Robert Dold: Stimulus Funding Is Wasteful, Except When It's Not

Robert Dold

First Posted: 09/27/11 12:43 PM ET Updated: 11/27/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- An ardent opponent of the federal stimulus plan showed up Monday in Winnetka, Ill., to smile and cut the ribbon at a ceremony unveiling a local project funded by that very stimulus.

"Originally built in the 1940s, the [train] station not only got a facelift but three heated platform warming shelters, two new elevators and a new pedestrian bridge to allow commuters to wait in the station and then quickly cross over the tracks to the Chicago-bound platform," Winnetka-Glencoe Patch reported Tuesday morning.

A $4.9 million renovation courtesy of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 arrived at Winnetka’s historic Elm Street train station Monday with a restoration of much of the original woodwork and modern elevators from the station to the platform.

Village President Jessica Tucker joined the festivities alongside Rep. Robert Dold (R-Ill.), state Rep. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston), state Rep. Robyn Gable (D-Evanston), Metra board member and Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder and other dignitaries among the crowd of more than 40 people.

The stimulus was opposed by every House Republican and all but three Senate Republicans, yet Dold is just one of scores of Republicans who've celebrated funding at home while opposing it in Washington. Dold was not in Congress when the ARRA was passed, but told Patch in 2010 during his campaign that he would have opposed it.

"I myself think that what's going on right now is our out-of-control spending is just that -- out of control," he said. "We need to make sure we're not raising taxes. We need to focus on how to get people back to work. In the 10th [of] this $862 billion stimulus package, we spent $169 million in the 10th District, ... and we've created 158 jobs. That is a dismal failure. We need to be pro-growth and pro-jobs strategies out there."

The stimulus is often discussed only in terms of the number of jobs that were created, but the money also left behind infrastructure improvements such as the renovation in Winnetka. At the unveiling of the refurbished Elm Street project, Dold told the crowd, according to Patch, that "this is an infrastructure project we can be proud of."

During a June speech at the Illinois Policy Institute, Dold lambasted stimulus spending in Illinois as inefficient and wasteful.

Shortly after being sworn in, Dold also cosponsored legislation rescinding any unspent stimulus money.

It's called hypocrisy, and the problem is with career politicians. Part of the problem, is that, likely, you, whoever is reading this, keep voting for the people in the two major parties. Stop that...!!!

Really??? Robert Dold is under estimating his constituents AGAIN. I know of more than 158 stimulus jobs created in the 10th district. Your misinformation is what's "pathetic". Does your local staff even research facts for you or do you shoot from the uh---- hip like Michelle Bachmann?

If you are going to have the Federal Government spend all our tax dollars anyway, you might as well try to get some of it back for your State. I wonder how many people will use this fancy train station or is it another example of Bike trail, Dog Park, or Frisbee Golf ...fluff?

And how many people did it put to work? Probably not considered fluff by those who were able to feed their families because of it.

How about putting them to work building houses for the homeless? Or maybe fixing up neighborhoods? Nope, the City no doubt needed that fancy Train Station to overlook some park they just installed so the Mayor can win the "City of the year award".

This is really a poor perspective.

You can always take a society's resources, and put it behind something, anything, that will employ a select few, and I would argue, arbitrarily, employ them under the banner of economic stimulus.

Or you can spend money in such a way that, once the money is invested, it can generate money on its own, and create growth, and jobs, while never needing government money again, but that requires politicians to think about what's best for their districts, often times at odds with their reelection efforts.

So what is a good solution? Well, let's start by expecting officeholders to serve a term and then get the hell out. After all, we trust the results of civil and criminal trials to a jury of citizens. Shouldn't our government be ran by citizens too?

I am certain you can point out to use where the huge amounts of money were spent on bike trails, dog parks, or frisbee golf courses right? Oh, right, I guess you really can't.

Actually, if you're against something, and vote against it, or are just dead set against it (like this guy was/is), then no, DON'T take the money for your State. If you're really set in your beliefs, prove it out. Turn down the money and the jobs, and the good things that the Federal Government can do for you.

Others are $5,000 to $50,000 per mile. That doesn't add up the maintenance. So, Oh right, I guess I really can. All in about the 2 minutes you could have Googled it.

The rest of your post is less arrogant and I agree that some leaders could set an example and not take the funds. Rick Scott did that. People just seem to think Government is Santa Claus.

Looks, talks and acts just like his predecessor, Mark Kirk. His district includes some very needy communities, but you'd never know it by his voting record.

Bob is an intelligent man, but in a narrow sense.

I once overheard him claim Obama was a Socialist. When I asked him, he didn't know the difference between Communism and Socialism. Couldn't point out why most Socialist countries in Europe are so stable, or why capitalism thrives in these countries too.

Just got a blank look.

Sure Europe can do well leaving the United States to do the expensive heavy lifting of keeping the peace globally. Perhaps we should end our protection for them and let them all speak German, or Farsi.

A: The United States is in 2 1/2 wars currently. "Keeping the Peace" has taken on a whole new meaning these days.

B: We never sent troops to defend Norway against the Germans in WWII. THEY sent troops to France to join us, however.

C: What does the 1940s or our current NATO committment to Europe have anything to do with their current economic model, their current success with capitalism, healthcare or employment % (higher taxes aside)?

You seem to infer that without the US military abroad, other countries would somehow implode and become reichs or caliphates. Have fun with that premise.

Something the article seemed to gloss over was his opposition not to the stimulus itself, but to how wasteful it could be. In my opinion this embodies his true opinion, not HP's spin on his opinion:
"We need to focus on how to get people back to work. In the 10th [of] this $862 billion stimulus package, we spent $169 million in the 10th District, ... and we've created 158 jobs. That is a dismal failure. We need to be pro-growth and pro-jobs strategies out there." - From article.
ALSO: "During a June speech at the Illinois Policy Institute, Dold lambasted stimulus spending in Illinois as inefficient and wasteful."
Clearly his opposition to the stimulus is based on his belief that it was wasteful, which it appears to have been. Creating 158 jobs to the tune of $169 million?! Wow, I'm not sure how that can be defended. Yes I understand one of the goals of recovery act was also to make improvements, but it was sold as being a way to create jobs. Give me a million and I can create one job too.

He's on the record opposing the Stimulus long before it was signed into law or a $ was spent. Yet there he is smiling and taking credit for a portion of it in his district.

Paint it whatever way you like.

Not all of that money goes to hiring people.
There are materials to buy, the bricks and mortar, and some of the materials are highly technical in nature, i.e., expensive.

I see your passion against waste---but like other conservatives, do you also oppose any cuts to defense, which has proven to be very wasteful?
10:55 AM on 09/28/2011
Yeah, sort of like their hypocritical stand on "all life is sacred" for the fetus - but, meh, not so much for the prisoner or the poor schmuck who is dying and has no health insurance. Then life is pretty expendable.

Stimulus spending is wasteful; unless it’s for my district.

And it's money well spent when used for keeping his wealthy Republican constituents happy; Winnetka is one of the most affluent suburbs in the nation.
