White House: No Troy Davis Call By President Obama, Despite Blogger's Claim (UPDATE)

Obama And Troy Davis

First Posted: 09/27/11 06:40 PM ET Updated: 11/27/11 05:12 AM ET

A radio host and blogger who claimed that President Barack Obama made a last-ditch effort to save Death Row inmate Troy Davis on the eve of his execution last week in Georgia has since retracted parts of his story, as White House officials came out today to refute the claims.

UPDATE 6:15 p.m.: Rob Redding Jr., the blogger, sent The Huffington Post's Black Voices the following statement, standing by his reporting:

Redding News Review was asked to add a line to its story, because some members of the press were trying to "spin" the report. Our source told us, that the "press" had started saying that Obama would not help a white man on death row. We added a line about the president himself not making calls about Davis to clear up any confusion. In the Politico report, even April D Ryan says that the death penalty was mentioned at the meeting. She is clearly not the source of our story. We stand by the story, as posted on our websites.

Previously:
The radio host, Rob Redding Jr., wrote on The Redding News Review yesterday that two sources confirmed that the Obama White House spent "three days" looking at ways it could legally get involved in the case and even called state officials to urge clemency.

"The Obama administration even called the state of Georgia about getting involved and were told 'No,'" Redding wrote.

The story continued:

"We looked at every possible avenue legally," Redding's alleged source reported Obama as saying. "There was not one there." And, "It was a state case and I could not intervene because it wasn't federal," Redding's other unidentified source attributed to Obama, according to Redding's published article.

But about 3 p.m. on Tuesday his story carried an update: "The source said the president never called and was only concerned about an injustice, as he would do for any American."

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer told Politico that the report was completely untrue. According to Politico, a number of black radio hosts attended an off-the-record meeting with the president, and that while Obama was pressed on the Davis issue, he told the group that his hands were tied.

"That article was completely, 100 percent wrong," American Urban Radio Networks radio host April Ryan told Politico. Obama, she told the website, was "unequivocal" that there was "nothing he could do" in the case, adding that Obama did tell the group that in general, he had concerns about innocent death row inmates.

I'm glad the president didn't step in. The case is already controversial and the president doesn't need to waste political capital on an issue that really isn't his to begin with.

Roy Davis can NEVER kill again. The Death Penalty works because history has shown that an executed murderer has never come back from the dead to murder again!

Why does this site have Black, Latino, and Gay voices? Liberals love to DIVIDE us.
10:55 AM on 10/02/2011
That is only one goal of the death penalty. The other is to scare others to not commit crimes and so your argument is only half correct. In some cases a person may think but in most they do not so please get your fact straight.
11:34 AM on 10/02/2011
Ok fair enough. You say that "in SOME cases it makes a person THINK but in MOST they don't". Ok so if we got RID of the death penalty would them NON-thinkers think? I would guess not.

i don't plan on being on no table, homie. mr davis put himself in a bad situation. i aint giving this crappy justice system nothing to work with. mr davis got caught trippin and paid the ultimate price. life goes on. there's a crisis in this country called black on black crime. let's focus on that instead of criminals who get caught up in the system.
11:35 AM on 10/02/2011
Neither did the countless others who were murdered at the hands of the state.... Because you are not doing anything does not mean in America that you are innocent. As Malcolm X once said "If you are Black you were born in jail" Oh and by the way Malcolm was black ya know? He was murdered by another black man to keep the status quo within The Nation of Islam much like what you are literally doing to people like me when it comes to telling the obvious truth when it comes to Obama and his policy of denying that we even exist let alone trying to save ONE innocent life, Can't you see ain't nothing changed???
Are you telling me a man who declared his innocence up to the day he was strapped to a table on false evidence that you sir you are willing to look the other way??? Sir you may as well have been their helping them stick the needle in Mr. Davis because you are not as we say "Down with us".
07:13 PM on 10/05/2011
You asked if i were willing to look the other way while mr davis was being executed. well you quoted the great malcolm x, now let me quote the mortal anthony anderson, "look away, look away." we aint talkin about a little black fellow in montana. mr davis lived in savanah ga. there's plenty of black folks around there to support him without the president intervening. mr davis been on death row for 10 years. where's all the progressive negroes in atlanta. where's all the black preachers in the south. where's all the black professors from all those black colleges around there. the president absolutely did the right thing by not getting involved in that mess. stop yo damn crying.

Murderers don't defend human life they take it. LOL!!! You guys don't think that this guy is any different than the last guy do ya????? Stevie Wonder could see that! When he speaks don't listen with both ears listen with a third ear. Just close your eyes and listen with an open mind. Come-on you can do it!!! I dare ya to listen to his reinstatement of the patriots act, his talking down to us like we are children, his support for the right-wing agenda.... Black people are masters of reading between the lines, now what do you hear??? Ugly ain't it???
08:15 PM on 10/01/2011
i hear a black fool named tommy perkins

Not really, you are doing what has been done for years when the truth is spoken. Attack the messenger. I'm not religious is in anyway. But I do much of the philosophy and some of the stories in the bible. I think many people attacked Jesus when he told thel the truth and so it seems the fruit don't fall far from the tree and like those people of that time period some of you still have a hard head.
Obama is in fact the second coming of George Bush! He along with the other democrats pretended that they could not pass anything when he had both houses and now he wants sympathy when their is a Republican majority in congress???? I don't think so!!!
Both parties drink from the same corporate watering hole. And if you even think this guy is going to stop the drugs from coming into the hood or bring jobs to your doorstep the way he has done for the white community you sir are sick and in need of a doctor very badly.
As I have said Stevie Wonder can see through this guy and I might add in his sleep!
We are only going to get one shot at making our lives better and what did we get?
A cheap shot!!!
Like Malcolm said judge a man by his deeds.....

Three of the lead stories in Black Voices are about crime - a murderer, some guy convicted of identity theft, and a sports star who's also a coke head.

Talk about reinforcing stereotypes, you may want to give some thought to adding some black success stories and get out of that mosh pit that the black community seems so fond of. Be upbeat, this part of HuffPost is just SO negative.

Faved. Ignorance is bliss, isn't it?

What you fail to understand is that we are not supposed to be involved in an internal situation. And bombing does not serve to make the world a better place, it only serves to make others around the globe angry at the United States.

Waa Waa Waa. That's all I hear from us. Black people are killing black all day and night in the streets but we spend all our energy crying about a deathrow inmate. There are way more important issues for us and Pres. Obama to be focused on. I am so glad he did not even comment on this. He has learned to not get involved in every issue that is brought to him.

I am glad the President DID NOT intervene.....The Supreme Court should have DONE its job. Had Obama done otherwise, it WOULD HAVE BEEN USED AGAINST him (heck, he has been blamed for a host of things that are beyond his control.)
(And yes, I include the economy. All he can do according to Article II is just what he has done....If you have a problem with the economy take a look at the Congress (Article I).)

Yes. I'm sure we can look forward to a slew of stories of this type leading up to the 2012 election. Bombard the public with inaccurate stories and outright lies to influence the election and undermine the President. Granted, his approval rating speaks to our current reality in that people can be easily swayed as support for Obama wanes, and every avenue will be used to bring him down. We have to do what we can to counter the stories of this kind that are sure to come.

Maybe because he was guilty and they knew it.
06:49 AM on 09/29/2011
I don't think you understand the implications of the case. The point has ALWAYS been (or rather it is supposed to be) DID the government PROVE the case beyond a reasonable doubt. I am not one for letting guilt people go free, but I am against government NOT PROVING its CASE.

If you remember (google it if you have to), President Obama was giving a press conference on the HRC bill. The entire press conference was to be focused on the Health Care debate. The last question of the press conference was asked by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Tribune, in which she asked the President his opinion on the situation in Cambridge btw Prof Gates and Officer Crowley. And unfortunately, that was the only thing the MSM remembered and reported on regarding the press conference. Which again was a press conference arrange by the White House to answer questions regarding HCR. I hoped that answered your 'Hmmmmmmm" question. Stop with the knee jerk reaction and get informed.

A person with a moral conscience would certainly involve himself in the case of a person's life about to be stolen from him by his own government. One reason one should run for the presidency should be to take action in moments such as this one.

Absolutely agree.

While I can understand for strictly political reasons why the President didn't want to get involved, showing leadership by defending civil liberties--i.e., principle, not politics--is something a POTUS ought to do.
