Starkenya Banks Charged With Shaking Her 2-Month-Old Baby To Death

Mother Charged In 2-Month-Old Daughter's Apparent Shaking Death

A Chicago woman has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shaking her 2-month-old daughter to death.

Starkenya Banks, 20, is accused of killing her infant child, Omaria Beckon. Omaria was found unresponsive at Banks' home, in the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard on the city's South Side, on Sept. 22 and pronounced dead the same night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. An autopsy performed the following day was inconclusive, though police said Sunday that the infant appeared to have been shaken.

Banks was ordered held in lieu of a $1 million bail Sunday, when Assistant State’s Attorney William Hall accused the woman of shaking the child "two or three times" to stop her from crying -- before dropping the child onto her apartment's tile floor, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Hall said that Banks has confessed the shaking and dropping her baby, the Sun-Times reports.
