Hallmark Launches Line Of Job Loss Cards (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/27/11 10:58 AM ET   Updated: 11/27/11 05:12 AM ET

"Don't think of it as losing your job, think of it as a time-out between stupid bosses."

That's just one of the many comforting sentiments that that consumers can find in Hallmark's line of greeting cards for those who've recently lost their job. NPR reports that the demand for unemployment-related cards was so high, Hallmark decided to release a whole new line of cards geared towards victims of job cuts. And with an unemployment rate that has sat above 8 percent for over two and a half years now, it might be about time.

The idea is to provide a little comfort and empathy in an otherwise demoralizing and stressful situation, according to Hallmark Creative Director Derek McCracken.

"People in times of need will always need to connect," McCracken told NPR, "and when the consumers have asked us for a way to connect in those difficult situations, we try to respond in an authentic way and we think that's what the greeting card does."

The cards -- including one featuring a cat that reads "Is there anywhere I could hack up a hairball, like say, on a former employer's head?" -- have reportedly been selling well, but how effective they are in battling job market uncertainty in an environment that includes mass layoffs remains to be seen. Bank of America announced it would cut 35,000 jobs earlier this month and companies such as Borders and Cisco Systems Inc have already made big cuts this year.

David Samson, a 25-year-old layoff victim isn't convinced that cards will ease the pain of losing a job.

"It's thoughtful," he told The Detroit News, "but I think you have to have a healthy sense of humor to appreciate [it]."

Others, like Indiana staffing employee Michelle Crowthers-Lunczynski, say the cards are a small gesture that can go a long way.

"Getting a card like that and somebody caring is fabulous," she told St. Louis's WTHR. "The crazy part to think about this is there's so many people laid off. At least someone's caring enough to you know, get a card and say, 'I'm thinking of you'."

Here are seven of Hallmark's job loss greeting cards:

If I lost my job, and someone gave me a card.... tell them I would have preferred the $4 they spent on 10¢ worth of paper.

How iconic that a huge corporation like Hallmark wants to profit from someone’s job loss.

well they already benefit from the loss of health and life through their line of get well and bereavement cards, so why not?

I can just see it now. Somebody already un-hinged mentally gets one of these tasteless tacky lost-your-job greeting cards in the mail, and then a few days later visits their ex-employer with an AK-47 and an 'xmas hit list' if you get my drift. Sheesh!

That can help for sure. But maybe getting jobs for the nation would do better. Come on people, can you spend seven words and say the following? "Let's call for a National Hiring Day. Supporting a country wide jobs fair would pull the country out of this mess.

National Hiring Day - This is a day that corporations are encouraged to hire new employees. Corporations are called on to put patriotism first and help their country in
hard times. Those corporations that cannot hire, are asked to stop firing for that month.
http://wp.me/p5S9X-nv

1. If companies can send thousands of jobs overseas, they can hire one American on National Hiring Day.
2. If companies can get millions in tax breaks and subsidies from the government, they can help it in return by hiring one American on National Hiring Day.
3. With companies sitting on all time high profits, they can hire one person on National Hiring Day - which by the way, would help them in return.

Let's say you run a business, by hiring one person, you are a part of this. Many others hire one or more. Then because you (and others) hired one or more, thousands have gotten jobs, lost insecurity and worry, and are ready to buy from you and others. AND they have a good reason to support your company. Just one hire from enough businesses and the whole country has a big boost. You help a little - get good will in return.

Capitalism failed in 2007 because the banks were under regulated. less than 20 years after the fall of the USSR.

Now we are hitching rides to the space station from the russians.

Dang. Who says all those rich folks aren't job creators? Hallmark EMPLOYED someone to design those cards, by cracky!

I'm not sure my Greeting Card clients (http://www.charitycards.com) would appreciate this sort of thing. Granted, most of my clients are businesses, sending someone a 'Job Loss' card might be rubbing salt in the wound.

Live gave him a lemon. A really BIG lemon. She started to make lemonade, but then she thought, "what the heck", and made a COMBUSTIBLE lemon instead.

I stopped buying Hallmark cards a while back - too dang expensive when you can find something that says what you want to say for a lot less. This addition to their line just kinda makes me thankful for my decision. Loss of job cards are TACKY and I'm sure unwelcome to most.

This might turn into a boost in get well card sales for all of the people who will get their lights punched out by the recipients of the layoff cards. A win-win for Hallmark!

If I was out of a job I would rather my friends spend money on some groceries for my family instead of on a lame card.

Are the cards made in China?

I'd prefer a cheap bottle of wine over a Hallmark card.
