Alexander McQueen's 'Savage Beauty' In Talks To Go To London

PHOTOS: Beyond Fashion: Great Moments In Art Couture

In the royal court of couture Alexander McQueen wears the crown. His recent show, 'Savage Beauty' at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, drew 662,000 visitors with his juxtaposition of fragile materials and raw, forceful energy. Now London wants a chance to worship the throne, and Martin Roth, the new director of the Victoria & Albert Museum, wants to bring 'Savage Beauty' to him. He told the press he is "determined to press ahead".

The New York Times described McQueen's New York exhibition collection as "ethereal and gross, graceful and utterly manipulative, and poised on a line where fashion turns into something else." Perhaps of any designer, McQueen was, if not the first, at least the most obvious, to extend his creations past the bounds of fashion and into the realm of art. Whether becoming an animal, a machine, or an organic garden, wearers of McQueen couture are not just in for a wardrobe change but a complete transformation.

In honor of McQueen's transcendent visions, we have created a slideshow of other fashion choices which have left the realm of style and entered the realm of art.
