the Republican presidential candidates are working overtime to raise campaign cash ahead of an important Sept. 30 reporting deadline that will give a snapshot of their financial strength. Obama's West Coast visit was heavy on fundraisers: two each in Seattle and the San Francisco area Sunday, followed by one in San Diego on Monday and two in Los Angeles.

He's meeting with the Silicon Valley and Hollywood elite, including an event Sunday night in Atherton, Calif., at the home of Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.

The expected haul from all seven events: $4 million or more.

In addition to the fundraising, Obama scheduled a town hall-style event Monday in Silicon Valley, hosted by social networking company LinkedIn. The trip ends Tuesday with a speech to supporters in Denver, where he accepted the Democratic nomination three years ago.

Obama was pushing throughout for his job proposal, which combines tax cuts, unemployment benefits and public works spending. The bill faces a hostile reception on Capitol Hill, particularly because Obama wants to pay for it with tax increases opposed by Republicans.

A top aide, David Plouffe, said the White House expects a vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate in October. Despite reservations even from some in the president's own party, "I think it's got a very good chance" of passing, he told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

If he can't persuade Congress to pass the bill, Obama has said he wants to make sure the public knows who's standing in the way.

Jobs are a major concern in California, where unemployment stands at 12.1 percent, highest of any state except Nevada.

Mark DiCamillo, director of California's Field Poll, said that's contributed to a softening of support for Obama among Democratic and independent voters. Obama's job approval rating dropped to 46 percent among Californians in a Field Poll this month. Among Democrats it was 69 percent, but that was down 10 percentage points from June.

"Californians voted for him by 24 points in 2008 and the Democrats and nonpartisans were the backbone of his support and he's losing some of that now," DiCamillo said. "I think there's a lot of frustration in California about Washington. ... They're looking for Obama to do something."

The summer's nasty debate over raising the government's borrowing limit turned off voters. Many liberals bemoaned the deal that cleared the way for a higher debt ceiling, with Obama agreeing to Republican demands for steep budget cuts without new taxes.

But Democratic supporters are heartened by the jobs plan and Obama's insistence that Congress must raise taxes to pay for it. Now they're hoping that the confrontational Obama they're seeing now is the same one they'll see through the 2012 campaign.

"We wish that his fighting spirit had been there a few months ago, but it's here now," said Rick Jacobs, head of the Courage Campaign, a progressive online organizing network in California.

He is right! The problem is that he is willing to meet them half way on the destruction of America. This bi-partisan fanatic sees compromise as the solution to everything! It appears Obama has no position or belief that he will not compromise. That tells me despite his liberal retoric he stands for nothing!

What does it say about a country when a president as disappointing as Obama is still clearly the better choice than any of the other candidates now in the race?

Obama just lives to blame everyone, he'll never see himself as he truly is. He must have done this all his life. He doesn't have to be concerned about the GOP crippling the government because when he's done we will have a country in shambles that will take decades to remedy. Maybe that's why he and Michelle are soaking the country with all the trips with kids, family, friends and their family. Get all they can while the getting is good. I'm sure he knows he wont be around for another helping next term. A total disgrace both of them and don't believe for a minute that Michelle like us now. But I must say I enjoy his campaign speeches. I see it as Obamas comedy hour. Lots of laughs.

Because of the GOP and Tea Party membership of Congress deliberately refusing to work with President Obama to destroy the economy and keep millions of Americans from working; this President now and has been facing extraordinary circumstances, extraordinary measures, extreme measures and extreme circumstances since the 2010 mid-term elections. It is time, the President and the GOP and Tea Party members of Congress place the American worker before politics. Pass the American Jobs Act, or President Obama circumvent Congress with an Executive Order issued to the American Jobs Act II; that does not have the raising of revenue section in it. Then let the Federal Reserve through their mandate to maximize employment in the economy fund the payroll of the American Jobs Act II.

How many people are aware that there are 20,000 ground to air weapons missing from an unguarded armory in Libya?. Does anybody have any idea who might have these weapons. This is one of the results of our Unconstitutional entry into Libya. As for Obstruction: The Democrats have not submitted a Budget in over two years even though they had a Super Majority in Congress. The Republicans have submitted four Budgets this year and the Democrat controlled Senate has tabled all four and not allowed a vote on one of them. Who is the Obstructionist? The proposed Job Bill has 33% for plugging State Budget Gaps. It has 29% for Teachers, Fireman, Policeman and Construction workers which are all Union Jobs. I guess Obama thinks that all 25 million Americans either Unemployed are Underemployed are all Union Members. Ten percent of it is for High Speed Rail which is seen as a failure and not able to support itself. The rest is for such things as Green Energy.

The Democrats never had a super majority. Joe Liberman is an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, but often votes with the Republicans. He would be vote 60. Vote 59 is Bernie Sanders, also an Independent. Vote 58 was Al Franken, who was not sworn in until July 7, 2009, by which time Edward Kennedy was in the hospital suffering from his final bout with cancer and was no longer actively participating in Senate business, leaving the Democrats with 57 active voting members. So at best the Democrats had 59 votes when and if Lieberman and Sanders decided to vote with them. 59 votes does not make a supermajority.

Are you serious? So what if the limitations are no specifically limited in your example on the limitations of the Executive order?. I said the the U.S.Constitution put two limits on the Executive order.

It is getting a little tiresome telling you how to get from point A to point B.

The U,S, Constitution stares that Congress " HAS THE SOLE POWER TO REGULATE COMMERCE".The Oil Moratorium was regulating Commerce. How difficult is this?.\

. I suggest that you look up the Definition of "Commerce"
At any rate. I am finished with you.

It is Commerce. Your definition of Commerce is simplistic and doesn't apply. Not only that but Congress had passed laws which were on the books that limited the Liability of to a Corporation for an Oil Spill. This figure was Federal Law. The only way that this figure could have been changed was by Congress which regulated it. Obama The other way was through the Courts. Obama ignore it and intimidated BP into another settlement ignoring Congress and the Courts. It was Unconstitutional,
Either Obama was not being truthful as a U.S Senator or was no competent enough to make the statement about consulting Congress about Hostilities. You can't have it both ways. He has sent Ground troops into Libya. The number makes no difference. He said he wouldn't send "ANY". Now he has sent 100 troops to Central Afirca.

There is Solyndra which was his Centerpiece for Green Energy(his words) which OMB and the Treasury warned was not viable and he not only went ahead with it but the Loan was restructured so that Tax Payers are last in line behind Investors for Financial Recovery which is against D.O.E regulations, He gave 1.2 Billion in taxpayer money to Sun Power on the day the program ended last several days ago and three months ago sent a Plant to Mexico

Obama has united the GOP. He is correctly viewed as an attack on our rights, certainly not a President.

The result is that, he has lost all credibility and sincerity with the American people. All he has left is to milk the system and continue to pay off his crooked cronies, which he does well.

He has awakened the sleeping American Patriot giant. Obama will be crushed!

You got that right. I wonder why none of the GOP canidates has mentioned the 1305 million
that he wasted on 2 Solar panel companies and the million he spent fixing Egypts sewer system!

If the GOP candidates had mentioned those things then you would not have seen it in the Main Stream media. Have you seen any articles in the Main Stream Media about the Solyndra Executives taking the Fifth before Congress?. Have you seen any coverage of it on the T.V? Have you seen coverage of the fact that officials from the Department of Energy sat in on Solyndra board meetings and didn't raise any alarms?. Have you seen any coverage of the fact that the Loan Agreement of over 1/2 Billion to Solyndra was changed to put the taxpayers at the end of the line for any recovery of money during Bankruptcy? Have you seen on the News that the Democrats initially blamed Bush for Solyndra until evidence surfaced that the Bush Administration was lobbied for it by Solyndra but turned it down when investigations showed it was not a viable investment?. How do you know what they have said when the Media sits on any negative information on this Administration?

I agree. How can we trust the democrats, they're the ones that put this miscreant in office. They knew very little about him and believed whatever he put out there. His record was terrible in office he held and yet they still gave him the nomination. I will NEVER VOTE democrat.

"GOP Vision Of Government Would 'Fundamentally Cripple America'"

Except for Ron Paul, who would immediately curtail our military misadventures and ensure less Americans become crippled.

03:57 PM on 09/27/2011
Yes, we DO need this jobs bill. It's like saying we need rain during a time of drought, so obvious even a child can see it. Try and change the subject, talk about anything else you want, but if people don't have jobs they can't take care of their family's basic needs. You don't want people to rely on the government? THEY don't want that either! Good, honest work is good for the body and the soul, and it's good for the country, plain and simple. Our bridges, streets, schools, etc., are falling down, so this jobs bill is truly a no-brainer. No wonder the Republicans are the only ones who don't get it.
10:23 AM on 09/28/2011
