Mariah Slick, Student With Down Syndrome, Crowned Homecoming Queen In Texas (VIDEO)

Mariah Slick Down Syndrome Homecoming Queen

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/ 2/2011 1:33 pm Updated: 12/ 2/2011 5:12 am

Mariah Slick is the first Azle High School homecoming queen with Down syndrome.

The high school senior, according to KVUE, never expected that her classmates would crown her the queen of their homecoming.

She is known for her warm personality, but even her parents were surprised by the nomination. "I never dreamed she would be nominated homecoming queen, especially since she has special needs," her mother, Susan Slick, told CBS DFW.

The 18-year-old high school student is one of the school's biggest fans, and according to ABC, hardly misses a game. It seems everyone has something nice to say about her as well.

“She is well-liked by everybody,” her friend Jordan Arnold told CBS. “She is sweet -- a real sweetheart!”

Slick bested three other contestants to win the title during halftime of the school's homecoming game Friday night. The look on her face is priceless, and you can see it for yourself in the video below.

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

Slowly but surely this world will become a better place because of moments like this. I've always thought to myself that this world would be a lot better place to be if we all had down syndrome. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that but think about it. The simplest things in life are so rewarding to them. Look at that expression on her face. There's a lot to learn from people with special needs, that's for sure. Lesson learned here...just take the time to make someone's day a little better which can be easily done with just a friendly smile to a stranger or a simple hello. Way to go Azle High school and Mariah, you looked beautiful. To her dad, your expression was PRICELESS!!!

"More stories like this please. What a lovely young lady. Well deserved no doubt."

Sorry for bogarting your comment Brian but I figure if more of us ask for good news we might just get it.

SHE'S BEAUTIFUL!
Pretty too.

When I was a kid my mum used to get so angry when adults used the word "teenager" like it was an indictment for murder. Now, with all the gagetry, $200 shoes, "me, me me" and "I want, I want, I want" that we hear from young people, it's sometimes hard to feel the same way; this makes it a lot easier.

Whew....just when I was starting to sound like my Dad, thinking the the generations behind me were too busy texting, sexting and disconnected from real emotions....

Thanks Azle Texas - You restored some of my faith in a generation and in humanity! You are all winners!

good for her, she looks beautiful.

If she received it because she earned it that's great, if she received it because her class felt sorry for her or to be politically correct, then that's wrong!

How exactly does one "deserve" to be Homecoming Queen? Is there some criteria you can detail?

It's a feel-good popularity contest--and different things make people "feel good".

This piece surely did it for me.

Maybe they did it to feel good about themselves ! Would you say thats wrong too ? They all win and at the of the day maybe it will get a few of us to reflect on what really matters ! Nobody loses when you demonstrate compassion and love for another ! There doesn't always have to be some underlying cynical reason for just being Nice !

This story gives me hope, and shows that younger people in this country are showing more and more acceptance. When I was going to school, someone like Mariah would probably have been bullied, since there were some extremely hateful people in my class, who bullied me constantly because I was a 'geek'. But this story shows that kids today are hopefully starting to move beyond that, for once.

That story was even more heartwarming than Amanda Knox's murder conviction in Italy having been overturned, although I'd consider that pretty good news as well, IF IN FACT she was being played as a SCAPEGOAT for the legal system over in that country.
Let's hope that Mariah has the very best of years to come going forward.
