Obama Pitches Jobs Bill In Weekly Address, GOP Wants Fewer Government Regulations

First Posted: 10/01/11 07:12 AM ET Updated: 12/01/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House and congressional Republicans just can't agree on the best prescription for the economy, with President Barack Obama demanding passage of his $447 billion jobs bill and the GOP pushing to cut government red tape.

Both efforts, the focus of competing radio and Internet addresses Saturday, face little chance of success as all-or-nothing proposals in a divided Congress.

Three weeks after Obama submitted his legislation, the Democratic-controlled Senate has yet to consider it.

"It is time for Congress to get its act together and pass this jobs bill so I can sign it into law," he said in his Saturday address.

The president has mounted a steady public campaign on behalf of his bill, trying to cast Congress and Republicans in particular as obstacles. With a populist flair, Obama has barnstormed across the country to prod Congress, so far to no avail.

The stops have come in contested election states such as Ohio, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia, and the president has taken his message directly to the districts of leading Republicans.

On Tuesday, he will go to the Texas district represented by GOP Rep. Jeb Hensarling, co-chairman of a special deficit reduction committee in Congress.

In the Republican address, Rep. Morgan Griffith of Virginia made a pitch for legislation in the House that would reduce regulatory requirements on businesses. He cited rules affecting cement plants and restrictions on institutional boilers as examples of government overreaching.

"For years, excessive regulations have been a source of frustration for businesses trying to stay afloat," he said.

"President Obama, who has said he's willing to consider stopping excessive regulations, should call on the Democrat-led Senate to follow the House in passing these jobs bills," he said.

Obama's public approval ratings have held steady in the low 40 percent range, but the public's assessment of his handling of the economy has been significantly lower. Obama has tried to deflect responsibility to congressional Republicans, who together with congressional Democrats fare much worse than the president.

Obama's proposal would cut payroll taxes for workers and for businesses, lengthen jobless benefits, spend on public works projects and pay local and state governments to keep teachers, police and firefighters on the job. He has proposed paying for the legislation with targeted tax increases. They include limits on deductions taken by wealthier taxpayers, closing corporate loopholes and ending oil and gas subsidies.

Republicans have said some of his proposals, such as the payroll tax cuts, are worth considering. But they object to spending proposals and flatly reject raising taxes to pay for them. Even some Senate Democrats have balked at the taxes Obama would raise.

There are 51 Democrats in the Senate and two independents who typically vote with them and 47 Republicans. But it usually takes 60 votes to overcome procedural roadblocks and pass legislation.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate and an Obama ally, told a radio interviewer this past week that there were not 60 votes in the Senate now for Obama's bill. "We can work on it," Durbin said. "We should."

In his address, Obama said that "some Republicans in Congress have said that they agree with certain parts of this jobs bill. If so, it's time for them to tell me what those proposals are."

Obama said that if people who listened to or watched his remarks feel the same way, "don't be shy about letting your congressman know. It is time for the politics to end."

Do your research, it is called the Library of Congress. You can use Thomas Register to look them up. HR's 1,2,4,5,12 & 25 would all assist in job creation, to cite a few.

Americans are so ignorant it gets painful to watch these follies. There are no companies that are failing to expand or to bid on jobs because of excessive regulations. Attempts by the teavangelical/GOP to convince gullible Americans otherwise are blatant lies intended to appeal to the ignorant and fearful. Similarly, Obama's jobs plan will not make much of a noticeable difference in the overall economy, but effectiveness aside, the infrastructural work being proposed desperately needs to get done.
Our current circumstances should not be a surprise. Keynes predicted it in 1930 in his essay, Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren, in which Keynes correctly predicted that the ongoing industrial revolution coupled with other technological advancements would make working to meet needs mostly obsolete. That is exactly where we are, but the outcome is far from Keynes expectations. That important difference is that Keynes assumed the benefits of our progress would be somewhat fairly distributed, rather than being stolen by a small, would be aristocracy. The shortage of jobs is the result of our success, not of our failure. The problems of our society and our economy are artificial and are supported by the large number of conservative Americans that believe god intended for life to be a trial.

Obama is not in any position to demand anything! This jobs bill will not increase any jobs but government funded jobs. When this funding ends so will those jobs. That was the same thing that happened with the stimulus program. A reduction in SS tax rates for 1 year will not generate permanent jobs in the private sector. It is just math! Version 2 of the jobs bill adds a 5% tax to millionaires permanently and that tax will generate $500b in Federal taxes over 10 years, I think, to pay for a 1 year spending plan. So Washington will borrow more and use this extra tax money for some other purpose. Bait and switch! Where is the 10 year plan to fix ANYTHING! Tax policy, spending policy, regulatory policy, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

Americans are looking for a plan to fix the mess ALL POLITICIANS have created. Demand real answers and real plans. If a politician can't fire them and elect someone who does.

America and American companies changed from companies that actually made something and valued the people who could make something to companies that simply made money deals for financial guys at the top. Workers were treated as expendable resources.

The movie "Wallstreet" show cases the greed of the Reagan era. Greed became a "virtue". The motto of the Republican Party.

Thats queer. I recall Obama going around on his little tour, spouting for deregulation! What happened to that? Obama change his mind on giving American companies equal footing on competition with foreign companies?!

Republicans don't want jobs for millions of Americans because they only want one job and that is Obama's. They want less regulation the same deregulation that got us into this mess. It is the same strategy as invading a country for weapons of mass destruction that was not a threat with any weapon to America.

Republicans are good at calling people names, but we already know that game.

The Republican decision for military action had nothing to do with 9/11, the war on terrorism, the UN weapons inspections, weapons of mass destruction, Iraqi human rights, or any of the factors that Republicans said were the true motives for invading a poor country.

The only people who will benefit from the war on Iraq are wealthy oil men who finance Republican campaigns. Oil company profits have increased continuously since the war as American tax payers pay for it. Republicans call people names to divert attention.

Fewer Business regulations....Hummmm! Oh I remember why I hate that Idea. Thats what lead to this recession in the first place. No oversight / regulation on Default Credit Swaps. Yeah lets go ahead and let that happen again, once wasn't enough. We have to have it done to us twice before we believe they are greedy enough to do it again.
09:56 PM on 10/06/2011
The greedy people that you talk about, are the democrats that controlled congress and pushed thru the deregulations in the first place.

President Obama is the only person qualified to lead right now. Your party couldn't even catch Osama. The best they could do is cause a 10 year war that no one could afford. Nothing but a international clown show. Thanks for helping us laugh!

The party of no is lead by a Pres. that says I will listen and then turns a deaf ear to any suggestions and it's my way or the highway. I don't call that a compromise , I call that a Pres. who doesnot work at all, does not work for the people or the country, just takes vacations and campaigns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not again, you are on a roll, I'm Canadian and know that Bush took way more vacation than Obama ever has! But once again, thanks for the laugh!

The Bill hasn't been presented and debated by both parties as of yet. There are Democrats against the bill and there are a few Republicans that are in favor of the bill. So right now there is bipartisan disagreement over the bill which is why it hasn't gone before the Senate or the House. Republicans want to vote on the measure now because they know that the Democrats have not enough votes to get it passed even though before passage of the bill it should be looked into 1st. The main reason why Republicans and a few Democrats are holding up the bill is because they, the Democrats, included limits on deductions taken by wealthier taxpayers, closing corporate loopholes and ending oil and gas subsidies and the few Republicans that want to go with the bill aren't enough to pass it.

What the dems. are afraid of are the fees in the jobs bill, that are actually taxes on the middle class. If the people find out about , some dems. coming up for re-election will be in the unemployment line. Couldn't happen to a dirtier bunch of con-artists.

The real Americans are tired of the deals and sequels that are normal politics. We are tired of passing bills with "a little" good legislation and "lots" of poor legislation just to get some of the good. It is time to fix the Government and kick out the cooks, or crooks, however you want to label them. That includes dems, republicans, or independents.
06:19 AM on 10/04/2011
wrong. not only the dems are voting for this so called jobs bill. 500 billion in tax increases. Of course no ones going to vote for it and he knows it He's just playing politics

The greed driven Republicans have had wholesale bribery and corruption declared "free speech", and now they have bought all the power. They have deluded enough undereducated gullibles to vote them into office. The uber wealthy corporations controlling the Republicans absolutely have no interest in any jobs program aimed at helping the middle class.

The uber rich cannot remain uber rich if there is not a middle class to support them, that is why your statement is ridiculous. The uber rich corporations need people to buy their stuff and the poor cannot do that. The greed you speak of is a lot further left of the republican party.
