Obama Addresses Hispanic Community Issues, Immigration Reform Dominates (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/28/11 11:12 PM ET Updated: 11/28/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said today that the Hispanic community can continue to count on him as the strongest of advocates for comprehensive immigration reform but that it doesn’t depend solely on him, and added that it doesn’t help the debate “by perpetuating the notion that somehow, by myself, I can go and do these things."

Obama also said that he is sure that “within my lifetime we will have a Latino candidate for President who is very competitive and may win.” He urged the Hispanic community to match their growth in numbers with votes, because by increasing their participation at the polls “both parties will respond to the demands of Latinos.”

During a “virtual roundtable” at the White House, at which AOL Latino/Huffington Post Latino Voices, Yahoo and MSN Latino participated, the president answered direct questions from readers on topics of interest to the Latino community: immigration reform, unemployment, health care, Social Security, diplomatic relations with Mexico, the crisis in drug and weapons trafficking, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the power of the Latino vote, and even the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

The immigration questions, of course, dominated the conversation. The president reiterated his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform, a campaign promise he made in 2008 but still has yet to fulfill. He also repeated the argument that, unlike past years, Democrats cannot count on any Republican support for reform. Even the DREAM Act, which would provide legal status to undocumented youth, has not gained the support of a single Republican this year—not even Republicans who sponsored the bill in the past.

Besides, he said, “to change the laws” a bill would have to pass “a House controlled by Republicans and you need 60 votes in the Senate,” an argument that led some critics to point out that during the first two years of his term both chambers were under Democratic control. That said, it is true that some Republican votes have always been needed to compensate for the conservative Democrats who are opposed to immigration reform.

While Obama remained calm at all times, perhaps the only time he got expressive was when Cesar, a young law student from New York, asked the president why he hadn’t done more to pass the DREAM Act, "Mr. President, I am an undocumented law graduate from New York City. I’m just writing to say that your message that you do not have a dance partner is not a message of hope. A real dancer goes out on the dance floor and picks out his or her dance partner. You’re just waiting. You have the facts, numbers, dollars and votes on the side of granting administrative relief for DREAMers. We are doing our part. It is time to do yours, Mr. President."

“I just have to continue to say this notion that somehow I can just change the laws unilaterally is just not true,” Obama declared. “And I think there’s been a great disservice done to the cause of getting the DREAM Act passed and getting comprehensive immigration passed by perpetuating the notion that somehow, by myself, I can go and do these things. It’s just not true.”

“We live in a democracy,” he added, and reminded the audience that Congress is responsible for passing laws for him to sign. “We have to recognize how the system works.” He did, however, add that “nobody will be a stronger advocate for making that happen than me.”

Gabriel Lerner, editor of AOL Latino and Latino Voices Huff Post, asked the president about the record number of deportations under his administration, and the fact that he has not solely targeted immigrants with criminal records.

Obama said that “the statistics are actually a little deceptive" because "we’ve been apprehending folks at the borders and sending them back." Those, he said, “count as deportations.”

But Obama defended the changes his administration has made to deportation priorities, concentrating on serious criminals rather than on DREAMers, for example.

However, in the past few days several people have complained that despite the changes, many people who are not supposed to be “priorities” for deportation continue to get deported. Last week, one of the leaders of the national DREAM Act movement, Matías Ramos, announced that ICE had removed the electronic ankle bracelet they had forced him to wear for the past week.

Another question, on the importance of the Latino community to the political fabric of the nation, referred to rumors that Republicans are considering naming Hispanic Florida Senator Marco Rubio as their vicepresidential nominee in the upcoming election. Obama very deliberately and astutely did not refer to Rubio or any other Republican by name, and instead talked about the importance of Latinos to reflect the magnitude of their population size by registering and voting.

On this, Obama speaks from experience. The growth in the number of Latinos who registered and voted in the 2008 elections contributed to Obama’s wins in key states, and he took the White House with 67% of the Latino vote.

This support has eroded due to discontent among some Latinos with unemployment and Obama’s failure to pass immigration reform

Obama has begun a tour of key states in the 2012 election that have strong Hispanic presences, in the hopes of reconnecting with these voters—who he will need in order to get reelected in 2012.

Today’s forum, while ostensibly in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, offered the president the opportunity to continue the process of reconnecting with this crucial voting bloc.

I am illegal in the US. I live at 140 West 2nd Street Clifton, NJ 07011. My brother Armando Chan naturalized American citizens gave me a fake US Passport to enter the county. I've living here for over 20 yrs. I think I have proven myself and should be given a chance to be legal.3

BTW Huffpo.........Where's the Black page, the White page, the Jew page.....Why do illegal immigrants and their supports deserve press over citizens.
09:26 PM on 09/29/2011
The solution: Close the borders then let every illegal alien who wants to remain in the USA pay an "entrance fee" ( $10,000 or more ). That should help reduce the deficit. They can be issued temporary work permits until the fee is paid. There must be at least one working member in each family. Only after the fee is paid can they be able to recieve social benefits, free medical care, education, housing etc. They should be liable for all taxes and civil duties as the regular citizens. They must apply for full citizen ship after paying the "fee " . Non-compliance would lead to deportation.

Why do we have to import all these aliens to the USA? Their home countries are beautiful and unspoiled. We should be exporting American democacy, law and order and entrepenuership to these countries. They should be inviting Americans with the know-how and skills to improve their home lands. America is like a boat that is tipping over with too many passengers. When it overturns we all drown. JFK had the Peace Corps. Obama wants them here as his voters.

interesting to see that, many people want to legalize the abortion, the marijuana and many other (convenient things) but are totally opposed about legalizing people that might be living in this country for over a decade, being productive and paying their dues. Illegal is something that, is not legal yet, for some reason, the media need to ask Mr Bush the reasons why he thought that an immigration reform was needed and that was several years ago. It's unbelievable to see that hundred of politicians didn't have the time, opportunity and interest to address this issue until today.

Why don't you enforce our current laws? Truman deported more than 2,000,000 illegals after WWII to make sure returning vets had jobs..... Eisenhower ordered 1.3 millions deported in 1954, Hoover had hundreds of thousands deports during the great depression to GIVE AMERICAN JOBS TO AMERICANS

Don't reward criminal behavior while punishing law abiding AMERICANS like me with more taxes to support criminals

No he is not. He has reduced border patrol. He has issued an executive order giving defacto amnesty to many who have already been apprehended. Obams is circumventing our laws by refusing to enforce them.

That is all he is doing is looking for votes. " The president reiterated his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform, a campaign promise he made in 2008 but still has yet to fulfill."
That should tell the whole story. He is a do nothing president. If you can't lead, leave. If you want to do something for your country, leave. Let another Democrat run. You have not fulfilled your promises. You have great speech's. That is all you have. Leave. For the good of this country you must leave. You can not get anything done. Stop blaming the Republicans. If you were a better President, the Republicans would give some ground. Picture this President trying to lead a group of soldiers into battle. Not many would want to follow.

Vote for the right candidate WHOMEVER it may be and whatever his election chances may be, and forget about the candidate's electability. In short, vote your conscience and let chips fall where they may. My only regret is that in 2008 I didn't vote for Cynthia McKinney instead of this skunk.

Dont tell that to the Cuban exiles in Florida. The first Spanish- American president will be a Republican, named Marco Rubio. And all Americans will be proud of him. He knows and appreciates the value of the ideals that the Founding Fathers instilled in our Constituion. He will be the uniter that Obama pretended he would be. Hispanics of every type come from very advanced civilizations. Family, religion, culture are very important to them. Obama wants only the ignorant and easily persuadable minorities for his supporters.

There is an ancient fable by AEsop about a farmer and his golden goose.

The farmer found himself in some financial problems and just as things were getting tough he found one goose that was laying a golden egg. The goose would lay an egg about once a day, sometimes one every other day, depending on how much and the quality food he got, or whether he was harassed by the dogs. The dogs were Republicans.

At first the farmer was quite happy, he had some monies to pay creditors. But soon his bills were mounting quickly, but the goose was laying at a slower pace. The farmer grew frustrated: "why can't my goose lay 2 eggs a day"?. He threatened to kill the goose, but that just made things worse. The farmer's wife asked him to be patient, but his bills were getting higher and higher.

So one day the farmer killed the slow golden goose because he thought he would be able to get several golden eggs to pay off his bills. But to his surprise there was no fully formed egg in the belly of the goose. The farmer tried to sew up the goose but she did not survive.

The farmer lost his only source of help because of his impatience.

I doubt that anyone in Obama administration has the intellectual ability to grasp the metaphor of Aesop's fable. It's over their heads. Too complex, too brain-engaging, too media-unready.

Actually, it says more about the intellectual capacity of Republicans...LOL! especially if you think it's so "brain-engaging." Realize that fables are just glorified anaolgies in order to get a point across. I truly feel sorry for you. Next.

The problem the farmer had was he depended on someone else. He was looking for someone else to take care of him. The reason why the chicken crossed the road was to get away from that farmer. Imagine a couple golden eggs today. I am off to the local mall to get me some of those geese.

Watching the president sitting down with members of the Latino community discussing ILLEGAL aliens, the Dream Act and prosperity for Hispanic’s, is a far cry from the speech the president gave to the Congressional Black Caucus and the African American crowd the other day. Not one time during this sit down immigration conference with the president did I see or hear the president say that Hispanics and ILLEGAL aliens need to take off their slippers, put on the marching shoes, stop crying and complaining about ILLEGAL immigration and do something to get “amnesty” back on the table. Not one iota of condescension towards ILLEGAL aliens or their sympathizers. It’s funny, because the president is out there pushing for “amnesty” alone. I have not seen many Democrats on the stump for ILLEGAL aliens because it’s a political liability to support a cause Americans vehemently disagree with. Look at what’s happened to Perry because of the issue. If this issue is going to be a major talking point for the president and Democrats, it’s a wash and they’re one and done!

Those opposed to real perform don't have the vaguest idea of how to do it or what to enact. Their basic idea is to build a fence, round them up and shoot them if they try to return. Yet they are not willing to pay for it and claim govenment is too big. Only yesterday, there were 3000 Latino gang members rounded up and it too 2000 law enforcement officers working in tandem to do it. Those opposed to reform also see things in a very black and white manner, citizens vs. non-citizens. There are alternatives.

The problem is, no one has come up with an alternative that is fair to everyone and consistent with our Constitution.

We require equality under the law. So those that break it cannot get a better deal than those that do not. Legal immigrants waiting in line have to come first.

Our Constitution bans discrimination based on race and national origin. Therefore we cannot give Latino Americans a greater right to family reunification with their law breaking relatives than Americans of all other races and ethnic groups have with their law abiding ones.

We are a nation of laws. Illegals have broken many laws ( document fraud, id theft, tax evasion). Americans and legal immigrants spend many years in jail for those crimes, as well as commiting the crime of illegal entry. We do not let people get away with breaking the law without penalties that match the crime.

You make some valid points and other than developing a new Constitution which I am in favor of, we need some out of the box thinking. For example, I have a second home in Costa Rica and will retire there. By going through some legal actions, I can become a Pensionado with all rights except voting and this will also put me on the National Health Care System. There are four or five other residency classifications as well. We need to find some that work for us. And when I say a new Constitution, they may not work for all regions or be liked. We also have to be willing to what we demand in terms of walls, deportation, etc., and we strongly need to keep better track of those non-citizens of all types within our nation even if it means we keep track of our citizens which may not be that bad an idea.

Listen I'm tired of Hispanic's complaining about the position many of them choose to place themselves in. If the Dream Act is passed fine, but I will tell you I have issue with this notion we should just overlook people who choose to come here illegally. The law is the law. And I believe that it creates a double standard in this country. If a person who can't find a job and who goes out and robs a bank to feed their family and get's caught. Should that person be allowed to go free because they were simply trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads? No we would say that the person broke the law. So because someone is coming from a bad situation in another country we should look the other way when they chose to break the law. Sorry I do not agree with that.
