'The Simpsons' To Get Own Channel, Fox Hints

As the hit series "The Simpsons" approaches its 500th episode, executives over at Fox have been toying with the idea of creating a 24-hour channel solely dedicated to America's favorite dysfunctional nuclear family.

Chase Carey, News Corp's chief operating officer, first hinted at the possible scheme at a media conference in L.A. last week, the Los Angeles Times reports.

As the show prepares for its 23rd season, Carey said it has no plans to slow down.

But he didn't stop there. According to Forbes, at another conference in New York later that week, Carey emphasized how the show's unique brand presents a huge opportunity if they are to capitalize on the program's full library.

"The point I was making, which I will reemphasize, is that this is a unique franchise...and it provides us a unique opportunity to do some interesting things with it," he said. "The Simpsons" has been on the air for 23 seasons, yielding a library of programming few series could ever amass.

For those die-hard Simpsons fans out there, don't get too excited. Even if Fox could pull off a channel only devoted to the iconic show, Carey noted that syndication agreements already in place would prevent it from happening in the next 12 months.

In the meantime, you'll just have to watch the season premiere on Sept. 25 at 8pm.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 8 seasons or so of the Simpsons.
(Lisa: Even Gore Vidal has kissed more boys that I have.
Marge: Girls, Lisa. Boys kiss girls.
Cracks me up every time!)
But, 24 hours?! At least, not while it is still rerun in syndication on so many channels. That's just asking for burnout.

Instead of doing something as crazy as this, why not just make the entire 500 episodes into a massive digital collection online and charge a nominal fee for access?

Too sophisticated for the average American.

"don't have a cow, man" "eat my shorts"????? What the hell? This isn't the early 90's. Bart Simpson hasn't said that since 1995. Even "Do'h" is not used anymore.

I thought Fox already had a 24-hour channel with a bunch of cartoon characters - it's called Fox News.

Springfeild Vermont home of the Simpsons. You don't want to know what they did there to get that honor. Sometimes up here people still have too much free time. On the up side they have the road open after the floods.

I'll watch it if they promise to show the first 10 seasons only.

DVD sales declining?

But seriously, that channel would probably be the best thing on tv, about 23 hours out of the day.

This is one time, that i have to say, its a big mistake to make the Simpsons a channel.

I enjoy them all these many years, even the reuns 2-3 times a day. BUT....and I do mean a big BUT...to make them 24/7 will wear out the writers, creators to the point it will turn into crap.

Keep the Simpsons Gold! make the public crave them, and they will continue for another decade.

Make them available every day, every hour...viewrs will get tired real quick, and before you know it, the channel will run reruns of Martha Stewart to fill the channel.

wow, read the article again. 24/7 of re-runs with nearly 500 episodes. That's feasable. nobody said 24/7 NEW simpson episodes. They have a vast library of material. and they want to use it. So there you have it. 24/7 cycle.
