Google Search Feature Determines The Sexuality Of (Most) Celebrities

Google Gaydar

First Posted: 09/28/11 03:00 PM ET Updated: 11/28/11 05:12 AM ET

Can Google get much gayer? They're already in hot water with former U.S. Sen. and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum for refusing to sever his name from a filthy sexual term that sex columnist and gay activist Dan Savage created especially for him in honor of Santorum's anti-gay rhetoric.

And earlier this year the Google search page went rainbow in honor of Pride month (though some LGBT people felt the rainbow wasn't prominent enough).

But a new feature that allows users to learn the sexuality of celebrities based on a synthesizing of articles found by the search engine takes things to a new level.

Using Google's gaydar is easy. You just type "is [name of suspected celebrity here] gay (or bi or straight)?" into the search box and Google will its "best guess" based on all of the available information (in the form of relevant websites) and present its findings. While it seems to work for many straight and out celebrities, controversial celebrities who have been accused of hiding in the closet don't seem to be fair game for the company's A.I. gaydar.

But who cares? We don't need a computer to tell us which leading men and women are engaging in same-sex loving -- we've got our own perfectly tuned human gaydar for that.

My Google doesn't do this. Tried several celebs on multiple browsers, signed into Google and not. Nothing.

RIP (or DOA?)

As of 9 PM CDT Thursday, it looks like Google has dropped this feature. None of the searches I tried earlier produce any "Google Gaydar" results.

None of these even seem to work in Google. Did they disable it or something?

Says Barney Franck is, and Lindsay Lohan is bi, but is silent on Rick Perry, Rand Paul and Rick Santorum.

"Can Google get much gayer?" Can the author of this article be more offensive?

I have tried this feature. It does not work. For instance, Tom Cruise is a very famous celebrity, mentioned on many webpages, yet when I do a Google search on "is tom cruise gay", it doesn't know the answer. The number of celebrities where it lists a result at all us very small. I have found results for just a small percentage of queries on Google: "is rosie o'donnell gay", "is lindsay lohan gay", "is michael jackson gay", "is marcus bachmann gay", "is ellen degeneres gay", "is barney frank gay", "is rachel maddow gay", "is ricky martin gay", "is neil patrick harris gay", "is oprah winfrey gay"... but for MOST celebrities it doesn't say anything at all. If you search on something like "is anderson cooper gay" or "is rick perry gay" or "is george w. bush gay" or "is barack obama gay" or "is adolf hitler gay" or "is larry craig gay" or "is lady gaga gay" or "is richard simmons gay" or "is daniel tosh gay" or "is mark foley gay" or "is angelina jolie gay" or "is eminem gay" you don't get an answer from Google. I think their algorithm is busted. It only gives an answer a small percentage of the time.

Google knows about Tom. It just doesn't need the legal trouble.

LOL it didn't have an answer for Richard Simmons??

To be fair, though, this is the stupidest use for Google I've seen yet...the only logical need to Google a person's sexuality is if you could possibly date them, and sorry ladies....Tom Cruise is never gonna happen.

Do you really need to know about Richard Simmons his sexual preference?

That is one queen who has been an open secret for 80 years, kinda like Liberace do you really think they are gay?

Anyone who has to Google Richard Simmons to find out if he's gay has other issues.
