Glenn Greenwald Fends Off Possum In Brazil (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/27/11 12:37 PM ET Updated: 11/27/11 05:12 AM ET

As we all know, Glenn Greenwald leads a life with many facets: he is part no-holds-barred blogger, part family man, Brazilian resident and lover of dogs. The second half was in evidence on Monday night and Tuesday morning, as Greenwald turned to Twitter to assist him in a perilous mission: dealing with a wild creature (most likely a possum) that had gotten into his pantry.

Greenwald uploaded a video to YouTube, showing him cautiously approaching the beast (which had black fur and was making a low, rumbling growl of a noise) before fleeing his pantry. "Does anyone happen to know what this bizarre creature is- just found in our pantry- & how one can encourage it to exit?" he tweeted.

His followers told him it was a possum, and advised him to leave a trail of cat food going from the pantry to the outside. Greenwald followed their advice and voila!

"[The cat food] & the creature are gone," he tweeted on Tuesday. Crisis averted!

Not to nitpick, but it's "opossum." I guess "'possum" is acceptable. I've faced one down before. They are unpleasant in the wild and not as prone to playing dead as you would think. Actually, they excrete a foul smelling substance when they do that, so it's undesirable for this to happen indoors.

OK, I've seen regular opossums before, and that's not one. That is a HELL-POSSUM. I'm glad Glenn and his guy and their doggies are OK.

As long as he's dealing with his opossum problem he won't be going after the president.

Maybe he should have checked with Jane Hamsher- she could have asked her buddy Grover.

He "goes after" Obama with well-reasoned, factually supported arguments. What should he be, a flack?

You seem to have a problem with progressives being disappointed in Obama. We're here, and you can't bully us into silence.

I live in the OC and we have quite a few of these creatures ... they are ugly as sin, and they smell pretty nasty too.

Possums get such a bad rap. They are really quite fascinating. My neighbor rescued a baby possum and it is now a pet. It has beautiful fur, is very sweet and it gets along just fine with her cats.

Can't stand that creature. The opossum looks scary too though.

This is serious. I would consider moving.

I'll tell you how I catch opossums. I have a lot where it is important that opossums are kept out, so what I do is have a good dog who corners the critters first. Then when they are penned in or playing dead, I pick them up by the prehensile tail and put them into a cage. The next day I take them to the river nearby and liberate them. They don't return and they are in good opossum habitat instead of being downtown and in a neighborhood where someone might kill them. Catching them by the tail is a skill and not to be tried at home. There are times when I have to drop them if they climb back up their tail towards my hand. Around here some people have been known to eat them while others swear they make good pets. I am really not interested in either.

I've caught one in a live capture trap before. I thought he was dead, but he came alive 2/3 of the way to his new home. Also, I've read that they are solitary, so you might want to mix up the locations where you drop them off.

I'd eat one just to see what it tasted like, but my redneckism only extends so far -- I'm absolutely not interested in gutting, skinning and cleaning such an animal. So until I find a place with opossum on the menu...

Yes, most of the time they are solitary except when Mom has her litter of which there may be many. I've had to catch whole families at at time; mother and her half grown babies and move them off to the same place. And you may encounter more than one at time at their 'feeding grounds'. And ususally, they are pugnacious and therefore care is needed in catching them. Leaving them alone if you can is the best policy. And they can carry bacteria as they do search out perishable foodstuffs.

"Family man" can't you say that he lives in Brazil with his gay partner who cannot live here because of homophobic immigration laws..What is this the 50's?

Yes, to the mainstream media, which Huffie Post has become, yes it is somewhere around 1956.

And add that Brazil has no such antiquarian problems with gay couples and immigration, benefits etc, although we all know that there is liberty and equality for all in the rights-revering USA.

I'd never have taken it for a possum.. Aren't they supposed to pull a faint and pretend they're dead to protect themselves? That creature sounded like it fed on human flesh.
