Food Pantries Face Unprecedented Demand They Can't Fill

Food Aid

For the third consecutive year, Hunger Action Month has had to contend with a 1 in 6 hunger rate, the highest percentage since such monitoring began in 1995, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

As 49 million Americans struggle to put food on their plates, pantries around the country are grappling with an unprecedented demand—and diversity in clients—that they often can’t afford to accomodate.

"We are seeing many more seniors, but we're also seeing many more families with children,” Doreen Wohl, executive director of the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, told the Huffington Post. “People are coming as a last resort. They've exhausted all other resources.”

WSCH, the largest food pantry in New York City, has seen a 48 percent increase in clients over the past three years and served more than 88,000 meals in July alone.

Enid Borden, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels, has seen a similar swell in clients.

"In this economic downturn, we have found that those very same seniors who were once our volunteers, are now in need of our services," Borden told the Huffington Post. "This is the richest nation on the face of the earth, but the people who raised us and fed us and tilled the soil are going hungry."

The steadily rising cost of food and gasoline prices have placed an enormous strain on many of these programs. This challenge has been exacerbated by recent federal cuts that will slash funding for food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries—nationwide— by 40 percent, the Daily News reported.

Such monetary constraints have forced pantries to slash services and turn some of those in need away.

"We sometimes have to put people on a waiting list,” Borden said. “That is essentially saying to someone who is 85 years old, ‘I'm sorry, but we just can't feed you today.’ How long can someone of that age wait? None of our programs want to put anyone on a waiting list, but there's only so much we can do.”

Though WSCAH has had to scale back on its financial services programs, the nonprofit said its relatively fortunate when it comes to budget cuts. Other programs in New York City have had to reduce their operations to once a week, instead of daily.

To meet the needs of their steadily growing clientele, the pantry is learning to rely increasingly on individual donations and self-promotion, to attract new supporters. The nonprofit has also taken to referring clients to other kitchens around the city, when its resources are limited.

"We have appealed to the individuals who contribute to us for donations and that is our biggest asset,” Wohl noted. Our backup plan is always to reach out increasingly to the high-income community around us. That being said, we are strong advocates of maintaining our federal and state budgets.”

Despite the record-high number of Americans living in poverty, Borden also remains confident in the generosity of supporters and foresees a future without hunger.

"The heart is still there, just the pocketbook isn't,” Borden said. “We may have to beg, borrow, and plead to continue doing the work we do, but we'll keep doing it. Hunger is a disease, but it's a disease we can cure in our lifetime."

I just commented on a post over in Parenting about bullying and the responsibility we all bear in standing up for others who need a champion; then I click over here and...sigh. Looks like my hope that we can teach our kids not to tread on other people, and to speak up when someone else does so, may be ill-founded.

Three years of record hunger, three years of "Hope & Change" government. Anyone see any connection here? Get more people dependent on government freebies. Tax the rich. "Vote for me" and I'll give you more freebies that "the rich" will pay for.

You know, folks, there's a simple tax reform that would free up huge amounts of funding for 501(c)3 non-profits. Take the deduction for charitable giving out of Schedule A, where total deductions have to exceed the standard deduction in order to offer a marginal tax break. Instead, allocate a percentage of charitable deductions DIRECTLY as an offset against tax liability. You'd see a huge groundswell of increased giving, one which potentially could crowd government out of the welfare business altogether. Think about it.

This is bad.

In the comments on the Wall Street protests, some people are saying that the protesters are "fake". But look at how the anger is building up: People lose their jobs; there aren't enough job openings by far; they can't find new jobs, or find only cheap jobs that won't pay the mortgage; Wall Street has screwed around with everybody's money and the economy and suffered virtually NO consequences while the problems get passed on to ordinary people; and then right wingers say things like, "The poor are just lazy," or "The unemployed just don't want to work." Now people are running out of unemployment benefits and the food pantries are running out of food.

If the right wing doesn't start paying attention, there will be he11 to pay soon.

You noticed, its only a matter of time, there are millions and millions of people who are ok, had good jobs, have money, the good life. But they are not noticing millions and millions who are being pushed out and pushed around,A few thousand pushed down is not a major issue but as we approach 75 million people being pushed into a third world lifestyle, America will surly receive some of the protests and demonstration maybe even a civil war or two if people start starving to death in a land of bail outs for the wealthy?

Since the 1986 Amnesty disaster, the 1982 Supreme Court desicion to force our public schools to allow illegal foreigners, our goverrnment has allowed their population to grow, mostly poor, uneducated and low skilled foreigners using and abusing our social; services .
We would probably have enough food and funds to take care of our own less fortunate Americans .
Because of unscrupulous, self serving politicians, who main concern is their own personal and political perservation, we are forced to use our hard earned tax dollars to supplement their living conditions .
It is time for a change in Washington, before we are all on Welfare and Food Stamps .

For every free dollar someone has to pay a dollar into the pot. Simple enough. We all can not be Gov workers and welfare people.

I was just told by someone who has never lied to me, that over in Philly there's a food store that has lines coming out it's doors. Now you'd think if the cops seen that, they'd have to find out what was going on. I was told that people with their food stamp cards go to that store to get cash on the dollar. This is why the food pantry's are running out of food. Not because the government isn't giving them enough. Gezz a family of 3 gets somewhere around $600 a month.

You 'were told that' therefore it must be true. You sound like Michelle Bachman. Someone told her that a vaccine could make a normal girl retarded. Someone told her that the Obama Job program would make him close his business and lay people off.

Can we all agree that 'someone telling you something' is a ludicrous thing to share?

There may or may not be a scarcity of government surplus where food is concerned. If so,why is the price of things so high when demand should be low with the unemployment and food lines.? OF COURSE,FOOD IS HIGH BECAUSE OF THE FOODLINES MAKING FOOD MORE EXPENSIVE FOR THE MAN ON THE STREET.Why didn't I see that as if there is any real lack of food. What is lacking is social justice and social charity.

I am only trying to be sarcastic in the first comment because I belong to the drudges and common folk,I hope.

With taxation a minimum must be had for the State cannot tax anyone beyond what is required for that person's decent existence or that family's decent existence depending on circumstances and conditions. This minimum is immune from taxation and is psychologically and culturally operative. This does not determine the level of taxes however.
What is to be said for the wealthy can be left up to each one's own opinion but a just taxation can be easily determined.See Below:

There are enough Government workers, utility co. workers, sports, music, grocery, gas, airplane.,Oil,bank workers,Retired workers, Retired Military++Coast to coast Along with ceo's., Lawyers, doctors, and + to support rising costs,Why sell cable TV for 12dollars a hook up when you can sell to the haves at 30 dollars to 150 dollars a hook up they do not need all the customers and easy to maintain, the same with gas 4 dollars a gallon you need half as many customers, 2 dollars would bring still huge profits, its call downsizing on the amount of customers needed to make obscene profits with less maintenance costs .Then there is outsourcing and robots. We need welfare so people do not starve since the corporations own and control the land, water and food. Corporate people will starve Citizens to death for profits.

I don't disagree with you.Discretionary spending or excessive wealth is dealt with in the reference above.
There is a just way to tax the wealthy without redistribution of wealth.
Think on this:
400 billion to run the IRS
Funding of federal employees pension plan almost equals SS
Prisons systems are well over 100 billion
I don't know where the money comes from

There is a great injustice by the state or federal government that wastes and overextends itself. Here we have practically no distributive justice or a great abuse of it making it unjust.

There is a just way to tax the wealthy without a redistribution of wealth and this should not occur.Think on this:
400 billion to run the IRS
Funding of federal pensions almost equals SS
At least 100 billion to fund the prison system
I don't know where the money comes from.Thin air.

Distributive justice is absolutely necessary but this is impossible because of government waste, overextension, and corruption.

The Justice system should consist of giant work centers, to pay your debt to society a prisoner should, work on a prison run farm, dairy, clothes factory and many other factories that make necessities for society that could benefit the poor and needy thus relieving a lot of the tax payers burden. Even a do nut and coffee factory for the police and Government workers.

Agree but it still might be very costly to the taxpayer because the materials etc would have to be bought. But lower prices,if good work, for our good might help the deficit. They certainly could be made cheaper.
The powers that be would never allow it.

Notice how gaunt and malnurished all the individuals in the lead picture are? Time to realize there is a difference between getting what you need to eat and getting all you want to eat. Before you donate to food banks, go down and look at the people picking up the free food. It is not a gland problem, it is not being big boned. It is eating too much that makes you fat. Too much in and not enough output. And remember, if it is baby fat, why isn't it on the baby?

Poor people are often overweight because of poor nutrition.

Good, fresh food is expensive. If your budget is low, cheap starch can help fill you up but you don't get enough nutrients. Which means that your energy runs down too soon, and then you want to eat again to pick yourself up. So a lot of empty calories end up passing through your system.

You are in a plastic bubble, People are in need this is no joke millions are fat and sassy but millions are forced into poverty by the fat and sassy, lots of our government workers look fat and our sassy. When you go to a food bank you do not receive stake and vegetables you receive mostly products made of sugar and flower all the things that are cheap and fating canned too. This food keeps people from starvation but tends to make them fat, so they look like they are wealthy but they are not. This added fat also causes health problems and welfare is needed for medical treatment for the fat poor people provided by the wealthy tax payer who outsourced all the jobs with the permission of The GOVERNMENT?

This is sad. I would really like to give to organizations like this, but there is this nagging little feeling that it will go to someone who is residing here illegally and will encourage the problem that our government refuses to fix. People are fed up with it and are paranoid to do anything that might make the problem worse than it already is. I would also like to donate food to starving countries except more often than not it is confiscated by people other than who it was intended for or there are no logistics to deliver it to the needy and it ends up rotting where it was unloaded. Can anyone please name a charity that can do the job effectively? I would like to know.

There is no charity that can promise you that the food will not go to starving Illegal children. Maybe we can get some type of Cheek test and rub the inside of starving children's mouths or their parents. Or maybe we can make them recite the Gettysburg Address. If we find one single illegal, hand them a towel to stop their droolling and throw them out on the street. Is that effective enough for you?
