Cow Nipple Dress Rachel Freire

A pair of dresses made out of cow nipples is set to appear at Paris Fashion Week. But unlike Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress, you would not recognize the material at first glance.

London-based British fashion designer Rachel Freire used 3,000 nipples from a U.K. tannery. While cows make up a majority of the nipples, there's even some from yaks, she told The Huffington Post.

Last week, the controversial designs sparked outrage at London Fashion Week when animal rights activists slammed the garments.

U.K.-based animal rights group Viva was the first organization to express outrage over Freire's work. Viva's Justin Kerswell told the Daily Mail "Isn’t the way we treat farmed animals bad enough without turning their dead bodies into a runway freakshow?"

But Freire refutes Viva's claims, telling The Huffington Post that the nipples are "from European cows slaughtered for meat in veterinarian-approved and checked slaughter houses." She also points to the excessive amount of leather that goes unused and explains she's creating art with recycled waste.

"If people don't have a problem with leather, they shouldn't have a problem with these designs," Freire added.

Many people do have a problem with leather though, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which writes:

In the U.S., many of the millions of cows and other animals who are killed for their skin endure the horrors of factory farming—extreme crowding and deprivation as well as castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorning—all without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, animals routinely have their throats cut and are skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious.

Buying leather directly contributes to factory farms and slaughterhouses because skin is the most economically important byproduct of the meat industry. Leather is also no friend of the environment, as it shares responsibility for all the environmental destruction caused by the meat industry as well as the pollution caused by the toxins used in tanning.

Though the garments appeared on display at Somerset House during London Fashion Week, they never made it to the catwalk because they are too heavy to wear, said Freire. At Paris Fashion Week they will also be on display.

Though Freire has no plans to sell any of the unusual clothes, she does plan to make more one-off nippled garment pieces.

"I love all 3,000 of my nipples, and would happily donate my own body to be used as art by a responsible individual," she told The Huffington Post.

I think this is fine. We live in such a wasteful society as it is. Why not use as much of the animal as we can? I'd have no issues wearing it :)

In a misogynistic and patriarchal culture such as ours, I'm surprised they didn't make it out of human female nipples....

WTF?! How is that fashion? Her point about leather going to waste does not mean you should make clothing out of every part of the cow's body. Somethings are just better left alone. I wear leather and am not a vegetarian (yet, something I have been thinking about recently), but I DO NOT want to wear a cows nipple.

When it comes down to "anything to be outrageous" not much can be said for the merit of an artist. Subtlety is the key, not profanity. A recent issue of Town & Country magazine boasts several ads showing the latest using furs of rare and endangered species like badger. It's ironic that a magazine that does nothing but exploit the ultra sophisticate ends up being more debased than any other publication on the racks. The stupidity and ignorance of the beautiful people, their designers, and the very elite is astounding. With faux fur today so extraordinarily beautifu, there is no need for the life of one animal to be sacrificed in the name of fashion. Humane societies world-wide have their homework cut out, especially sincefaux fur is far more practical than the skins of a poor creature slaughtered for another dumb one to wear.

I guess that's a big "Up Yours" to PETA.

No surpise with everything else going on in England. She ought to use Cameron's foreskin, then she'd really be accomplishing something avant-garde. Then again all she'd get out of it would be a key chain. We'll see who ends up with it "Up Yours." This has only just hit the news.

This is unacceptable aesthetics and ethics.
India is celebrating Navrati from September 28 to October 5. Women, wives, even seniors are fasting to assuage Durga in preparation for Dussehra. So it is very ironic that in London, 300 cow nipples/teats on a dress are worn as fashionable high couture. It is derogatory to Hinduism, which respects the Mother Cow or Nandi, the bull of Shiva.
This is disrespect to religion similar to the cartoons made in a Scandinavian country on Mohammed. It is good that Hinduism does not declare a Fatwa.

Is a hot dog eating contest derogatory to Judaism if they use pork hot dogs? Maybe if they held it in a synagogue.
The fashion show wasn't in India, it was in London.

Beautiful designs.......but creepy......Eating meat is a moral issue for some and environmental for others...I am not fully vegetarian but understand the logic.....it takes more resources to grow and use animals for sustenance then the vegetables/plant life it requires to maintain them.. oil to ship them electricity to process them toxic waist produced.....I love a good burger myself but i see the insanity of this way of life and how it is destroying the planet....i eat meat maybe once a week now and do not miss it and am much more healthy....

I was a vegetarian for about a week, I couldn't take it any longer. I got tired to quickly and was always hungry. I did it on a dare from a vegetarian friend of mine, never again. I don't think the human body was made to function without animal proteins, but if that's what makes you happy, more power to you.

You read this and realize that there is no hope for the human race. We are beyond redemption and should be ashamed of ourselves but collectivily we lack the intellect to understand our shortcomings and hubris.
