Bank Of America Fee: Fox Business Network's Gerri Willis Cuts Up Card (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/30/11 06:46 PM ET Updated: 09/30/11 06:46 PM ET

Like most other Bank of America customers, Fox Business anchor Gerri Willis was stewing on Thursday.

The bank plans to charge customers a $5 monthly fee for using their debit cards starting early next year. The bank said that the fee was the result of new legislation that will change the economics of offering a debit card.

Willis was not having any of it on Thursday. She said nothing had her "more fired up," and hearkened back to the days when companies offered freebies like toasters and air miles that she said showed they actually wanted customers' business.

"Look, I have my limits," she declared. "I'm gonna show Bank of America just what I think of their fees." So how did she retaliate?

She brandished her scissors and cut up her card in protest, contentedly chucking the pieces on the floor.

It seems that the Bank of America had eaten me alive and now I have to pay fees and now they are trying to call and make me pay more money...I am mad now I have no other bank account...it hurts me to be on this. I was a good standing chef but now bad credit because of Wells Fargo and Bank of America...Wells Fargo continues to hang up on my video phone calls due to my hearing loss.

Of course she doesn't need the card. She gets most of her money from her husband anyway.

If it weren't for BOA's banking alliance with Deutsche Bank, which allows me to convert dollars to euros and vice versa without fees, I'd change banks right now.
Charging me a monthly fee to use my own money? And $5 is an awfully large fee, at that. Maybe they could've gotten away with $5 a year, or even $1 a month. Can you imagine how many millions they'll rake in from that every month? It's greed, and they'll lose business because of it.

even FOX news has to be right once in a while. Has to start somewhere - change banks - try any credit union - no more greed only institutions.

Poor strategy. What she should have done was call BOA before the show, threatening to cut up her bank card on TV. They would have given her a special deal with no fees, free checking, free check printing, and free customized checks.

"I have no choice!" $70 a year! To use my own money? I have to move banks. Well, we already did. Check out moveyourmoney.org They'll find a bank close to you. And they have the volunteer services of an independent bank ratings firm called Institutional Risk Analytics (IRA) where "you can get a listing of the most sound community banks near you. IRA lists only banks that, according to its rating system, which is based on government data, get a grade of “B” or better."

Do your banking at a LOCAL bank, credit union or savings and loan.

These big multinational banks have no ties to the local community or even the country.

Support a local institution that supports your community.

Just take care for that goodby kiss: a special fee to close the account. Some of these parasites have these fees....

Maybe she, and her channel, should stop catering to the undeserving rich business interests instead of making useless gestures once their crazy deregulation has caused problems that even THEY don't like.

It's too bad she didn't spend any time talking about Credit Unions. Maybe Citibank isn't charging a debit card fee but I bet they will find a way to make it up somewhere. Your local credit union will not ... join today...now...do it. Yes it takes some time to switch your accounts - it can be done in a lunch hour ... you will save more than that time. And Credit Unions participate in Shared Branching so it's just as convenient as your big bank when you can use any participating (and most do) Credit Union to do your financial transactions.
