Cowboys Beat Redskins, Tony Romo, Dan Bailey Lead Dallas Over Washington

ARLINGTON, Texas — Tony Romo's ribs held up just fine. So did Dan Bailey's leg.

Romo persevered through pain to lead enough deep drives to set up Bailey for six field goals, including a 40-yarder with 1:57 left to give the Cowboys an 18-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Dallas' Anthony Spencer chopped the ball from Washington's Rex Grossman with 28 seconds left, and linebacker Sean Lee recovered it, setting off a celebration inside Cowboys Stadium.

Dallas coach Jason Garrett dropped to a knee and pumped his fist wildly at being 2-1 – guaranteeing no repeat of last year's miserable 1-7 start. The Cowboys are even tied for first place in the NFC East, along with Washington (2-1), which was seeking its first 3-0 start since 2005.

"This was a great win for us," said Romo, who was 22 of 36 for 255 yards. "It was a hard, hard game. ... We had a million mistakes tonight. We have a lot of young guys, but they were out there for a reason. We'll get it right."

Romo lacked zip and accuracy much of the game, and he had trouble with four snaps from his new center. But he was at his best with the game on the line.

He hit Laurent Robinson for a 25-yard gain to set up Bailey's fifth field goal. He then set up the winner on third-and-21 with a scrambling 30-yarder to Dez Bryant that happened to come against cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who last week said he was hoping "to put my helmet on whatever's hurt."

The Romo-Bailey combination has worked like a charm for two straight games. Against San Francisco a week ago Sunday, Bailey made a tying field goal at the end of regulation, then the winner in overtime.

Bailey is an undrafted rookie who was named the nation's top kicker in college last season, at Oklahoma State. His other kicks Monday night covered 41 (twice), 32, 27 and 23 yards.

The big story, though, was Romo and the other Dallas players who played through pain, such as Bryant, who missed the previous game with a thigh injury, and Felix Jones, who separated a shoulder against the 49ers but ran for a career-high 115 yards and caught three passes for 40 more.

Romo was was sacked once and threw an interception that was more like a punt on a play foiled by one of several bad snaps from Phil Costa. Two shot toward Romo when he wasn't ready for them, two others were quite off-target.

"We're going to get that fixed," Romo said. "It can't happen."

Grossman kept Washington playing with a lead for much of the game, but couldn't put it away.

He was 22 of 37 for 250 yards with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Tim Hightower. He was sacked three times, and threw an interception.

Most of the Redskins' points came from Graham Gano, who made field goals of 50, 46 and 27 yards. Another was blocked after a poor hold.

DeAngelo Hall is the most overrated player in the NFL not named Michael Vick.

I have never been a Cowboy's fan,
but I give Tony Romo a ton of credit.
If my ribs were broken, I would be convalescing and asking caretakers to go fetch. (Nicely. : ) )

What was with the Costa/Romo snaps? I think Romo had not practiced all week. Not sure which one was off. Great Cowboy defence kept giving them more chances.

After Bailey missed that chip shot against San Fran a week ago, I thought "Here we go again." But since then he has been money.
Also, I don't know if it was my lack of faith in Grossman and the Skins to go down the field and score in the last 2:00, but that was the first time in a while that I was actually confident that our defense was going stop them and secure the win. That never happens to me.

Skins thinking that Rex was the answer just got a rude awakening. The REAL Rex Grossman just stood up(well sat down and fumbled) His name is TrainRex

Way to mismanage the two minute drills..Wait he was the answer. I thought that Donovan couldnt run the two minute but Rex could? LOL

Rex is lucky he only had two turnovers and not 3 or 4..two balls could have easily been picked.

When the skins get a REAL quarterback then might be able to take them seriously.

The Redskins didn't draft a Quarterback in the last draft; big mistake. The Redskins need a better offensive line; not fully addressed in the off season. The Redskins were the worst 2 and 0 team in the league yesterday. I've been a Redskins' fan for over 40 years. They stink! They couldn't beat The Cowboys last night despite The Cowboys inability to line up on offensive. They stink! Bad snap, bad hold, and couldn't even kick a field goal. They Stink! The defense, and I blame the defensive coordinator and D. Hall on this one, couldn't even stop The Cowboys on 3rd and 21. They stink! Conclusion: The entire Redskins' organization is clueless, are a disappointment, and they STINK!!!

I'd rather watch The Ravens, who have a smarter owner and general manager, a better coach and a big league Quarterback.

I'm a Cowboys fan living in NYC. There aren't many of us since our team has been bad for most of the past 15 years. Anyway, the Cowboys are very lucky to have won that game. I am surprised that Shanahan took out Hightower for most of the 4th quarter. He was running pretty well against our defense. I also can't believe the four ill-timed snaps by our center.

Why is this team still called "America's Team" as though they're still the dynasty of the 1970s and Tom Landry's still head coach? That title belongs to a team like the Packers or Steelers, who represent the working class, are more recently successful and have worthy owners (the city of Green Bay in the former case). Or the Saints, who recovered from Katrina for God's sake, and won their first Super Bowl five years later, thus exemplifying a good value for Americans and anyone else in the world--not quitting.

I used to be a Cowboys fan, but the Saints are my team now. It's hard to support such a mediocre organization with an owner like Jerry Jones, who is at least little better than Dan Snyder of the Redskins (too bad you can't fire an owner).

I won't go into another of those long-dead sports institutions, Monday Night Football. As for Thanksgiving, at least the Lions have a team this year; I'll definitely be looking forward to Packers-Lions that day.

I used to be a Saints fan, but after katrina when people were shooting at rescue helicopters & they dumped thousands of criminals in Houston & Dallas to loot & pillage my state, well I just can't support a team representing those people.
