'The Catechism Cataclysm' Trailer: A Priest Takes A Road Trip (VIDEO)

Often times, movies about religion are nothing to laugh at. From Oscar-winner "Doubt" to "The Passion of the Christ," to even "The Ten Commandments," those stories, with the spectre of God's judgement looming in the plot, required a sober seriousness that leaves no room for jokes.

But there are other, lighter times when organized religion, if not the supreme power itself, are lampooned. Count Mel Brooks' "The History of the World: Part II," Kevin Smith's "Dogma," Trey Parker's "Orgazmo" and even his and "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone's "Book of Mormon," if you want to lump stage plays in there.

The new indie film "The Catechism Cataclysm," definitely belongs in the latter grouping.

From writer/director Todd Rohal comes the story of a goofy priest that embarks on a wild trip to find himself, his God and lots of trouble -- which, from the trailer, seems like it comes mostly while in a canoe. Comedy! Here's the official synopsis; check out the trailer above. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and hits theaters in limited release on October 19th.

The Catechism Cataclysm tells the tale of Father Billy, an eccentric priest who tracks down his high school idol Robbie, an ex Heavy Metal rocker who begrudgingly agrees to a canoe trip. As they embark on their journey, it slowly becomes clear that the two old friends might not be as close as Father Billy remembers.
